As a former foster parent we had to be checked by local sheriff, state police and had our fingerprints sent to the FBI. Then take a 3 hour course on first aid and handling medical emergencies. If I were to send my child to a friend’s house for a sleepover, but couldn’t contact them after a few hours, I’d be raging. I remember my parents getting me my first cell phone specifically because I was going to friends’ houses more often, and the rule was that I answered the call the first time, every time. The idea that the government is handing these children over to strangers, then saying “it’s fine if you don’t answer my calls” is extraordinary. I mean, my parents love me more than anyone in the world, but the idea of them not knowing where these kids are or what condition they’re in, and being fine with that, is astounding.
