Thank you for watching and HAPPY NEW YEAR! Thanks for all your support during the year, it's been a big year for us with coming to US, moving into the new boat and the big refit. Lots of work and a bit of stress but now we can look back at it and say "we did it!". You guys watching, commenting and being supportive of the project has cheered us along the whole way! Next year will have a lot more of actual SAILING, exploring and hopefully some skiing too. Can't wait!

With 50 years experience, it's rather hard to see what type of shaft apparatus you're using. A good rule of thumb though is that your shaft should drip through your stuffing box at least 5 drips per 10 to 15 seconds. This allows you to relax knowing your shaft is not heating up and no significant water is entering your vessel. Your hard work shows and I for one appreciate it. Fair Winds,Mark

I had the same Garcia boat from Philippe Harle. When sailing with the engine, it is very easy to block the centreboard by raising it 20 centimeters and tightening the two up and down lines. For information, there is no risk of raising the centerboard while sailing because downwind you have to sail with the rear centerboard completely down and the central centerboard completely up.Originally it was planned to inflate pads called "ride tire" to maintain the centerboard but with experience we do without! Il you need more ask me. I am on my second Garcia boat… Do not hesitate to contact me! Have a good trip

hey guys if you are interested in working out how to dip your tanks and get an accurate read against the wet brass - try a bit of steel workers chalk. essentially dry the dipping stick - mark a line of chalk along the length where you think it is likely to be - and presto the difference and height of fuel is immediately discernable

Problems offshore seem most often to come back to "things that move underwater." Rudders, prop shafts, centerboards, etc. With anything replacing traditional gear i ask 'at what price?' Dripless seals are virtually unserviceable in the water. For this reason i stubbornly stick to packing seals which can be virtually dripless using modern packing media in place of waxed flax. Shaft wear is not noticeably greater than a lip seal and they can be repacked and adjusted in the water.

I recommend that when you get just north of Port Hardy on Vancouver Island, that find out where Browning Wall is located on Browning Channel. It is one of the best cold water dive sights in the world, but you don't necessarily have to scuba. From sea kayaks it is easily possible to see the marine life clinging to the rock wall that goes on for a km or more. Best time is early morning with the sun shining to light the water. Also give a call to God's Pocket nearby. You may be able to enjoy a bed on shore with a hot shower. One of my favourite places for kayak camping is in that area. Also watch for the huge colony of Northern Sea Lions on the East side of Hope Island.

Here is a guess about your undersized center board furring strips: The center board was binding/difficult to operate and somebody increased the clearances for ease of operation but went too far. ??? As for those shaft seals, we had a leaky one once, and it was an easy fix and ended up working well, we just had to replace the sureseal tape. Doesn't take much contamination in there to cause a minor failure. If you guys bumped a sand bar on the way out the river that could have done it. Even just being in shallow silty river water something could have got in there. You can pre-load your shaft with fresh tape so you don't need to haul out to replace in the future to repair this. I forget exactly how, but we definitely did that it was the last time sure seal system bothered us in our year long trip. Personally I wouldn't trade it for a conventional stuffing box on an aluminium boat because it likely could be part of a careful corrosion/bonding configuration that would have unforeseen consequences if you started changing things.

901 comments says it all. You guys are a compelling watch because you do it all….the technical refurbish and the sailing…mostly to cold and difficult areas. The boat looks magnificent! Very special from the drone. Loved the seals and never saw seals jump like dolphins before! Amazed that you had a window on the drop fin/keel. That is a temporary problem , as is the leaking drive seal. Understandably annoying…but so typical of owning board! You will be elated when they are both repaired…even though your seal is brand new. Going out the Bay northbound on a construction site .... ambitious. You obviously did toss the right currency and value of coins to Poseidon's liking, given weather and barcrossing and all. Lumi's easy on the eyes - great droneshots. That centerboard rubber - depending on its exact chemical formulation - could have shrinked considerably in the neglected times of her on the hard - I reckon You did get that sorted by now. Looking keenly forward to the North West Passage videos. Thanks for sharing on KZbin! (Here from three digit subscriber numbers onwards by the way). You might consider replacing the rubber strips in the centreboard box will PTFE/ Teflon plates. They will not compress and have very low friction characteristics. They can also be machined to fit snuggly which should reduce the lateral movement. Good luck and good sailing.
@christophbraun5682
@christophbraun5682 2 жыл бұрын
PTFE / Teflon is not good for use close to or in the water because it takes up water an swells. In marine Applications you prefer to use POM as a low friction plastic. It takes up almost no water and has good low friction characteristics. It is used a lot for keel bearings or rudder bearings.

Like many others point out, the sailing in the arctic betrween snowy mountainsides and icebergs is content u wont see too often in the sailing space (mostly cuz the majority of people are just lingering somewhere warm,dont have the guts, and/or the knowhow )! also this kind of uniquness is KEY for differentiating your channel from the rest, for letting it stand out. Congratulations kids you have done an incredible amount of work on this boat, which looked like some wreck several months ago. I will follow your trip with pleasure.....

You probably did it by now ,but I would weld a keel around the centerboard . Let the board down to a draft that your comfortable with, and make it part of the hull.

You certainly have the right temperament for intelligently handling the serious problems that often plague adventurous sailors. I admire the calm demeanor you maintain when faced with added problems and expenses. I don’t know if it’s mostly cultural, learned or instinctive but it certainly is an explorers job requirement and a great asset. You are definitely a Captain! Happy, Safe, New Year!

Nice passage with beautiful video footage. Boat looks fantastic and the problems seem minor enough to me. I love Solvi's jumper!

That’s a pretty brave move leaving without a test sail but sometimes you just have to weigh it all up. The wooden stick doesn’t lie.

First of all Happy New Year ! You talked about losing some viewers because you will be doing "Arctic Sailing " now and not boat refit videos . Truthfully that is what attracted me to your channel in the first place . The fact that you were in the Arctic and seemed to be the only channel making videos about it was amazing to me . Just keep doing what you are doing and the views will come to you .

I'm definitely looking forward to watching you guys sailing arctic waters! There's lots of channels on YT about various people exploring the Caribbean sea, the gulf of Mexico, and the Mediterranean sea, so Arctic sailing is a bit of fresh air hehe Happy new year!
