Nice work as always. I just watched Samuel Streetlife's review of the Thypoch 28mm vs this Nokton and from that review the Thypoch is the clear winner for me (1.4 vs 1.5 surprisingly made a decent difference, next to no CA (whereas the Nokton was quite bad), closer min focus, cheaper, image quality was equal (Nokton perhaps better microcontrast but not by much) and sharper; however, aesthetically, the Nokton is what my ego wants, it just looks less unorthodox from a design language and is smaller. But the Thypoch outperformed. I'm really looking forward to your review and head to head of these two 28's.

@@thomaschamberlin2485 I shoot a lot of still life guitar photos and the contrast between shiny nickel silver frets, strings, against the dark fingerboard woods always turns into a purple fringe fest with the wrong lens. It can be corrected in post, but I'd much prefer not to have to do that a thousand times over. I've also warmed up to the Thypoch build aesthetic each time I watch a review on them (35 & 28).

Hi Matt! Thanks for sharing so much of your experience. I have a love hate relationship with Voigtlander lenses, simply because they have an awesome look overall- but the performance of each model/variant can be drastically different. So it’s really confusing. I’ve wasted so much time trying the variations for Xmount, and it was quite the chore. In Sum, my eye is particularly sensitive to purple fringing, it really mucks up an image for me. Especially when so many other parts of the photo look so beautiful. That CA/purple (even green) fringing was glaringly apparent for me trying many of the newer Xmount Voigtlanders. Although, I will say the Ultron 28 F2 Xmount is amazing, and I cannot find fault with it. Now, here I am again looking into M mount voigtlanders for my Leica M4-2. I was hoping to get something I can use on the M4 but also nicely adapt to my Fuji XT5. Do you have any thoughts on which Voigtlanders might have this Purple fringing under control? Preferably in the wider apetures? 1.2-1.4 in the 28-40mm range?
@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom
@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom 6 ай бұрын
Yes 100% for 28mm Ultron performance. I know that as I tested it again recently. For all the other options you’ll need to binge watch each lens video I’m afraid as I don’t remember. (I usually shoot B&W too so rarely an issue).

Great review as always. I'm still trying to decide between the Voigtlander Nokton 28mm f/1.5 Vintage Aspherical Type II, and the 28mm f/2.0 Ultron Type II. The minor difference in price is not an issue, but I would like the best of the two for street photography. I find myself shooting in low light at times while traveling abroad so I'm leaning towards the Nokton. What's your take between the two if given a choice for an m11P? And thanks for all the great videos, they are always extremely helpful.

Question remain:how does it compare to the Summilux... According to Fred Miranda: " The Voigtlander 28mm f/1.5 Nokton competes well with the Leica 28/1.4 Summilux, matching its performance, color aberration control, and even outperforming it in the corners, despite its more compact design..." I'm not totally convinced from what I see.

Would you recommend this over the Color Skopar? I’m torn between the two. I don’t like the 0.5m focusing on the Nokton (I shoot only film M) but I’m not sure I’m convinced on the performance of the Color Skopar given its penchant to vignette. I’m also curious about distortion between the two!

Hey Matt, another great video! I`m currently using the 7artisan 28mm f1.4, but due to its relatively heavy weight and its close focus of only 0.7m, I thought about replacing it with either the Typoch or the Voigtlander. I`d be interested how these 3 lenses compare shot wide open and which one you would pick? I`m currently leaning towards the Typoch. Can`t wait to hear your thoughts on this!

Matt, thanks for the review, but the real acid test is how the CV 28/1.5 compares with the Leica 28/1.4 Summilux-M wide open, at f/2 and maybe f/2.8. I'd assume at f/4 and beyond the two lenses would be virtually identical. All other comparisons are rather moot, IMHO. So do you have any comps with the Leica 28 Lux?!
@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom
@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom 2 ай бұрын
Thanks! Yes agree to wide open test but I have no 28mm Lux sadly. To give you a benchmark, the 28 Lux beats the Q lens and the Q lens beats the Voigtlander and the Thypoch wide open. Stopped down any lens is good (get the Ultron if shooting from f2).

Thanks. I sold my Leica 28mm f2 and replaced with the better performing Ulton. So that ticks that box. (Leica is more filmic, Ultron more modern/ perfect). I'm not sure if I will get access to the Leica Lux anytime soon but if these new lenses can match/ beat the Ultron it's fair to say they beat the Cron 28 I sold too. (The Lux is too expensive for most to consider and big ..BUT is said to be better than the Leica Q lenses so likely still the best fast 28 you can get).

Hey there... thanks for this nice overview! I'm very much in the market for a wide-aperture 28 as a "wide-ish normal" for my Pixii. Currently I'm still using the 28/1.9 screw-mount Ultron that I bought in 2003 to use with my Epson R-D 1, but I feel it no longer measures up to other lenses I own. What I really want to know is how this new Nokton compares with the 28/1.4 Thypoc -- but I guess I'll need to wait another week or so for that! In addition to optical performance, I hope you'll do a comparison of handling. One of the other reviewers I follow said handling the Thypoc 28 was frustrating because the aperture stops are unevenly spaced and the focusing ring is so close to the camera body that it was hard for him to grasp. I know you didn't seem worried about these things in your Thypoc 35/1.4 review, so it will be interesting to have a balanced perspective. Looking forward to this (with some model pics, I hope!)

Any chance of film (colour?) samples? especially at f1.5. A lot of the M mount lenses in the last few years only get reviewed by digital Leica users, and the look of the lenses can be so different with film. So many reviewers take photos OF the lens on a film body but never shoot film! Cheers.

Hi fair point. Sadly I'm a B&W shooter so even if I shot a few frames on colour they'd be in the camera for 12 months+ (I just developed a roll I shot in Vegas last year.. will collect today. I did shoot 3 rolls of colour for a new video to come soon so if they look good maybe I'll try to shoot more but for a review I would check M6 shooters that shoot all Portra 400).

your videos are really great and helpful! thanks! i have a Leica sl2s and a leica t. the leica t i want to take with me everywhere, because the leica sl2s and its lenses are too big and too heavy. and this is where the choice of lens starts... i want to have one and a good one. i am thinking of voigtländer...(nokton 28 or skopar 28) but maybe i am wrong.... could you please help me with my choice? what lens would you recommend to me?

Thanks! If you want the best you will end up with 2 lenses. Skopar is tiny but not fast. Nokton or Thypoch offers faster aperture but is big. Thypoch 28mm video to come soon.

Hi Matt - Very informative and well presented video, really enjoy this real life trips and experiences with new products. With that said, this lens will retail for 1k usd, seems kind of steep IMHO. Do you think this is in line with voigtlander other pricing or have they raised prices like everyone else 😮. - Ralf

Thanks Ralf! Voigtlander prices vary from some being very affordable more "basic" models to 1K lenses. This is on the higher end. The Thypoch is cheaper. I look forward to testing that soon!

NIce, interesting lens. like it. Seeing you there in Lisbon kinda triggered me a bit as I had a very bad experience there a few years ago when for about only the 2nd time in my life I really felt threatened/uneasy/scared there - youth/locals in a local cafe really ganged up on myself and my girlfriend and if it wasn't for the (half hearted) intervention of a passing policeman we would have lost all our camera gear/money - and they actually followed us and had another go on that plaza where you were at near the start of your vid with the views of the bridge. That said, cant deny Lisbon is photogenic!

Why "almost perfect" .... ? Why is it seemingly always beyond these lens manufacturers to make a "perfect" version of a lens at any focal length ... or is it the case that if they did they would kill their business over time?
@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom
@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom 7 ай бұрын
Haha I’m sure they try to but they are probably trying to offer as much as they can within a price. The alternative is make it as good as possible and pass on the cost (Leica style). My guess is as you improve one feature another gets worse. (More glass = bigger etc etc).

@@rodnyg7952 We're not here to gawk at pretty photos, but rather want to assess real world performance. To be honest, the more bland and sterile the sample/test image is, the easier it is for me (the viewer) to analyze and determine how that fits into my everyday use. Creative artsy photography does quite a bit to mask how equipment performs; and thats why these videos exist.
