This was back in 1969 and 1970, when there was still a lot of overt racism in the south. One of their drummers was black and the band and their road crew went into a restaurant and their drummer was refused service. All 25 of the band and crew stood up and said"well, you are not serving us either" and promptly walked out. Businesses, slowly got the message that they are losing a lot of money by refusing service.

@@poloreacts27 I met him, Gregg Allman the singer, backstage at a show in the early 90's. I'd run into their road manager at a local gym and showed him some things he can do on his busy road schedule to keep in shape/get stronger. He gifted me 3rd row seats and backstage passes in return. I got to go to will call and do that cool "I'm with the band" thing. I also gave the guy a ride back to his hotel after the gym and when he asked if I wanted to come in and meet the band my my dumbass said "nah, I gotta go to work". Anyway, so when I ran into Gregg backstage after the show and said hi he was super chill but he was also talking to a smoking hot chick so I left it at that and let the man do his thang. Also, you're killing it with your reactions my man. Good luck with it.

Such a great song. The band went through a lot, most notably when Gregg's brother Duane, who was one of great guitarists on all time, died in a motorcycle accident fairly early on in the band's existence. But they persisted and made some of the best music of the 70's. Totally classic band.

This song is such a good cross-section of their style. Its got your blues, your sixties psychedelia, your bebop style jazzy time signatures. That is the difference between, and what separates them from from all of the other "Southern Rock" bands. The Allmans Had the mystical blues knowledge of the south and the New York smokey club sophistication of a jazz quartet. Of course you can only pull off that kind of diversity if you have the chops to back it up. I put them in a class of their own. A little closer to The Grateful Dead than The Marshall Tucker Band, in my honest, yet unpopular, opinion.

Soulful recording, gutt wrenching vocals by the GREAT Gregg Allman along with his brother Duane on guitar. I can FEEL every word he's singing! I have identified with being Whipped by life many time. It's more than a song, it's an Offering for anyone who has suffered this damn bad!! He wrote this at age 20!! "Good Lord I feel like I'm dying..." Blues, Heart and Soul- the Allman Bros involve us in the Music they are preforming. It grabs you, tears your heart out and lays your Soul on the floor, bleeding. 1st time I saw the Almond brothers in 1973 4.... The crowd screamed Whipping Post from the time they came on the stage. They did it for their last Encore. Left the stage and the whole coliseum was just pounding & hammering for a good 20 minutes after the song ended and they were long gone. The crowd stayed and just sounded and screamed. I was on the floor, 10 feet from the stage. It was crazy exciting, very cool, and a little scary. I have seen them dozens of times since then. Been to several with my now mid to late 30s kids...girls. Huge fans since they were teeangers. That 1st show is still, by far the best Allman Brothers show I have ever been to. Didn't hurt that Muddy Waters, all 60s & 70s rock n roll icon, opened for them.

I have to say that Gregg Allman didn't sound like any other singer I've ever heard (and I'm 61, just a kid when this came out). To be able to sing AND play the keys so expertly was a sight to behold. Dickey Betts & Duane Allman were phenomenal guitarists. Every member of this band was brilliant. I treasure their music more now than I did back in the day. Dive deep and dive often into their catalog.n Their live performances (especially at Filmore East) are among the best of the best.

This is music. They do not make it anymore. This is soul and talent, No one makes this kind of art anymore.

This style of music is relentless in the way it persues your attention and emotion. It never lets you breathe. I grew up on this vibe in the 70s.😎✌

In 2000 the Allman Brothers came to concert in my town, they were one of those bands that I always said if I ever had a chance to see live I would, the concert was about three hours long but it felt like it was over in the blink of an eye, I've been to a bunch of different shows over the years and without a doubt that was the best one out of all of them.

The Allman Bros were such an integral part of my childhood. Good music, sunshine on my shoulders; pain was when I fell from a tree. I love them with all that am. Before Duane and Berry O. died, when Greg kept them going. Betts, my beautiful Warren.. so good.

Happy to see this reaction. You’re Soul will be full with Southern Rock. Brothers, Greg and Duane Allman are the Founders of Southern Rock.

The classic Allman Brothers are often referred to as Southern Rock but considered themselves a blues band. Much of their early music was blues like this. The very term "Southern Rock" wasn't even coined until well after Duane Allman was killed during the recording of their fourth album, Eat A Peach. The title refers to how he died, hit by a peach hauler while riding his motorcycle. Edit: Oops! I just double checked. It was not a peach truck Duane hit. The truck involved may have been carrying watermelons, though.

Please continue with the Allman Brothers; I think the definitive Allman Brothers blues song is “STORMY MONDAY”, Live at the Fillmore East version. 🔥. It was also one of my Father’s favorite cuts; He was a connoisseur of fine music, and I couldn’t listen to it for a while after he passed (too young).
