If you've considered teardown videos showing us why the devices overheat you get my vote. I'd watch them. My use case for purchasing the cheap Anker is my mother in law is unable to manage multiple devices and does not care about efficiency or charge performance (with reason). For this it works perfectly. All she needs is the unit and one cable to handle her iphone in all situations.

Yeah, for a phone, these will do the trick, certainly not pushing any efficiency records. Any of these, mostly the 511 as a simple device, are made for that use.

Nice video as always. On a side note for the Anker 733, it is technically mentioned in one of the product photos on Amazon that it only charges at 65w when plugged in, but it’s worded poorly - “Charge at full speed via the wall charger” There’s also an image in the product description that shows how the power is split in both single and multi-port connections for both battery mode and power adapter mode.

First off, wonderful content. There is a class of user out there that is concerned with efficiency of charging vs. time. That is my primary concern. I am a hiker, I want to arrive at an outlet and spend the least amount of time grabbing energy. I don't care about time to complete charge, I care about time until charging taper begins. Maybe time to taper and percent of overall capacity could be presented. I do this in my own testing, so I know it can be a little tedious to gather the data, just a thought.

Yeah, this group of adapters/power banks were pretty bad. I have charts for the discharge (when they don't shutdown randomly halfway though, which these did constantly). But, my power analyzer for all its capability just logs overall watt hours and time not over a time step. So, you can't see when the charging state changes, it is just an accumulator. I do check it, to find out when charging stops though. So, I could at least make a note of the time when charging starts to slow down.

I actually thought this sort of device would be a good idea. Most power adapters have poor idle performance so adding a battery to have it effectively zero out while using very little power seems like a useful usecase. Didn't expect the implementation to be so packed with issues.

Hello. I recently purchased this product while being unaware of its flaws (that’s on me, should’ve researched more thoroughly, though it’s holding up well for my daily use case). I was just wondering if it would be okay to leave it plugged into an outlet 24/7 whenever I’m home, or if that would cause any problems with safety/longevity? Informative video btw
@AllThingsOnePlace
@AllThingsOnePlace Жыл бұрын
Yeah, the Anker drops into a low power mode once the battery is fully charged, it will keep charging it but hopefully it has some software limit on how often it does that, so it'll be cyclical as opposed to trickle charge which will destroy the battery really fast. I would hope that it is really designed for the first case since it is a power adapter also. The only issue I see is that the lithium ion may lose some life being held at 100% charge all the time, probably not as much as deep cycling the battery though.

I bought the baseus 45W 2in1 Charger almost 2 years ago and am Charging all my Notebooks (3 different lenovo ultrabooks) and other devices with this since then, even in battery mode, with no problem. Maybe the old charge is better than the new one. As far as i can tell, the charger works pretty well. I am surprised your test results are so bad
@AllThingsOnePlace
@AllThingsOnePlace Жыл бұрын
It did work in the tests, it is not very efficient though, the tests are pretty heavily weighted towards performance. In battery mode, it does not output continuously. If your devices are compatible with lower voltage inputs it would keep charging but the power level decreases through the charge. As a power adapter, for 45 watts it's also just poor efficiency.

So, perspective, all electronic devices carry some degree of risk. Batteries like lithium ion do carry more risk when at a full charge state. This device was tested to be safe and it has proper battery charging circuits so small risk but I still wouldn't use it as a regular power adapter.

Nobody is jumping to make an affordable UPS device. True UPS's are expensive. And unfortunately, they power adapters that are hybrid power banks, seem to be absolute garbage. None of them match their claims, they play on people's inability to know the truth, because at the end of the day, money is all that matters to them. This is why we needs folks like yourself, who blow the whistle on this garbage, and let people know. You'd think our government would make companies accountable for products like this, but nope, they don't. They lie, and will continue to lie, and it will never stop until class action lawsuits are started.

I do have a couple devices that are even worse than this. The solar, light bulb, power bank, everything in one devices. Should be fun. I also have a bunch of specifically low voltage UPS devices too. My challenge on that was getting 48V for PoE devices, I think I have that solved now. But yes, I think there are a lot of bad products in between the good ones, it would be nice if a company had a much smaller product line and focused on making the smaller product line great. It is like going into a restaurant with a 100 page menu.

If the battery is at 0% on the 733 when you plug it in as a power adapter, at what point does it begin charging its internal battery or begin doing pass through charging?
@AllThingsOnePlace
@AllThingsOnePlace 11 ай бұрын
I think the Anker does have 12V, that was a mistake. Habit, normally Anker doesn't have 12V mode. I don't have this charger anymore so I can't recheck it, but the notes on PQS say it has 12V. Generally, a laptop will use the battery and the charger to keep operating. The issue if not enough power is coming in the device will eventually shut down if under heavy enough load to keep pulling from both the battery and the power adapter. If the machine is idling it'll probably have no problem keeping the battery topped off and the laptop powered. The power bank starts charging immediately. The speed of charge isn't fast to begin with, but it will get slower if you max out the power adapter side. It is highly variable.

If my tablet support 15 watts how does PPS bring down watts from 65w to 15w?
@AllThingsOnePlace
@AllThingsOnePlace Жыл бұрын
If it uses the PPS mode, then it will ask for a lower voltage and current from the power adapter. The power adapter doesn't decide how much to supply, the device does. So, a 65W adapter won't force 65W in. The tablet may request 11V and 1.5Amps, and the power adapter in PPS can adjust to that setting.

I'd argue that not having a UPS function is more of a feature than a bug. If the power goes out while charging say, a laptop, one might not have much use for a fully charged laptop while the mains-powered Wi-Fi is out. OTOH one might want that extra energy to charge up a phone, flashlight or other item that's more useful in a power outage. By stopping the USB output, the devices leave that decision up to the person who presumably knows best.

There is just no power in the ground for them to send us the internet. So I resonate with what stringer says and suggested. I also wonder if it is somehow a safety feature to prevent the device from providing max wall wattage and Max power bank wattage? Idk how over power protection works though tbh.

I just bought the Anker 733 and I was dissapointed it maxes out at 40w on my laptop with 90w PD 20v 4.5A. Anker 733 shows Slow Charging and chargers my laptop @30w normal use, 40w under stress. I contacted Anker about it and they sen tme a replacement, but testing it shows the same performance. Charging 2 iphone 12/13 and one Galaxy maxes out at 35-40w. Never seen the battery go beyond 40w. Very disappointed and is thinking of RMAing the product

Yeah, as a battery it is way lower power, both charging and discharging.

@@AllThingsOnePlace I check it both plugged and unplugged. Plugged it only maxed out at 40w, Unplugged it gives my laptop 20w. I also tried it with various devices I have like a gopro, apple watch and another powerbank and it won't go beyond 40w, both of the Anker 733 are useless in my use case so I asked to get a refund for the 733 and bought the 737 instead. Maybe that'll be better for me :)

Any decent 2 in 1 power bank and adapter to recommend? or a good 10000-20000mah 30w+ non-bulky good power bank to recommend? Idk what should I be buying now

The Anker 733 is the best of this bunch. It is also the best one I have seen so far. I have a lot more to look at though so I really don't know yet. Power banks are a huge market and I've only scratched the surface.

Another good thing to review could be cheaper, about $50 battery backups all the way to the $100+ UPS Battery backups with sign wave protection. Many of them tend to stink and are not the best to program either.

Yeah, for AC UPS I tend to go with higher end products only. The low end stuff just isn't worth it. It is a good video topic though. It can be a whole series, there is so much to cover. Like Mr. Carlsons lab showing the transformer that was wound with aluminum wire and not even crimped. I am working on a video on the low voltage UPS's though. Basically, always on power banks, they all look pretty bad so far.

Hi , will that Anker 733 be enough to juice up a USB-C laptop , not a full charge , but enough energy to get by Also i've been seeing some "Type-C to Barrel Jack" adapters to support older laptops with their barrel jack ports , are those even legit ? if so , can someone point me a link to video where i can see their testing methods ?
@AllThingsOnePlace
@AllThingsOnePlace Жыл бұрын
I'm using the barrel adapter right now so yes they work. You may have to do a little research to make sure the voltages are compatible. I test some of them in round 3 of USB cables. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jHWYqpuLgbt9mtE

You summarize this whole video well @ 8:38 while weighing the devices. I never understood who/why someone would buy this where you couldn't use a battery, cable and brick and upgrade indepently of each other? These things seem terrible at all of their functions. Slow charging (input), slow charging (output) and inefficient and noisy. I don't find any of the baseus devices appealing. I give them kudos at keeping anker in a price battle for people who don't watch your videos. 🤣🤣

Yeah, sometimes, one extra cable is just too much. For me, they'll be separate devices.

Why combine a charger and a portable battery together? A portable battery is supposed to be light.

The Anker 733 clearly states the different charging stats while plugged in a wall outlet versus using battery storage; but your results valid. The chipset in the 733 dictates the power output based on many factors like if it is plugged in or not, the charge state of the device, and if tickle mode is needed. But I do wonder if you know if the 733 can charge its battery faster while plugged into a wall outlet and using a wall wart usb-c to usb-c into the input usb-c port on the 733 to charge its internal battery faster? Do you know if it supports this feature?

Pretty strange how Baseus makes some awesome normal chargers but this product absolutely sucks. Good to know not everything made by Baseus is the same quality.

"When you want to use it as a battery, and this isn't anywhere in the marketing material, this device isn't a 65W device, it is a 30W powerbank. That's sad, you got fooled and so did I." Did you even read the title of the item you bought? Or scroll down the page at all to know that it's only 30W unplugged? A whole lot of good a review is when you just say whatever you want without doing any research.
@AllThingsOnePlace

Thank you for the critique. I agree with you. I did include that bit knowing that it would cause some reaction. The fact is the banner specifications are up front and in your face, they say 65W, if you look on Anker's web site, the 'charging guide' is the only place you see this and it is confusingly presented and a long ways down the page. Then for specs it literally says 65W max right below that. One more line and I wouldn't have said anything. For example, 65W Plugged in, 30W on Battery. The data is there but it isn't written clearly. I could've worded the statement more nicely in the video for sure but striking a little emotional response, even if it is a negative one, is sometimes a goal. Sorry to disappoint on this one.

@@AllThingsOnePlace I was more referring to the Amazon listing, Anker doesn't seem to be all that great at giving information on their own. They've given 3 answers about whether the 733 can charge itself while acting as a wall charger "No it can't", "Yes it can", and "Yes, but only after the other device is fully charged". The last bit wasn't directed entirely at this video, moreso an accumulated frustration after a few hours of getting mostly wrong information regarding the Steam Deck/ROG Ally's batteries and how "The battery says 40w so it must be 10,810mAh, there's no way it could be anything else." It seems we'll never move past the point where people use volts, amps, and watts interchangeably.

Why those products even exist? Its not like the brands put effort in P&D, both baseus and Anker have great PB's and chargers

Yeah, should it be a surprise they stole information? I don't think so. Still not acceptable behavior. Anyway, it doesn't look like these ones are very good as power banks or power adapters so not much more reason to support them.
