I'm 65 and lost my husband a year ago. I've always wanted to travel - he wasn't into it at all. I've reached the place where I feel like I'm emotionally ready to strike out on my own. I had the opportunity to book a very small guided tour of Scotland in 2020. I hope it's the impetus to travel more - even if it's to the beach or the Grand Canyon!! Thanks for sharing your story!

I've been preaching this about literally any activity that society considers to be a social event: clubbing, movies, theater, fancy dinner, concerts(!!!!), travel, you name it. To you, dear reader: nothing shall stop you from enjoying anything. Take yourself to the movies, go to the concert of the artist you've loved for years. If I had waited for someone to accompany me, out of the 12 concerts I saw last year, I'd seen 2. Carpe diem.

I soo much agree! I didn't have a boyfriend for the last three years and why should I miss out on something (like a movie none of my friends want to see), just because there will be a handful of people who "pity" you for it/ look at you in a weird way. I don't get why society still stigmatises you for that...

Preach. I totally go for concerts alone because it is difficult to find people who share the same music taste as you and who are available. I felt bad-ass the first time I did it (X

You are SO right. For me, it started with the movies. I was off work during the week and wanted to see this movie (that I can't even remember). I decided to go alone because everyone else was working and I could get that sweet matinee price. It was amazing. I realized I don't "need" anyone for activities - I "like" having people for those things. Plus, I noticed I actually like myself. So I began "taking myself on dates." I haven't made big solo travel plans like Allison, but I have been doing solo things for a while. Conquer that fear of being alone!

I usually try skyscanner.com for flights, Airbnb/booking.com/hostelworld for places to stay. I usually make a list of must see/do things of the city i'm going to travel and If I have free time I usually explore/ask locals what they recommend

Just do research, use skyscanner for flights. I never knew anything about se asia 2 months ago, decided to do some research on what there is in se asia it seemed like a cheap, fun and interesting place to learn about the culture of se asia, as well as learn about my self. Did more research on flights, etc, etc, etc. Sold my motorcycle 3 weeks ago and now have a flight booked June 7th to Vietnam without a ticket home. I'm planning on solo traveling for 2 months with a budget of $6,000, which should be plenty! If it's something you want to do all it takes is some hard work and the will to do it.

I started solo travelling because I want to have these life experiences. That's it. Do I wish I had friends who could go with me and make me feel safer while doing it? Sure. But when I do it alone it's just as fun. There are definetly parts that make you anxious and scary but you grow so much. It's a 100% worth it.

@@nandiniputtarudraiah3618 Sometimes, but you have to be honest and admit that even day to day life is lonely in general. Loneliness is not a reason to stop yourself from experiencing travel. EVERY TIME I travel somewhere people ask me why I'm going alone and what you said is the exact answer I give them: nobody can come with me but I really want to travel so I'm doing it by myself. Also I found it's a way to discover myself because literally nobody is bithering me so I have time to spend with myself and my thoughts and to clear things out. The best thing imo though is that I'm able to do whatever I want whenever I want: if I want to wake up at 5am to go sit during 3 hours on a bench watching a city wake up, I can, and if I want to do absolutely nothing, I can too. Really great video that explains everything pretty well!

I'm 71 and some "seniors (okay I hate this word)" are nervous too. if I waited for someone else to travel my way I'd wait all my life and not to do anything. You will definitely meet a lot of travellers, in hostels, taking pics at tourist sites. I started solo traveling and went to Europe for a month this past summer, best decision I ever made in my life. On top of it, I met a long lost cousin who hasn’t seen the family in 20 years and saved on hotel costs because she hosted me. Everyone in my family thinks when I tell them that I traveled for a month that I’m super rich but in reality I stayed at hostels and cooked my own meals. The first thing that I learned about solo traveling was that hotels don’t mean anything because you’re going to spend most of your day outside, not inside, so it’s pretty dumb to pay $100/night for a hotel just to leave your bags inside

I LOVE traveling solo! I started small--a night here, a few nights there--and now I feel comfortable going farther and for longer by myself. Something I didn't expect to feel is the sense of pride in being able to take a trip and deal with the inevitable changes of plans or unexpected issues and only having myself to rely on. It's well and good to depend on the people who support us, but it's also great to know that I can handle difficult situations. I hadn't planned on traveling solo, but I realized there were so many places I wanted to see and things I wanted to experience that my friends or family didn't really care about/didn't have the same need to see, and I didn't feel like having to worry about planning around someone else.

I ask myself, "Do local women in this location work outside of the home? Do they have careers? Do they commute on public transport alone? Run errands?" If the answer is yes, I know that I will not stick out too much walking around a city by myself. It tells me that it is normal for a woman to be out and about doing things alone. I also always stay in a safe area of town, and always have a plan for where I'm going to be after dark (usually at my hotel or close by). I also make sure my family has an itinerary with where I'm staying and what I'm doing each day of my trip!

I have this book which I got 4 years ago on an exchange to Alaska. I wanted to fill it with "Travel". And whilst I'm only 20 years old and have already been to 30 countries there's still so much I want to see. So now I got this book out and did the same: listed places I want to go. Thank you. It took 4 years but that's better than 10, 20 or 30 years.

Im 18, in our culture young people travel a lot starting in their late teens. I already travelled quite a bit alone in multiple countries and i've been enjoying it quite a bit. It sort of forced me to go out, socialize and make sure i find people to keep me company as i travel. But as much as i love it, there's always that saying that echoes in the back of my head "The most beautifull view in the world loses it's beauty when you're alone."

You’re absolutely right. I have a co-worker advising me to travel by myself while still young. She really regretted not traveling during her early years. She’s now retired and having health problems and prohibit her from traveling. I followed her advised and now I’ve been to many places domestic and int’l. No regret and truly enjoyed it. More power to you!!!

I've been to Sweden at 21yo for a 3 months-internship on my own. Last year I've been to Amsterdam alone, a train, an hostel and go (It's easy to go from France) ! One month later I went to Mongolia for a horse riding trip (I booked with a travel agency this time, but I flight alone to go there). This year I moving to Switzerland, leaving my boyfriend behind. I'm planning to visit Switzerland of course, Liechtenstein and I would like to do a solo road trip in North Italy (depending on the future context). And I'm not even 25 yo. I travel a lot, especially with my mother who loves to travel also, but I love to travel alone. The last couple years, I did at least 3/4 trips per year. I still have a lot of places to discover on my bucket list : New York city, west coast of the US, a safari in Africa, Japan, South Asia, South America... Going back to Sweden in winter and back to Iceland in Summer. Some places are worth several trips, I've been to Canada twice last year, in winter and in fall, amazing both times 😍

I don’t mind waiting until our shedules match to go somewhere... I had a bf once that wanted to solo travel and I didn’t get it... why would go alone when you have a partner so you can make those amazing memories together to look back on... but hey to each their own.. it did ruin our relationship but if you find someone like minded ... why not :-)

In some ways, I agree with this statement. But that's why when you go solo travelling, you can meet people along the way to share these experiences with. Thanks so much for making this video! It does seem to be immensely rewarding. Girl, thank you for this video. ❤ I feel the exact same way as you. Also in a relationship, also travel together, but it is definitely not enough for me. It kind of sucks realizing you will never ever see all the places you dream of in a lifetime if you're always waiting on someone to take you/accompany you, but it is sooo refreshing. The thought was weighing me down so much all the time and I've got 2 trips lined up now, the second of which is completely solo (to Krakow). And I am both terrified and absolutely thrilled! I hope we get to see as many places as we can!! 🥰

@@erinmarie27 Hi! I'm Irish. I can tell you that it's definitely not true about one wanting to go to Canada - the Canadian government issues 10,500 working holiday visas to Irish people every year and they are always snapped up immediately. I've known quite a few people who have gone, everyone has adored the country and were very sad to have to leave! Ottawa and Calgary are the two cities which appeal most to me but I'm not sure I could handle the weather, so I think I might try Vancouver - being Irish I am well used to the rain :)

I’ve been doing it for 3 years now, and it’s really soo much fun! You get to be a selfish as you want, decide what you want to do, where you want to go, what time you want to wake up, and what you want to eat. You don’t have to think about anybody else but yourself. Yea, it’s kinda scary at first because your suddenly all alone and in a foreign country with your own thoughts. But after a while, scary turns into exciting, and before you know it you’ll be planning your next solo trip once you get back from the last one! Just like bungee jumping, it’s more scary looking down then actually jumping off 😊

The same happened to me. I was waiting the last 15years for a girl to go with me on trips. Girls came and went away... And I was dreaming of these places. In 2019 I said to myself, if I don't go alone, it seems I will not go at all. The last girl cheated on me. The one before also. I was done with women and relationships. I booked trips to Egypt, Red sea (Nov 2019, was diving with a turtle, made a lot of underwater photos, I go free diving, apnea). In Jan 2020 I have a trip to Thailand, wanna make a picture with a shark or a manta ray. In April 2020 I booked Maldives (wanna do a picture with a whale shark). In may 2020 again Red Sea, Egypt (wanna do pictures driving a quad in Sahara). July 2020 Croatia, Adriatic sea. October 2020 bought a trip to Seychelles. The only (small) regret I have is that I spent so much time on chasing girls and relationships instead of investing more time and resources in traveling experiences.

Late to this post but its like this video was speaking directly to me. My friend group is all married off and has kids and I don't have kids and won't ever be having any, but this has limited my travel options. I like traveling in shoulder season when its not as crowded and its cheaper. I'm tired of "oh well we have to wait until summer when the kids are out of school" So I was thinking of taking my first solo trip next April to Amsterdam and Berlin. I'm nervous because I'm not an extrovert, but this video convinced me. What spoke to me was that part about if I don't go alone I may never go. I'm 43, have the money and time to do it, and need to just not be held back by any fear. Great video.

Don't count out The idea of traveling a lot with your kids. I only have one son and he's two but we've already been to almost 10 states in the United States and we are looking at getting his first international trip in before his 4th birthday. Portland, Oregon or Portland, Maine? I've been to Oregon (so nice!) but have never been to Maine and always wanted to go! For international trips, I don't think there's a place I've disliked. Last year I did solo travel to Iceland, Japan and Portugal, and would recommend all three. I've traveled with people to Italy, France, the UK - those are all great places to visit as well. If you've never been to London, I keep seeing unusually low airfare on Norweigan Air - $300 round trip direct from Seattle - not sure where you're flying out of but could be a cool trip if you've never been!

You spoke my mind! Been traveling solo for 9 months now, and I'm loving it! And I definitely don't want to wait until I'm in my 80s and look at the travel lists, regret that I have not done when I was young.

This is one of goals for 2019! Looking into group travel in Vietnam. I have suffered from low self esteem, a lack of confidence and anxiety for most of my life. This is a way to step out of my comfort zone. I’m petrified but excited!!

I was never really worried about having someone to be along my side going to the places I wanna go more so.. the other ultimate question is how do you afford to go to all these places and maintain your job and your bills lol..

Girl! My exact thoughts! I'm currently in the process of selling my home to be able to travel full-time for the next few years. A big motivation being exactly what you said - I want to get out and see the world before life gets in the way. Happy travels! :)

i’m 22, and i decided to book a trip by myself.. was still very nervous prior to watching this vid but you brought up such a good point: people have different priorities, if yours right now is traveling... then put your priority first. “WOULD YOU RATHER GO BY YOURSELF OR NOT GO AT ALL?!”
