It's as good a tutorial in bop piano as one will find. Doing a few of those 2/5/1/s or 2/5/1/6s in all keys pays dividends.

This is so good Jacob! I'm a long time classical reader trying to move to jazz and it's not easy. It's not the chops but you have to think and feel this in a new way for me at least. Thank You so much! This will help. Best.

This is great!! So you see the hands, hear the music and see the translation. Looks more complex than it sounds. Red is quite brilliant here. Amazing piano player.

Thanks, Timmy. This version was a surprise to me this month -- I fully recommend the whole album. I previously had Red down as 'that Blue Note house pianist guy', but he holds his own against Coltrane on They Can't Take That Away From Me.

@@jazzlover06 You must mean "Prestige house pianist guy". Red never recorded for Blue Note, to the best of my knowledge. Glad you've discovered Red, one of the true piano greats.

Thanks a lot! I'm hoping to release a new video next weekend. They take me quite a while to learn, record, edit, but I'm glad it's helpful to some people. I use Transcribe! for slowing down the audio and looping, DaVinci Resolve for the video editing, and Noteflight for the notation. I'll publish the charts on github next week along with links to the software sourcecode.

@pooslinger42253 жыл бұрын
Did you learn it by ear first, or learn from the notation?
@jazzlover063 жыл бұрын
I usually do learn from notation first, but this was an intentional effort to avoid writing anything down until I had the whole thing memorised. Generally I'd recommend being able to sing each phrase, then play each phrase, then only notate once your fingers know what they're doing!
@Gaglias1233 жыл бұрын
I am having a little trouble discerning whether the left hand comping is on the first and third beat or the first beat and upbeat of the second beat. Any thoughts?
@jazzwest13 жыл бұрын
Most of the time it’s on the and of4. And the and of two
@Gaglias1232 жыл бұрын
@@jazzwest1 Thanks, I believe you are correct. Every now and then he hits it on the downbeat of one to anchor it, but not all that much. I have to tell you trying to play this solo with timing that left-hand comping on those offbeats is no easy task.

he gave chords so if you’re a jazz pianist you must know how to play the chords and the pattern you hear!
@Explivious3 жыл бұрын
@@sydneylittle9399 playing the exact rhythm that they play in the left hand, and voicing, shows you the inner conversation the pianist is having, and lets you internalize his rhyhthm, guarantee you most of the spaces in the right hand are filled with some voicings.
