Almost 40% of 2,000 polled feel they are likely to lose their jobs in next three months: NTUC

Two recent polls conducted by the labour movement showed that workers are fearing for their jobs. This has spurred further calls for a 'transition support package' for retrenched workers. In the first survey conducted between December and January, 40% of Singaporeans felt they were likely to lose their jobs in the next three months, compared to 25% in the same period last year. NTUC and the Singapore National Employers Federation expect more layoffs this year. They said displaced workers should be supported in landing new jobs.

The way around this is to dismantle the protectionist policies. The government has been too lenient towards locals and has limited many Foreign Talents from coming in and getting a job in Singapore. Certain industries like Taxi and PHV can only hire Singaporeans only. This is totally against the free market economy theory and that causes prices of goods to spike up lije crazy. A short ride from Sengkang to airport cost $30!!! Thanks to protectionist policies by the PAP. Companies now need to pay more for local labour and will have to pass the cost onto consumers causing cost of living to skyrocket. Enough already! Abolish the S Pass, W pass and EP and allow total free movement of labour and that will bring prices down. Focus on quality of labour for the locals with various skillfuture courses!!

Things are gonna be rough. Think about all the jobs that chatgpt has replaced and how much more productive people are now. Companies are gonna need to get more out of their current workers and not hire any new people. On a bigger scale, all the signs point to a recession starting in the third quarter of this year. The government has announced that they're gonna do a top up of skillsfuture credit skills training to help with the unemployment problem. Future skills they mentioned are all Pmet jobs. A huge part of our economy is our non-pmets. The macro trend will affect all segments of the economy, but the non-pmets would have it tougher.

it's interesting to note that those in power always talk about those not in power (i.e. lower rung workers or those unemployed) needing to reskill and upskill. But they don't talk about the structure built by those with entrenched power to preserve their self-interests that leads to loss of jobs. Until we acknowledge these systemic issues, the less powerful will continue to run in circles with no real long term benefits.

NTUC is like a religion, its approach is top-down, and has been adhering to its doctrines for way too long that it is unable to adapt to new knowledge. Half the economy of Singapore is sustained by low-income locals and foreigners. Even haircutting has become a low-income industry that provides jobs for foreigners. Singaporeans doing food delivery have to compete with foreigners to make that little amount of $2500 income per month. Singaporean non-graduates have always been marginalised by this elitist system that also supports the relentless influx of "foreign talents". It is very difficult for them to make progress and sustain their career achievements but too easy to fall back. Now, Singapore has arrived at the stage where 50% of graduates won't have the chance to taste success in their lives. Yeah, NTUC, is a religion! Ha ha ha!

Government should know who are those who are vulnerable and not support (or support less), those who are NOT vulnerable (those who are well qualified but was displaced). If support is given to Non-Vulnerable, it would backfire, be meaningless and self-defeating in the process, just my two-cent worth.

It is the qualified ones losing their jobs. I know many employers who replaced more qualified workers with less qualified workers. Qualification is like a joke these days.

@@V.I.P205 Qualifications are merely entry passes to a job interview. You are naive to think that they mean anything more than that these days.

@@sihanchen7552 People here like to call others that insist on right things to be done as "naive" to justify what shouldn't be the case.

@@V.I.P205 Excuse me, but what exactly have you "insisted" are the right things to be done? Like none whatsoever? My reply above was essentially agreeing with ur post that qualifications do not serve any tangible purpose except they are entry passports. The "You" are naive literally can mean anybody who thinks otherwise. But if you wanna think the "You" is directed at yourself and you wanna put urself in the naive bracket, well thats your choice then...

This is all because of Singaporeans attitude towards foreigners. More and more companies are leaving Singapore thanks to the high wages and poor attitude from Singaporean + Singapore governments tight policy on foreign labour. Open the gates already. We need more foreign workers to bring wages down so that more companies come to Singapore instead of leaving Singapore
