About a month after getting my C30 and outfitting it with a brand new 35lb CQR my anchor rode fouled badly in a flat mud bottomed bay. It turned out that the bay had in the past, been used to store log booms prior to hauling them to the mill. As a result, there were thousands of logs laying in the mud on the bottom. The night was very light wind and I dutifully had out 6:1 scope in 20' of water. In the morning I pulled in about 20' of the 120' I had out and that was all. Looking at my anchor track I could see that my boat had gently wandered all over the anchor zone. It became obvious that I had effectively tied the rode around many logs. Not willing to drop nearly a thousand dollars of gear over the side I spend all day lifting logs off the bottom. I took the rode to the cockpit and used both 40ST primary winches to haul in the rode as tight as I could get it with me on the first one and my wife on the second. That gave me a purchase of somewhere around 60:1 with the losses. This force would haul the boat down until it was heeling over 10º. We would both get on the low side and then jump across to the high side which would greatly increase the tension in the rode as the boat tried to lean the other way. If we got lucky, the loop of line would slip off the end of the log and we could haul in another 10'-15' to the next log loop. If not, we would tension it as tight as we could get it and jump again. We spent probably 10-hours working in the hot July sun to get the anchor back. The worst part of the whole ordeal was the stank of that mud coming up with the logs. As we pulled up the logs, putrid gas would come bubbling up to the surface and just hang around the boat. The line was also covered with the stinky mud, and it got all over the cockpit. Lesson learned. In a flat mud bay, expect a lot of logs that will catch loops of rode if you are drifting around. Now, If it is very calm, I hard power set my anchor with a 4:1 scope with 1800-rpms. I then shorted the scope down to 2.5:1 which greatly limits how much line is dragging the bottom for logs. I set a tight anchor alarm that will sound if i move out of a 3:1 circle. If the wind comes up, I let out more scope to get me out to something appropriate for the wind because then I will not be drifting around in circles lassoing logs.

Mate! Very well done, stoked that you retrieved your ground tackle!! It sounds like we've had a very similar experience when anchoring in used logging bays, it's pretty easy to get wrapped up on submerged debris. Thank you for sharing, we also anchor with a reduced scope in light winds for this reason now :) Cheers!

@@AllisonandJamesSailing Did and still do live on the coast. I recall one spot where a rock wall comes straight out of the water and up for several hundreds of feet and there is apparently no bottom at a 1000 feet. I recall swimming in Castle lake, at the end of Teakerne arm, in March.

Spectacular scenery in the Canadian fjord of Bute Inlet. I live in Seattle and have gone camping on Vancouver Island as well as the San Juans, Olympic Peninsula, etc. The Pacific NW has beautifully awesome topography with its majestic peaks, glaciers, forests, and wildlife. I just discovered your blog and watched two episodes aboard your airstream, which quite impressed me. The Peruvian rug in your kitchen area is exactly the same as my cushion. Ahh yes unfortunately the sound of the engine ruins every setting out here. But there's a constant 2knot current flowing out of these big inlets so if we were to cut the engine we would have been going backwards.
