I really love the part of the Bruno song when we can see him lurking behind them, it was so ominous when I watched it. IDK if this answers your wonder, but Bruno added the ritual himself - one of the writers(?) on Twitter basically said that the ritual is most likely a coping mechanism/"crutch" he uses and relies on because many of the visions (especially since he was asked for so many growing up) were extremely emotionally taxing and intense for him, and the ritual fits in with how superstitious he is and gives him something to "focus" on :-) So he probably doesn't actually NEED it for his visions but really really prefers it for the comfort/coping/superstition purpose. As for how that exact ritual came about though I don't know!!! I'm curious too!! It looks like he uses bay leaves and I know those are believed to ward off evil (could include bad luck as well) but that's just an observation I made and might be wrong about.
