You’ve literally put my headspace of 3+ months into this video! I do not enjoy hygiene- I don’t think I ever have to be honest, but it’s where I’ve found myself and I’m still looking for an outlet to do something I love while making money. The job really pays the bills, but having to come in to work every day and say almost the exact same thing to everyone I meet is DRAININNNNGG. It IS repetitive and gives little room for growth, not even considering the constant and consistent exposure to work-related injuries- no matter what we do. I’ve resolved to constant self-reflection and asking God to work through me while I’m still in this position, as well as praying for better opportunities. If this is the cross I’m carrying, I carry it to the best I’m able to. There could always be worse so I might as well embrace what I’m currently experiencing. But thank you again for highlighting this because it’s nice to know we’re not alone.

Hi! Fellow RDH. I totally understand where your coming from, but once you learn more about the “hidden” opportunities this field has, there are many! You can open your own dental hygiene practice and Tailor your treatment how you want, make the appropriate referrals that includes to medical specialists, travel to communities that don’t have access… offer new technology that not all offices utilize to better treat your patients. A lot of states are opening up practicing independently. There’s also research and teaching opportunities. It’s tough but there is definitely more growth. For me, I think what helped me get out of that repetitive conversation rut with patients was learning more about how oral pathogens impact our bodies, GI, Brain, cancers, everything. It helped inspire me to educate on those topics and not just plaque induced periodontal disease. That gets boring. Good luck with your new endeavors anyhow!

A lot of hygienist say the same about the career, It is very repetitive. That is why I think it is important to work as a dental assistant so you can see that this career is not easy or fun.

I literally was thinking the same thing I was an assistant for 7+ years and it was horrible because of the people and pay… I am going to DH next year because I actually enjoy the field

Hey Allyssa! I hope things start looking up for you. I randomly stumbled across your channel and can totally relate with you. I’m also a Dental Hygienist and graduated from FSU in 2020. I currently live in GR as well but work a little outside of the area! I’ve always struggled with not absolutely loving hygiene ever since I graduated, but I’m just trying to make the best of it for now! Just wanted to let you know that you’re not alone with feeling that way. Feel free to reach out if you ever need advice!

hoping things start to look up for you! it’s a very defeating feeling but there’s something out there for everyone, that’s what I keep telling myself!

I'm in week 2 of my new job and I keep telling myself it's not my fault I don't like it. I got my BS Biochem degree to be a chemist. The job market forced me to downgrade to a lab tech, which I did during college. Sucks, but I'm gaining more experience and hoping to be a chemist next year.

Hey Allyssa. First of all, I’m in love with your content and videos! I’m also a dental hygiene student but my semester hasn’t started yet. I wanted to ask you if you worked while you were in DH school? I was debating between if I wanted to start working part time but I wanted to know if it’s “manageable” with DH school. I would really appreciate it if you could answer me. Thank you and keep up with the great work!!❤

yes I did work at a coffee shop the whole time I was in school! I also know a lot of people who have worked while in the program. it’s very manageable!

I’d love to know more about your Data Entry job, because I’m doing pre reqs right now to get into the hygiene program, but for various reasons I don’t think it’s going to be a long term career for me and I don’t want to continue to pursue it if that’s the case because it’s 4 years. I really resonated with what you were saying about why u don’t enjoy it anymore and I think the same thing is going to happen to me so I’m already looking into different majors. I’m thinking business but I’m still exploring other paths. I’d love to know what u do in data entry, how many hours do u typically work, how much do u get paid, and what are some things you’ve had to learn? *sorry, that’s a lot of questions😅*
