Love seeing new builds, the thinking behind them and hearing random attitudes on ships. The Onslaught was particularly interesting to me, surprised to see flak / devastator / HMG midline as opposed to direct damage and wouldn't have thought you needed the front left / right flak with the devastator right next to it.

Front middle medium ballistic really perform well with PD. It's really fun to watch reapers never touching you.

I don't really think of HMG as pd, although it does help for that, but it's more of a way to get through shields when you burn in close. I always use plenty of flak to support the devastators so I don't get hit by a torpedo during the cooldown between volleys. PD weapons are more flux efficient which helps mitigate the onslaught's low dissipation as well, but it still has more than enough firepower to get the job done.

Onslaught with array of machine guns will quickly overwhelm high tech ships since they are practically being bruted forced through the armor with kinetics with a splash of HE PD fire, while flak is most damaging with fully broken armor. The fun part is the AI thinking *it didn't need to raise shields against a ship that's all PD* Devastators can reliably break armor with enough time and can catch modestly speedy ships. Hellbores are great when capitals and stations are involved.

For me, I like to use Hounds for ECM Package and Nav Relay. It does quite well, especially when equipped with something like a HVD.

Hearing you insult the gryphon was actually hilarious, I run it as a support ship for my carriers with salamanders and a locust. Locust overwhelms PD and lets fighters/salamanders hit their mark. On the front I usually have aropos to land the killing blow.

Since we're rambling, i like the hound as more of an extra gun escort. Use it as a heavy mauler or HVD to compliment whatever it's escorting. The buffalo mk2 i like to pair with a colossus mk3. Strap salamanders all over it, as a hanger, give it whatever you can afford. Give the colossus 2 perdition bomber wings or your favorite fighter, i like to stick to low tech if I'm using low tech. Whatever the salamanders hit, the perdition bombers hopefully get a free salvo of torpedos. All for like 13 supplies a month or something. The onslaught is a commonly confused name i think. People assume an unending attack but really onslaught means a fierce attack which if you use it as such, can burn to where it's needed, unleash a barrage of heavy fire and then get behind an escort (or wall of dominators) and cool off before you need to do damage elsewhere on the line. I play more of a phalanx style of fleet command though so perhaps this doesn't work for most people.

I've started making frigates the backbone of a lot of my fleet compositions and I love the Luddic Path Lashers. Slam 3 Light Machine Guns and forward fixed Light Assault Guns onto them with two Single Hammers, Unstable Injectors and whatever else you want with a bounty of OP left. It's fun to watch them be a pack of piranhas.

**Apogee SO enjoyer VS Apogee HIL/tachy fan** SO Apogee with plasma cannon, 2 AM blasters, squalls and a swarmer SRM launcher with 24 vents is the ultimate build for it IMO. Literally the best cruiser in the game, and it's precisely why it's getting its DP cost raised in the new patch.

Bro this is amazing! You've earned yourself a new sub. I just got this game a few weeks ago and I love it, but I'm terrible at loadouts beyond basic flux management. Funny enough my Aurora is one of my best. I have a steady pilot in there, but I think the higher speed makes him more aggressive, because he always dives into the thick of it. But he always survives. I'm sure I just accidentally stumbled upon a decent build and nerfed everything else in ignorance. 🤣

Dual plasmas on tempest is underrated. Use termination sequence for the strong emp effect/ armor break once you are through their shields. Hardened shields and resistant flux conduits to win flux war, maneuver to vent. Sabot is good too if you have to go against thicker shields.

For my Legion, non 13, i start with the fighter/bombers. In the Nexus mod I befriend the Remnant and get Flash Bombers x4, the large ballistics I favor Hephaestus Assault Gun, Mark IX Autocannon and the Mjolnir Cannon. in the Medium slots I use Heavy Autocannons in the small slots I favor Dual Light Machineguns. Primary Mods are Efficiency Overhaul (on all Ships), Expanded Deck Crew, Recovery Shuttles, Ballistic Rangefinder, Expanded Magazines, and Integrated Targeting Unit. Three of most costly are build in. The Legion 13 swaps the large ballistics for Cyclone Reaper Launchers and drops the hullmod Ballistic Rangefinder for Reinforced Bulkheads (all fleet 13 ships will have this). Also you over specialize by using same weapon types for all weapons slot sizes. For excample: Large Slots Devastator Cannon, Medium slots Dual Flak Cannon and for small slots Dual Light Machineguns. Fighters if available will always be Remnant Flash Bombers.

With how vulnerable they are on the sides and flank I honestly don't think any other build can be considered legit, especially since their special ability pairs perfectly with long range beam weapons to kill ships.

10:27 The two medium Energy slots issue is what i have with the TT Brawlers, they just don't have the OP or Flux to handle two medium guns *or* the medium slots they can afford are wimpy lasers that aren't effective on their own like that. Tempest at least has termination sequence and better mobility on its side.

I don't know exactly why but I've always been neglecting hull mods. Max flux stats -> Add as many guns as I can fit -> Leftover points for most likely flux hull mods or expanded missile racks. My eyes have been unclosed. Why have I been bothering with flux caps on a condor or a legion for example? Why haven't I been using hardened shields for things? Who knows, great channel I'm learning a lot.

Hull mods can make some pretty busted stuff, build in some highend hull mods and you'll have op for days

Actually pretty easy. Starsector-core/data/variants and edit with Notepad++. just make sure to use the correct weapon IDs, which can be found in Starsector-core/data/weapons/weapons.csv .

My only success with the regular brawler has been safety overrides, arbalest/heavy mortar and 2 ions, basically just gets in other ships faces and refuses to die until help shows up

22:10 went by before I knew it. My only suggestion is that if you intend to instruct the viewer on how to arm the ship, you should probably hover over the selection for just a moment to allow the viewer to pause, primarily for newer players’ sakes. That aside, great video.

I'm kind of curious to see if the legion and the legio XIV will become a bit more viable to use once the update comes out. I personally am just not the biggest fan of it despite how I love how it looks. I just don't like battle carriers for whatever reason. It's why I'd much rather have a Heron as opposed to a Mora. At least the Legion can actually get to the front lines in a somewhat timely manner meanwhile the battle is usually halfway over by the time a mora waddles it's way up to the front line. I get that a lowtech carrier doesn't really make too much sense but whenever I have a legion or a xiv version of a legion on the battlefield I just think "Man I wish this thing was just a full on carrier." It's kind of ironic because the legion xiv is rare and isn't a part of the xiv battlegroup blueprint when it's by far the less impressive of the XIV capital ships. Don't get me wrong, having a capital ship is (usually) better than not having one. It's interesting to see how other people do low tech ships. I tend to do ITU + max caps + max flux then work off of there, with the heavy lifters being hyper velocity drivers + heavy mauler combo, and with PD either being single or dual flak cannons, with a mass usage of vulcan autocannons. I keep trying to get into a high tech run but I don't really like relying on missiles and I find energy weapons to be completely unsatisfying to use.

idk if this is still "meta" so to say at all, but this was really interesting to watch from a new players perspective, although i will admit i adore the Legion in my fleet, i only run 1 or 2 if i can find those special ones. but man that raw ability to just sit there and not give a fuck while my much more fragile dps ships eat everything is so amazing. It's so nice, but i will admit i really do like the heavy autocannons for my legion as at least from my limited experience they're pretty good at fluxing out enemy ships shields, plus they just look cool like a traditional heavy cruiser turret imo. Also admittedly i see so many videos praising the Apogee but man i can't make that ship work for the life of me, It's definitely a skill issue as i lost one time to a single hammerhead in mine, i suspect my build was just super crap but work in progress for sure, and i'm still not sure what to think of the Onslaught. It's nice and beefy with pretty solid outward firepower but if it gets singled out it seems to melt surprisingly fast for what it is. So definitely more learning on that one for me too.

I know people don't like this idea but I depend on large amounts of Shields and high anti sheild weapons and then secondary weapons to pick away at the ship, maneuvering to survive. ( black Rock drives player )

It is a little odd that this game has a pretty sophisticated ship AI - it does quite a few things, not always well, but its surprisingly complex - but it doesn't do basic ballistics and target leading. You know THE BASIC JOB FOR WHICH COMPUTERS WERE INVENTED...

It definitely has its weaknesses, but it's worth it. If you want to see what they're capable of, I have an older video on my channel (without any talking) called "Starsector is perfectly balanced game" where I bring around 9-10 apogees and crush ordos.

it's a shame that the AI thinks proxy charge launcher is a point defense weapon instead of using it to carpet bomb everything. 5 PCL legion is straight-up better than 5 annihilator legion imo, though similarly it forces you to use mk9s in the large ballistics since you don't have the OP budget to fit BRF. if you have the advanced gunnery control mod, you can add a NO_PD tag to force AI to use PCLs as direct fire weapons. also: i found it interesting that you didn't go for 2+ xyphos on legion. thunders are cracked, i agree, but the sheer utility xyphos provides in direct combat is so nice. interested to hear your opinion. good vid!

When it comes to xyphos, they' are a bit expensive to use just for pd, so I typically limit them to builds that take full advantage of the free ion beams. Problem is, they only have 1200 range and sit behind the carrier so you have to get fairly close to use them. If I was going to pick up xyphos then I would probably switch to storm needler + PCLs instead of rangefinder + hellbore + pilums. I think they're changing the PCL next patch to not be tagged as pd so it will actually work with AI.

A little odd not wanting some rear ordinance on the onslaught when its already at like, 220% flux capacity on its primary guns. Can't maintain forward fire for any amount of time anyways, so why not shuffle some OP to the back to provide situational coverage? The advantage being that you're usually not firing in both directions anyway so your really just letting the rest of the forward guns fire longer with little effect on real output - and it's not like the Onslaught is going to *turn* to chase frigates...

Your builds show a lot of practiice. Althou your Outslouth is not ideal. I made few tests to find out effectivity of side large slots. It is very low. On top, when AI can shoot by side large slots it is not very keen to turn around and use the main enery weapon. Therefore, my advice, leave side large slots empty. Saved OP can be used elswhere for greater impact
