Hi you two, I just found you...... how cool! I'm an old man wooden boat sailor with 72 years of cruising the Islands and Puget Sound. Very nice show, very nice. Good balance of everything and you don't have background music that is blasted back and forth. It's nice to see "boaters" like you and not just boat owners. Cruising off season as you do with no itinerary is similar to the 60's. Oh if you could have experienced the 60's, when boaters passed each other and there so few you would go out of your way to wave. I'm currently restoring a young but sadly neglected by situation not choice a Gaff rigged 21' Atkin Sharpshooter. It was built in Port Townsend in '94. First owner sailed it to Juneau and back to Anacortes singlehanded when he was in his 40's ? and the boat sat idle on it's trailer since '99. I purchased it last year for a cosmetic only restoration, if you're still around next maybe we'll cross paths. My son is up there Gulf Island Cruising frequently, I have referred him to your site. If you are around the Anacortes area I have a couple items that came with my boat I will never need, easy come easy go if you are in need: New condition LifeSling in the fiberglass box (never mounted) and a Danforth anchor new in the box good for a spare not to replace what you have. My wife and I have bought the farm literally moved an hour from Anacortes up the No Cascade Hwy. son too (we're burried in friends boats for winter). Anacortes lost it's adventuresome feel where we raised our children and always in the marine field, I'm a self professed wood boatwright. My wife Candi too, we were both raised in parallel lives on wood boats on the Columbia. My Son is a partner in a very busy boat building business in Bellingham now producing popular PacNW Sportfish boats. And I'm retired sittin' on the farm cruising vicariously through you and waiting for spring so I can break out the sandpaper so I can have a "Re-launching' in summer. Well keep it up, I haven't seen them all yet. Here's a KZbin question: when a video says 1 month ago is that from posting time and does it change with time? I'm having a bit of a challenge keeping them in order? I'm rambling, let me know on the LifeSling and maybe we could meet up somewhere. Cheers, Chris Lyman, WA Discover on KZbin "Sailing Kate Louise" Big dinghy criusing down in Australia. Big fun

Hi Chris! Nice to meet you, glad you've been enjoying the show! Awesome you're a wooden boat guy! Immense respect for the craft, dedication and hard work it takes to maintain one of those! Beautiful ships, we've always wanted to visit Port Townsend! Might be a while before we will get to sail there ourselves since we're heading North, but maybe a road trip is in order in the near future! Thank you for offering us those items, very generous :) What an amazing childhood growing up on wooden boats on the Columbia, far out!! Happy to hear farm life is suiting you just as well these days. We look forward to having our own 'farmy' homestead one day! Agreed, the 60's & 70's would have suited us very well! Although we're we've been cruising recently we hardly seen a soul so when we did we certainly did go out of our way to say hello! You may have found your answer already but when a video says "1 month ago' it should mean posting time so yes it would change with time. we've recently started adding the date our videos we're filmed in the video description if you're interested to know that! If you'd like to watch the videos in order with ease we've created playlists for each season - just need to head over to our channel page, click the tab on the top that says 'Playlists' and away you go. Hope that helps! Cheers and chat soon! A&J

Tip for the preventer - You should tie it much further outboard on the boom than you have at the moment. A boat in our club had tied it in the middle just like you and when the boat accidently gybed the boom broke in half at the point where you have tied it. Great videos... from Ireland and hoping to sail in the Pacific NW some day.

Hey Ken! Thanks for checking out our channel, we’d love to sail off the coast of Ireland one day! I’ve heard of booms/poles breaking in such a way before. We’ve been using 8-ply braided nylon for our preventer line, this allows for plenty of stretch in the preventer line and reduces shock loading in the boom. But we're looking to rig up a more permanent & robust system to reduce stress on single points. Thanks for the tip! Hope you make it out to the PNW one day, it’s one helluva beautiful cruising ground!

This past year I have added a preventer into my standard rigging on my C30 and it is really nice for downing work. I have a line that is the length of the boom with a snap shackle on the forward end that is stored by threading it through the main sheet bails and clips to a loop on the mast. To use it, I have a line that runs up to my foredeck cleat and then back to the snap shackle on the preventer. It is really nice to not worry about accidental jibes.
@AllisonandJamesSailing
@AllisonandJamesSailing 8 ай бұрын
That sounds like a great set up Hayden! It feels so much more secure running down wind with a preventer rigged. We’ve been using some spare sheets rigged from the boom centre through a block at the top of the starboard and port toe rail and then back to a cleat in the cockpit, we find having it setup tho way makes it really easy to control the mainsail while running down wind
@haydenwatson7987
@haydenwatson7987 8 ай бұрын
@@AllisonandJamesSailing Your setup sounds like what I used to do but I got to thinking about the forces on the blocks and anchor points if I got hit with an accidental jibe and even a little slop in the lines. The toe rail is designed to handle a lot of loads parallel to the track, but it is much weaker if the loading perpendicular (side or up). Attaching to one of the main sheet bails also puts a tremendous amount of stress a single point on the boom. The main sheet attaches to three points and pulled downward on the strong axis of the boom. By attaching a preventor to one of those bails, you are asking one point to do the work of three and the load is along the weak axis. By using a line to the topping lift bail on the end of the boom and leading it forward to a block on a bow cleat, all loads are greatly reduced and in alignment with the strength axis of each component. Now when I jibe, I leave the preventer on, and the sail just inverts but the boom does not move at all. I then ease the preventer and gently move the boom across until the traveler takes up the load and then trim it as needed.
@AllisonandJamesSailing
@AllisonandJamesSailing 8 ай бұрын
Thanks for that! You're right, definitely more robust and reduces stress on single points. We'll look to setup something more permanent/similar. Thanks again!

I think you may have been experiencing katabatic winds going up the Fjord. I didn't know about them until we got our asses kicked going around Brooks Peninsula last summer. On the south side, close to shore, which should have been protected from the prevailing NW and then some other inlets on the west coast. It is a phenomena where gravity pulls higher cool dense air down a mountain slope to less dense warmer air. We experienced over 35kt winds in what should have been, very protected areas and the closer to land and the slope, the stronger they were.
@AllisonandJamesSailing
@AllisonandJamesSailing 8 ай бұрын
Hi @Sailingbc ! We experienced the opposite of that which is known as 'Anabatic' winds. An inflow is when air from the water is flowing into the inlets, fjords and valleys. In summer in fair weather, the daytime solar heating of the land and the mountains combines to create sea-breezes and anabatic winds that flow from the cool water toward the warmer land as an inflow. Katabatic winds are scary stuff, sounds like you experienced a decent one! Definitely wise to be informed about these winds sailing around these parts..

You've probably been asked this already (and I'm too lazy to try to find it in the many comments...sorry) but why the different sail numbers on main and jib, please? Did you scrounge the jib from another boat? Still just loving your footage and looking forward to your next season, whenever and wherever that might be. Thanks.
@AllisonandJamesSailing
@AllisonandJamesSailing 4 ай бұрын
We’ve actually never been asked this before! All the sails were flying ‘came with’ the boat when we bought it. We think the main was purchased second hand by the previous owner because it’s in much better condition than the jib. The jib is likely much older (a few owners ago) - we found a receipt for it stamped 1996 in Washington. The boat also came with some hank on sails (from long ago) and a spinnaker we’ve never flown (we need a new whisker pole). So that’s they story of the sails! We need to upgrade badly, and are currently in discussion with a few sail lofts
@wastinson
@wastinson 4 ай бұрын
That makes sense; the jib does indeed look older than the main. Good luck with the refit. BTW, it's a spinnaker pole that you're after I think. A whisker pole, which is much shorter, is generally used for flying the jib, not for a spinnaker.@@AllisonandJamesSailing

Hi guys. Great videos. I seen 1 video where you make your own home brew. I do also and wondered about which brew to make and what yeast. What are you brewing? I guess for yeast I would bring some S05, 04 and kviek. All dried yeast, if legal in Canada not sure about hops. Once again not sure if it's legal. I'm into kegging, not bottling cause of the conditioning time. What's your favorite home brew?
@AllisonandJamesSailing
@AllisonandJamesSailing 2 ай бұрын
You’ve got a keen eye! Yes we also homebrew, mostly making all grain saison, pale ales and IPA’s. All the dried yeasts (and liquid yeast) are legal in Canada as well as hops. We’re thinking about getting into kegging as the bottling gets a bit laborious! Probably our favourite brew we’ve made would be a Trappist style ale with Brett, it aged very nicely in bottles for 18th!

@@AllisonandJamesSailing can I suggest keg land oxebar PET kegs. They are dirt cheap. You can get the tap head and keg condition with your priming sugar. The downfall of these kegs is cleaning but if you rinse them right away and get ur favorite cleaner in them it's not bad. My favorite at the moment, lol, is a simple citra, mosaic pale ale. I've been using Voss Kviek which tastes really good if you can get the fermentation temps up there. Will be brewing this again today using 1318. Cheers guys.
