Time to transplant the Leek plants into their final growing positions outside on the allotment.
I like to plant them out when they're about 12-18" tall into holes about 6" deep.
The depth of the hole determines the length of the blanched stem you'll get when harvesting.
If you don't bury the stem then it'll grow green and be bitter.
So , basically using a dibber, make a hole 6" deep or deeper and simply drop a plant into the hole and water in ensuring you don't fill the hole up with soil.
I plant them out quite close as I'm not bothered about them being too big and I like to clear the land by Winter time.
If you want bigger leeks then increase the planting spacings to a foot apart in the row and anything up to 2 feet between the rows to give them maximum space and let them grow as big as possible.

You can always tell a Yorkshireman, but you can't tell him much! Good video, I've always grown leeks this way and it's pretty much foolproof. However, if you want a longer white stem try putting a 6 inch (again) plastic pipe "collar" over the plants to keep light from the stem.

My first sowing of leek went in a couple of weeks ago. Since watching you grow yours in a poly box and starting mine the same way I've had great leeks. As long as the allium leaf miner stays away! My dibber is uncalibrated so I think I went in to far!! Gunna plant another row or two before netting against the leaf miner. Cheers Dan. Great video. Chris.

Thanks to your dibber checking there is now red wine all over my screen. Its going to take ages to clean that off. What do use to measure 9 inches between them? Great tips and I am quite sure no-one wants a bitter shaft. On a serious note I actually learned a lot from this and will be planting my leeks out tomorrow so perfect timing as well.. Cheers Dan, an absolutely great video. All the best mate.

Top tip for polytunnel melons: June 2023, it’s been warm up to now so I thought I would try a new approach this season. I planted my Honeydew melon in a 30ltr tub in the PT, then I placed a plastic dry cleaners garment bag over the wigwam bamboo sticks, with a small bowl of water inside. When the sun shines on the plastic wigwam the water provides extra humidity. Compared with non wigwam honeydews the one in the wigwam is about five times their size 🤗 As soon as flowers appear I slowly pulled the wigwam up (over 24 hrs) to acclimatise the plant and to allow flies, bees and wasps access for pollination - or do it yourself with a cotton bud (Gently).

That tool you used was so handy! How did you make it, and also, why do you not want to fill in the hole once the leek is planted?
@Allotment-diaryUk
@Allotment-diaryUk 10 жыл бұрын
You don't fill the holes in at this stage or you get soil and grit between the leaves that'll stay inside until harvest. If you leave the hole then it'll fill in slowly from the bottom upwards as it rains and the leek grows to fill the hole without fear of getting the soil inside the plant. Cheers, Dan.

I love gardening, I really do but what annoys me, especially at this time of year, is that I suffer from sleep disturbance and usually cannot sleep at night and instead sleep during the day. As I write it's almost 3am and I haven't slept a wink, yesterday it was 4pm when I woke and it was soon too dark to do anything in the garden. I have so much to do as well. Please include me in your thoughts and prayers so I can overcome my sleep disturbance and get cracking in the garden again.

Good tip to avoid " Gritty Shaft" after dibbing the whole to 6 inch place a used toilet roll holder in the whole, to ground level. Then pop your leek in. By the time the cardboard rots away your leeks are well on their way... plus NO GRIT on your shaft....
