Track 9: You Don't Love Me / Soul Serenade. This is the closing night of The Fillmore East, a very special show that has flirted with an official release for over 30 years.
"The tape begins with Graham introducing the Allman Brothers Band as one of the best he's heard according to his untrained ears, and the band embark on a show that packs a lot into an eighty minute set. The opening numbers show some restraint and not until "In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed" does the band get into an elongated jam session reaching over twelve minutes. The show ends with a twenty minute "Whipping Post" and a seventeen minute encore "You Don't Love Me"/ "Final Serenade" where Duane Allman quotes Handel's "Joy To The World". "

Dude, if you like this, you should check out the Geateful Dead 1973-77 then 1980-87. And another more modern group that was a great jam band is Widespread Panic. Their original lead guitarist/song writer Mike Houser died of pancreatic cancer in 2002 but they have a decent replacement. He's good but not as soulful imho. But their studio stuff & live stuff is really good. They are from Athens,Ga. I saw them play about 35-40 times. Saw the Dead about 70 times from 1987-95. The Dead toured Europe in 1972. Omg, I would have loved to do that tour BUT considering I was 5 years old don't think that would have worked.

Eat a Peach Live Mountain Jam to me is the pinnicle of perfection that night March 1971 all the spirits got together for a perfect interaction. The music just flowed like magic note for note and the ending was so dynamic, romantic and perfect. This music is immortal

Of all the Allman Brothers songs this IS MY ALL TIME FAVORITE!!!! And yes, I'm very familiar with the name Dickey Betts ! Him & Warren Hanes is/was the ABB that I know! Born in 1967 I didn't start seeing concerts until '79. My first show was ACDC @The Omni in Atlanta. I was in the 6th grade. A buddy of mine owed me $10 for some weed. And he says "How about a ticket to the concert & a ride there & back. We had 8 people in a Jeep. But me & my buddy Chris were in the back seat with 3 ladies we went to school with & we had a half gallon of Jack Daniel's plus I had weed too. I always had weed back then cuz I sold it for my parents. My Mom ruptured 3 disc's in her back at work & they wouldn't give her workers comp so I did it to help pay the bills.

This is Betts's baby, his finest guitar work is on the "You Don't Love Me" this jams. Amazing how he lets Duane take over on the climb up on Lizzie Reed while he stums rhythm guitar but Duane definitely returns the favor on this, my all time favorite Allman cover.

This is just a blazing version of YDLM! I've listened to this and other ABB renditions of hundreds of times and get blown away every time. Try focusing on Oakley's bass as you listen to this song and you realize that Duane may have been the heart of the original band, but Berry was the backbone.

You know he is Russ, and now even more so since Butch Trucks and Gregg have recently joined him,I fully believe we go to another level of consciousness when we die, and we are aware, enjoy relationships and most of our past loves, accomplishments, hobbies, etc. So you see, in my opinion I see a smokin rock band forming "in the sky, lord, in the sky" {will the circle be unbroken, 'THE CARTER FAMILY' RELEASED 1935}, the 1 FACT ABOUT DEATH is that we will all find out the truth !Heres to hoping we all go peacefully, take care Russ, jz

My God!" Howard Duane Allman" was so GREAT!!! How in the world was he able to get that finger dexterity? It's blistering fast, transcendantly fast,a whole other building kind of fast! Now,I really do love Richard Bettes, but H.Duane Allman owns RB in these jams.Who could compete though?Taking HDA into account.Kudos to R. Bettes for performing with ABB. Thank You, ABB! Your music really has enhanced my life, and Duane Allman has inspired me to play guitar, more anyone else, period! Always an ABB fan!

I idolize my dad but I never tell him I do. He introduced me to ABB when I was in grade school and I liked Jessica but I never understood it until now (I'm 32). Now it's my favorite band ever. Blue Sky is my favorite song of all time, and all I can hope is that my son will understand how Duane ripped guitar liked I'd never heard and never will,...

+Erik Braun I'm the same age as you, but my old man didn't introduce me to the Allmans. I pretty much discovered them myself, although I do recall that my mom loved when "Midnight Rider" came on the radio when I was a kid. Blue Sky is also my favorite Allmans song; it's a pretty simple song in terms of construction, but, damn, are those solos beautiful and soul-enriching. Cheers.

+Erik Braun I'm only 26 but grew up with my dad listening to everything from Jeff Beck to Zeppelin to Rush. But, i'll never forget one morning when I was a kid, probably 6 or 7 years old, and seeing a cartoon that showed a band with two drummers, I think it was the show Doug on Nickelodeon, and I remember asking my dad why they had two drummers. I can remember him telling me about some band named "The Allman Brothers". Here I am, still hooked, 20 years later.

Sonny Cannon My guess it was the High "E" 'cuz he was probably bending the hell out of it and making it scream. I'm in awe of you my Friend, as you got to see them all together. I was just too young back then, but did see The ABB 5 times w/o him & Dickey solo in 2000 at front of stage & met him at his Bus afterwards & chatted. The Live Fillmore album is just so great. Thank You so much for your excellent personal trivia, My Friend.

You got it right! Those gentlemen were a well oiled, finely tuned engine, takin' the checkered flag and bringin' home the big prize every time. (I love loud engines and old hot rods too, they make another kind of music) But the 1969-71 Allman Bros. were so insanely scary good they border on superhuman. I have often wondered if maybe those guys could read each other's minds. They STILL send chills down my spine after 43 years! I could go on for days.

Betts fan but I am also a historian of this music being as I've carried it with ma for a bit over 52 years and I'm 64 but Berry Oakley makes this music work along with the percussionist can't leave them out but that damn bass sings songs that so many miss as it strolls by you know it's like it has to be there . Now I hope I didn't offend you or anyone and peace to anyone who comes here for this great music !!!

I saw the band many times in '70 and '71 but the late show on Friday night in June of '71 at the Fillmore was by far the best I've ever seen the band perform. Members of the band have commented that this was 'the show,' the best they ever gave. I was there and I agree! Later versions of the ABB are unique unto themselves but for me, the original is still the standard by which all other live bands will be judged.

Fresh out of the Military some friends and myself drove to Love Valley N.C. for weekend Rock concert in July 1970. I saw the Allman Bros. Band for the 1st time. Dwayne, Berry were there... I was given 2 ABB backstage passes at a later concert in Williamsburg, Va. that I used many times to see Marshall Tucker band, Charlie Daniels, Wet Willie and Grinderswitch and many other Capricorn records bands. I know very well! I was fortunate enough to have been at the show you are referring to. That bill was Albert King the opening act followed by The J, Geils Band (they were smoking hot!), The Allman Brothers took the stage as you said around 2:00am and proceeded to blow the roof off the Fillmore! I vividly remember Duane saying at about 5am or so that "we played all our stuff now we're just gonna jam", Jam they did until around 7am!!! The greatest night of music in my life! Will never forget it!

I remember back around 1979 or '80, I called 96Rock, living in Atlanta, GA at the time, & I forget what song I wanted to request but they said if you request Allman Brothers instead we'll put you on the radio. So I said ok. So he started the recording and asked so what would like yo hear? And I replied "Well I'd really like to eat a peach!" And he replied "the Brothers huh?" And I said "Yes sir!" And so I recorded when he played it 5 mins later & so for a long time I had a recording of me on the radio saying "I'd really like to eat a peach!" And for those of you that don't understand the reference, I ain't gonna spell it out for ya, you just gotta read between the lines is all!

As GREAT as ALL the Southern Rock Bands music is with their studio recordings, they were EVEN BETTER with their live recordings as you can hear with the Allmans Fillmore album. Also, the last 4 cuts on Marshall Tuckers " Where We All Belong" album, Skynyrds "One More From The Road" album, Charlie Daniels Volunteer Jams, and Stevie Ray Vaughans live cuts in the 80s, are just a couple other examples. ----The 6 thumbs down above are ignorant TOOLS !! -----

This is an amazing performance but Dickey Betts called the show from the previous night the greatest performance the band ever did. Thanks for sharing this. It's always great to hear a different take. I especially like the ending -- around 13:27 gives me the chills. But I have to say that it's missing something on the WPII recording. *That one*, man, that's the sweetest live performance I've ever heard, of any genre. The transition there between the two songs is literally breath-taking, a spiritual experience for sure. If you don't know what I'm talking about check out Dreams Disc 3 track 1 6:30-9:30.

. I was at this show and yes, I agree, the greatest concert I've ever seen. WOW! I was living on 7th Street off 1st Ave, just around the block from the Fillmore East. Loved ever show. did you happen to see the Grateful Dead & Jefferson Airplane at 8th Street Theater in Brooklyn, I think it was the same year? Peace Hank

yeah the 43 mins session of Mountain Jam they did was cut to 33 mins because it filled up one whole album on the Eat a Peach set, but it's on Utube in 6 segments

Ya know what I love? I love the fact that only a day ago someone was gettin' off on this, just as I am today!! That's the sign of real music. Anyhowz, this is shit hot and I too love it. The blues trio I recently put together are gonna do a cover of this. I would only hope I pull just a couple of Duane's phrases out here and there....wish us luck ;-)

I've seen J. Geils over 30 times, and unless you've seen them live, its hard to describe their talent. Like the Allman Brothers, they rock the blues as good as anyone out there...

Dickie Betts outplayed Duane here, assuming Dickie is the 2nd solo - sounds like Albert King!

Brother, I envy you. I never got to see them until 12/31/71 in the Warehouse. It was daylight when we walked out of there, though.

Funny, I was at the 3-16-13 show as well. I was also at the 3-12-13 show too. Have the current lineup been better? Oh yeah, I'm sure. For proof of that, if you haven't seen it yet, check out the 3-1-13 performance of "1983" that segues to "Mountain Jam". It's smoking hot!

The poster writes that they flirted with releasing the show. It is on the Deluxe version of Eat a Peach. I got a copy back in 1971 from a friend who taped it off WNEW. I got a second copy from Tony Yoken who put together the Duane Anthology II album. Great show but sadly, the previous night was the show of all shows to be at.

A few years ago I had the chance to plan a conference that would host people from multiple states and DC. Since my Georgia firm was hosting and I got to choose the location, I chose Macon! One of the events I planned was a bus tour of Macon landmarks and Antebellum homes, and made dadgum sure we went by the house where the Brothers got started and lived when they lost Duane - as the tour guide told it he passed in that house. Morbid, yes, but still a trib' no matter what y'all say! SKYDOG!
