Banned: How A Scholar’s Written Prayer Gave Life to Freedom
Our Lord says, "Call on Me, and I will answer you." (40:60)
In the backdrop of Muslim dynastic rule crumbling nearly a century before, political aspirations thwarted, and the eventual foreign occupation of our lands, a spiritual weapon of resistance was crafted by a renowned scholar that marks the turning point for his people’s freedom.
This could be Gaza, but this amazingly poignant supplication was crafted by the famous Imam Muhammad Ibn Nasir in the 17th century and inspired a spiritual, economic, and political movement that would successfully overcome the French occupation that ended in the 20th century. This scholar of exceptional talents and devotion put bare our simplistic requests that despite our many wrongs, through only Allah’s (Glorious and Exalted) abounding Mercy, justice can truly be established. Through patience and organizing action, even in the face of proclamations banning its recitation, this amazing du’a spread throughout the Muslim world and reminds us to seek our ultimate refuge and future with Allah Almighty in times of strength and weakness.
We offer this heartfelt recording of Du'a Nasiri by Ghuydar Bashmaf, Bilal Atiya, and Sami Zaharna for those taken in the unspeakable realities of the Occupation of Palestine and the ongoing suffering in Gaza. Through the strength of faith exhibited by our Palestinian brethren, Many of us are awakening to the realities of faith.
Listen to this amazing rendition while reading and pondering this supplication for the many thousands of lives lost: the mothers and fathers who have lost their children, and the countless children who have become orphaned; for the extreme need to stem off starvation, and for the souls who stand witness to the crimes committed against them we ask for Divine remittance and their ultimate salvation.
