A dessert is really important in disaster/survival scenario if you can scrounge it up. The morale boost of some sweets is huge, as long as you're not pretending you're not starving.

I'm from Ukraine and I keep bunch of Snickers as part of my emergency pack, they're good to get that calories quickly. Especially when feeling cold outside or in a bomb-shelter, hot tea from thermos and chocolate bar is perfect. Also my buddy told story how they survived couple a days on a war, in abandoned farm being cut from supply, only having huge pack of candies lol.

Giving the body calories and a bit of sugar basically gives it carbs to stave off the cold and some energy. So it'd make sense you can be fuller from candies, but you won't get the nutrition for long term.

One good thing to add with this bucket is a water filter set that you can operate with a hand pump... that way you can have clean water to actually cook the food with, since some people may not have space to actually store water long term. So, being able to filter water from most sources would be convenient. Other things, which are a bit more obvious is keeping a portable propane stove, and several cans of propane around.

or they could add those water purifying tabs, I think P&G make the ones that bind all the particulates together so you can clean water a lot easier.

Hmmm, given that bottled water has a shelf life of 2 years I wonder if the water filter you mentioned would filter out the plastic. If it did then the water might have an indefinite shelf life!

Hurricane supplies! One of those and a stack of cans of chicken! You can make it for a week with no electricity, especially if when they started giving the hurricane watches, you popped a some seeds in the sprouter and some in a microgreen planter for some freshness. Cilantro, basil and parsley microgreens have the flavor but you can have sprouts in 3 - 4 days, microgreens in 10ish. Helps keep you happy while you're cutting up the zillion limbs that fell and waiting for the hurricane heros - the power company employees - to get to your area.

These are all freeze dried. The little packets are most likely silica which can absorb some moisture if it gets into the packages. Water will greatly diminish the shelf life of dried products so the packet is there to prevent that. One thing to remember is you'll need some drinkable water to make all these dishes and a heat source. So plan accordingly. These go great to compliment canned goods which do not necessarily need to be cooked as they're heat treated in the canning process.

Well, the trick is that you’ll be preparing these meals without electricity (the grid has collapsed) and no potable water (your well/municipal water source has been compromised.) So, of course, the preparation is a breeze. Yikes. Still, as a city dweller, like me, or rural folk, these emergency buckets of meals are a really good idea. I'm from Buffalo and I've considered how long we could last in the house without groceries. There's always at least a week's worth of good food in our basement, maybe 2 with just the stuff we buy in bulk to save on cost (not for survivalist reasons). For protein we keep Spam for things like Spam Musubi, but it of course is a survivalist food. Our freezer is stocked as well, and I guess in a snowstorm even if we lost power it wouldn't be that hard to keep frozen food frozen. Funnily enough during our last big storm that made headlines, the corner grocer on my block stayed open since the family who runs it live upstairs, so we only ever ran out of fresh produce (they obviously couldn't get any deliveries in).

This bucket is (was?) on sale at Costco for $65 and it’s a great value. However, it’s important to recognize these buckets are not fully self contained. There is no meat products and very little other protein in these meals. A better option, though a little more expensive, is the Mountain House kits on Amazon. Either one is better than not having any emergency food storage, but the Ready Wise kits from Costco are minimally sufficient. By the way, the powdered milk really isn’t intended to be consumed from a glass, unless that’s your thing. It’s a way of adding protein to other dishes and adding a creamy texture….or cereal. Edited for a typo.

Just get a container with a bug resistance lid. Put into the container one 25 pound bag of white rice AND one 20/25 pound bag of pinto beans. That provides not only carbohydrates, but the two paired together provide a balanced protein profile to the point where meat is not needed. Occasionally, Costco may sell the SOna Masoori rice that comes in 20 pound vacuum sealed packages. For storage, that is the best approach as it could last 100 years or more that way because without air, there will be no weevils or other pests. It also provides an immediate easy inspection because as long as you see the vacuum is maintained, the food is secure.

Add some freeze dried cooked meats and veg to the container. Use the dessicant packs to keep moisture out, and vacuum seal mylar bags. Then you can just add to any of the meals with a little more water. Almost no loss in quality, texture, or nutritional value. Also, with a freeze dryer, you can do your own meal prep for emergencies with favorite recipes ahead of time. And make some for friends, family, and neighbors.

During an emergency, you probably want to ration the food and not eat three meals a day and a lot of times those type of meals are packed with higher calorie, so you don't need three large meals or three meals. A lot of Americans are well fed so we could actually go a couple days without food. Some people like myself that are larger could go much longer without food, but that's why some people say you need tons of those and in reality you don't. You may want to only eat one meal a day to preserve your food
19 күн бұрын
During an emergency there are several scenarios that could be what you are doing on a short term and long term.. You might find yourself to be very active and burning thousands of calories a day in which case you might go a few days without eating much but in the long run you will have to eat a lot or get sick.. The flip side is you are hunkered down somewhere and doing nothing so boredom will induce you to eat which is very bad.. For these prepackaged kits I would suggest having a box of quart sized freezer storage bags handy if you don't have several people to feed so you can place the excess cooked food into to eat later.. We have fast meals and ones that need time to cook, our supply was cobbled together and we rotate through it so as to keep things fresh.. The means to cook the stuff will be needed, Vitamins, TP and a way to store large amounts of water to prep these dry meals is a must have..

The small packet is not preservatives. It is used to keep the humidity from affecting the food. The preservatives would be in in the food directly or in the cheese of the mac and cheese powder. But in a pinch, this would be good. Thanks for reviewing

EOTW!! Cracked me up. Thanks for a great and entertaining video. Truth be told in the EOTW situation you would have people licking the bowls clean and eating granola crumbs off of the ground. That bucket is a fairly good item to have. Then add a vacuum packed 25 year shelf life guaranteed legacy seeds for vegetables. Several of those.!

Ummmm, won't be able to cook all that if you get power outages. Have a backup heat source! MREs usually have their own that's built-in. Just add a little water to it. It self-heats. Military troops use them in the field. They include entrees, dessert, snacks & 1-2 beverages.

Yeah and MREs actually have calories in them. Three a day gives you 3500-4000 calories or so. The nutrition listing on the back of the bucket here indicates that a "serving" gives you 160-170 calories. The bucket wouldn't last a week for a soldier in the field.

If your garage isn't temp controlled, you might want to bring them inside to make sure they actually stay good. Fluctuating temps aren't good even for freeze dried food.

I believe in preparedness. Walmart stocked this brand of emergency food supplies for a while. They had 72 hour food supply boxes for, I think, almost $40 a piece. They only stocked the boxes for a few months. I guess they didn't sell well because put them on clearance. For $9 each. I bought...a few.

Here’s the big problem with these emergency rations: When the SHTF, where do you get that nice clean water to mix in, or the gas or electricity to cook it? Better store up a whole bunch of water somewhere and have a wood fired cook stove.

@gotafarmyet4691

the problem with most of these is the serving size. Few people will have what is needed to cook that large package. they next problem will be storing anything that is not eaten. Individual serving sizes that can be heated quickly is still the best option. That is the type of hiking packed food that also has that long shelf life like mountain house.

@@Verudur point is that readywise is misleading the consumer when they say serving. If you went to a restaurant and you bought a cheese burger only to find out it looks more like a one that is made for a toddler, you’d be upset. That’s what you’re getting with readywise. I’ve bought their stuff and made the switch to mountain house.
@Arthemax
@Arthemax 2 ай бұрын
@@VerudurI'd expect a serving to be enough for one of four meals a day. But 800 calories a day is not gonna be enough for any length of time. Especially an emergency situation where you don't have reliable heating or suboptimal shelter and need to rely on your own metabolism to keep you warm. Over time you want a minimum or 2000-2500 kcal/day, so that's 10-12 daily servings, equating to 12-15 person-days of food in one of these boxes. Far from feeding a family of 4 for a week.
