This confirms all the prejudices I have ever heard about point fighting.

+AZTigerMMA as someone who dabbles in this kind of competition... it's a game of tag. nothing really to do with fighting. it's fun, and it requires a lot of athleticism and timing, but it's really restrictive.

+confettiembolism666 I think my issue with this lies in the fact that they still call it self defense. I remember starting in martial arts that emphasized a lot of this type of fighting. I remember being really young and getting my ass kicked by a kid whose dad taught him how to box. after that I was on a mission to find the most potent style of martial arts. I think if you only have a few hours a week to train it's best to train in those martial arts that are going to give you the skill sets necessary to truly defend yourself. I do not think that this is the best way to do that period I think if I would have been prefaced with this as a "sport" as "a game of tag" it's more easily digested. the fact that most often this does not come with any warning labels as to this will not be effective in a self defense situation leaves a bad taste in my mouth as it could get people hurt.

+confettiembolism666 well said, I see your point of view.

definitely see your point. when people see this called "karate," they form certain conceptions about what karate is. the traditional okinawan stuff, though, is ugly and nasty. all the movements taught in the forms are grappling distance techniques - joint locks, limb destruction, chokes, even headbutts and eye rakes. i think this kind of competition is interesting on a certain level, but people should definitely know the difference between sport karate and traditional karate.

fortunately, my instructor and the association i train under (i'm a black belt in tang soo do, which is essentially korean karate) draw a big line between competition and real-world application, and in most cases, focus on real-world. the attitude is that you should learn the stuff that will help you in all walks of life, and competition is just there if you want to participate.
