Whereas the “proper magic” likely uses the staff as a means of conducting and focusing the magic. Hopefully they explain this in future works of his. It feels like Gutierrez is making something of an extended universe.

In Spanish is called something closer to street magic which is more like a barrio kind of think Also some of the spells are just a part of lyrics of different songs in Spanish the healing spell with frogs is something we usually like say or sing to children when they get injured to make them feel better will rubbing on the injury or in their back as consolation it translates some like "Heal heal frog's butt, if it doesn't heal today it will heal tomorrow"

Ah. I usually don't make life-revealing comments like this ;w; but I'll just say this right now. I don't think I've ever had a character touch me as much as Rico did. Like him, I suffer from confidence issues and I have a hard time seeing myself as actually being worth something to people, so I related to him a lot. But watching Rico begin to recognize his self-worth and inner confidence as a wizard reminded me that I could do the same. Even I slip and fall here and there, I'm still doing my best to nurture my inner potential, just as Rico did when first started controlling his powers. All and all, thanks for posting this vid :D
