I learnt to not sow sunflower, Broad bean and runner n French bean seeds direct in the beds because the mice eat them. Best to sow in pots then when they are pot bound put in them in the beds and protect….its a right faff

Now the netting looks really wonderful plus the chips around everything is fabulous. You don’t let anything get by you! I hope you had a fun Birthday 🎂 with your hubby. Best thing I ever used for slugs is Beer. You just put some in little jars or plastic containers and bury the containers even with the top of the soil and fill them with beer. Slugs love beer and they climb in and die. Perfectly natural and it really works. Kinda gross emptying the dead slugs out….

You should leave the top of your the container an inch above the soil so that beneficial insects do not crawl in. The slugs will climb in.

Sarah leave the sweet pea flowers so that they produce pods of seeds. Leave them to dry on the vine and you will have a new crop of seeds for next year's planting. I suppose I'm telling you what you already know!

Yikes we don’t have red ants here but we do,have black ones in all manner of sizes 🐜🐜. Ants love wood chip too so I don’t use loads of regular chip but cedar seems to be less effected. I’m using gravel in the cage instead of wood chip 🤞🤞. All looking great Sarah and tucking things in for fall is fun, Ali 🌦️🇨🇦

Broken egg shells spread between plants keeps slugs away because of sharp edges. You can also spread coffee grounds between rows of crops slugs eat. You work so hard on this plot of land! Keeping up with the Jones's LOL seems to be the motto! Salt those ant hills!

Your protecting your cabbages from the Cabbage White butterfly Sarah. They lay their eggs and its the catapillars when hatched that will have a feast on the cabbage leaves. Do you have rabbits there Sarah? Your sweet peas have shot up. The allotment is looking really good. Awe and sharing it with your neighbours was so lovely. Just enough to grow some nice veg of their own...or flowers. They've done a great job already. Well done to them too. X😊

If you run short off arch poles, an inexpensive way to make arches for netting is to cut a dollar store hula hoop in half and secure it to the ground with a tent peg on each side.

Always enjoy watching your ingenuity in the garden. The netting looks good over the cabbages. One thing, I’d double check but removing the pea flowers is probably a bad idea because don’t the flowers then produce the peas once they die off? 🤔 Anyway have a good week until we see you again. 🙂
