Absolutely superb workmanship Sir. I would say a knife that anyone would and should be proud to own and use, I certainly would, but alas I fear I would not be able to afford such beautiful thing as this.

This is not a criticism or complaint, only an observation 🙂 Just to the twist and already I’m amazed by how many things left out that I see other smiths do during the forging process. No pre clean or pre soak. Not one time a wire brush to brush off scale. Yet everything looks great, tight, and it’s been very expedient compared to many other blade smiths. Looking forward to seeing this finished. Thank you for sharing 🙂

Wow! Excellent craftsmanship and skill with making this knife. The way you made the tip and edge by cutting them was really neat, I’ve just started basic black smithing and haven’t seen someone do the profile of the knife that way, is that a common way to do it or is it specific to Damascus knives? Like to help with the layers towards the edge, but again wonderful knife and excellent job with camera work.

I love the video, and the knife looks beautiful...but I have to ask, at 9:18-9:22, it looks like there are marks showibg metal got way too hot, which would ruin the heat treat. Is that not a concern here?

That is one of the more beautiful knives I've seen made in these types of videos. I also loved the music selection for the video itself. Not too dramatic and it fit the actual knife quite well. I'm going to watch it again just because :)

Mr. Kim obviously has a unique process that gives him great results, that was likely taught to him by another master smith, but I figure he has got to have significant hearing damage if he has never worn ear protection when using those power hammers. You may want to add a pinch more detail in the CC for those who may know nothing about this process. For instance, when you noted his adding a center metal plate in his San Mai (three layer sandwich), if I don't miss my guess it's likely high carbon steel used for it's hardness and wear resistance since it'll be the cutting edge, and the metals used for the Damascus cladding are more than likely stainless steel.

Spending 200 dollars on a Damascus steel knife from Japan is worth it, like a real one, no doubt at all. I had one and did not sharpen it for 8 months and this blade was still so sharp it shaved arm hair without any more pressure than sliding the blade across your arm, it’s insane

its actually no problem at all. the knives are just in the $1400-$2600 range. many of us US knifemakers make good damascus billets and blades too but you will be paying well over $1000. as someone who has made damascus billets and patterned damascus billets, I wouldnt sell a knife I made for less than $2000. everyone wants to buy a $100-$300 knife but no one would ever sell their time/effort so cheap.

Он несомненно мастер. Но именовать его лучшим я бы не рискнул. По крайней мере по данному видео этого не видно. Что такого особенного он сделал? Обернул углеродистую сталь подобием дамаска на 70-80 слоев и расковал в поварской нож. Думаю любой толковый кузнец - ножевик повторит этот "шедевр" не особо напрягаясь. Ладно бы он сидел месяц, поджав под зад ноги и старинными инструментами из кричного железа сделал нож такого уровня, тогда да - силен. А так просто хорошая работа не более.
