A true story here, when Duane called Gregg in California, he said Little Brother get down here to Muscle Shoals Alabama NOW, I got a Band lined up, I want you to play a Hammond Organ, and Sing, Gregg said , Hell I only played a Hammond 2 times, Duane said Get Here Now, Another little fact, Jaimoe, was the first member of the ABB, Next to Duane, Duane told him i want 2 Drummers, He Said Why, Duane said Because James Brown has 2 Drummers, The Rest is History, Cousin Figel

Great story. And to add to it, Gregg was enrolled in college wanting to be a dental surgeon when Duane begged him to join the band. Gregg agreed to do it for 2 years. The rest is history.

Yes, it was a testament to Gregs musical genius that he got so good on the organ so fast.

I seen them at hot Atlanta 7-4-1970 in 105 degrees sweltering heat and then next they played at LOVE VALLEY NC, and after love valley I hitchhiked to Texas and these two. Pop festivals out of the 9 pop festivals I went to Hot Atlanta was the best fest ever , there was a time when Guinness printed hot Atlanta 7-4-1970 was the largest mass gathering? Ever to assemble.between 450,000 to 500,000 people ! It held until ABBA PLAYED CENTRAL PARK which claimed that 1 million showed up at Central Park , I lived in Charlotte , went to Atlanta pop # 1 at the speedway and too # 2 was in BRYON GEORGIA , about 90 miles from the speedway ! And Jimi came out at about 1:20 sunday morning right after POCO finished their set , and a few of the guys from POCO hooked up with the Eagles ! And when Jimi came out I was up against the little fence that kelp the crowd off the stage but I was about 14 feet from him his whole set , that was the second time I had seen him ,but the first time was in Charlotte July 1967 he was opening up for the Monkees and all those brats that came with mommy and pops started booing and they would not stop. They got louder and louder then started throwing paper cups popcorn, popcorn containers just anything they can get their hands on ! He slung his white guitar over a shoulder, walked back of the stage, went through the big, heavy velvet purple curtains , Then he found his way back through into the front of the stage guitar steel slung over his back, raised both hands and flipped everybody in the Colosseum off 2 BIRDS and promised that he would never ever play Charlotte North Carolina again as long as he lived ! , I think that’s why he put on such a great great show in Atlanta. It was to let Charlotte know what they missed that night and what they were gonna miss the rest of his touring days.Charlotte’s only 3 1/2 hours away,That’s his best live album ever believe that’s the reason why ! there was a tent set up on the left side of the stage where all the performers were in there smoking weed drinking doing whatever else was in there getting ready to come out when it was their turn, and I could see sitting in chairs right next to the opening of the tent Paul McCartney and John Lennon they came to the festival just to see Jimmy Hendrix. They heard all the hype about this black guitar God and came by helicopter as soon as he was done the helicopter shipped them out ! JIMI went with them ,Wanted to say that at Atlanta 70 and a few weeks later at Love valley was the last times I ever got to see all the Original Allman Brothers band play together ! I can’t even type it out without crying, I’m 72 now how I made it this long is amazing to me , my brain is cooked , but have lots of memories of my younger days ! Allman Brothers used to play in an old barn with a stage and dance floor right outside of Charlotte called , The phantasmagoria , seen them there many times they loved Music. They always played longer on stage than anybody else ever did , Johnny and Edgar winter with Rick Derringer used to show up there all the time as well , that place was a blast. It had an underground newsroom upstairs. you could buy books like the inquisition and the black Panther party news and 60 plus other titles and pipes papers all kinds of gadgets they even had a coffin with a glass top with a dummy in it ! THOSE WERE GOOD DAYS BACK THEN !

Duane is the reason I love guitar. He was the greatest without a doubt and he created a genre of music putting the band together that he did. HOWEVER, he only lived for 5 years after learning slide can you imagine if he had lived? Derek Trucks is a better slide player now than Duane was, the same can be said for Jack Pearson and Sonny Landreth as well. These three guys have spent a lifetime mastering slide and had Duanes works to learn from while doing it. The greats will always be remembered for their legacy as they should be. But they won't always be the best. The art continues to grow and evolve...

The Hell's Angels held the gates closed from the gate crashers until Alex Cooley said let them in! It was by far the best festival ever including Woodstock which was a mud pit. I was there at the Second Atlanta Pop Festival. The pic shown is not at Byron. It was the second pop festival in the Atlanta area. It was so open and free there were guys walking around selling bags of pot. We had the t shirt concession there, we sold the official pop festival t shirts. It was hot but a great festival. Grand Funk Railroad made their debut at Byron. Hendrix was there, I believe it was his last pop festival. Two hundred thousand fans were witness to history. As usual the Allman Brothers Band was great!

Acid was strong then. Blue double- dome was strongest, in my opinion. A quarter was plenty. Of course that was over a half century ago! 😀

Someone in chat box mentioned Berry and Allen Woody so I am mentioning Lamar Williams. ABB had the best Bassists.
@johnhy276 ай бұрын
Berry was/is the best bassist who never got his recognition. Duane would be off the fretboard and there was B.O. playing up and down the board with skydogg. He played lead bass

If you like ABB music I implore everyone to check out a band called Steeln' Peaches. They are an Allman Brothers tribute band out of Florida, but they do travel up and down the east coast. You can find full live shows from them here on youtube. I saw over 50 ABB shows, and these guys are the real deal.

@@bob733333 This is their closing set from the show. They opened with a longer set on Friday... This set started about 3:50 A.M. on July 6, 1970. As you could imagine, the Brothers were "primed". They had witnessed performances by Jimi Hendrix, Jethro Tull, Ten Years After, Grand Funk Railroad, B.B. King, Mountain, Captain Beefheart, and Johnny Winter. So guess what. They invited Johnny Winter to join them on the final song, a 28 minute recording of "Mountain Jam" which also features a bass solo from Berry Oakley and lasted until the sun shone brightly on a warm mid-summer day in Georgia.
