Al Muqaddimah

4 жыл бұрын

As early as a decade before his death, Caliph Abd al-Mumin had chosen his son, Muhammad to be his heir. However, in a shocking twist, another one of Abd al-Mumin’s sons, Umar pushed him out of succession and had his brother Yusuf installed as the caliph. Abu Ya’qub Yusuf and Umar were sons of the same woman. The Almohad elites would, from this point on, mostly consist of the descendants of these two brothers.

Whenever i read about the Almoravids and Almohads I have this feeling of a great potential pissed away. They were pratically the same, ethnically, religiously, socially, although Almohad caliphs have more of a tendency to "lose their nerves", imagine what they could've accomplished if they joined forces instead of messing it up just to be "in charge" And finally they mutually destroyed each other, as I think you'll get to that in the next video, Almohads were a major factor in the end of the Almoravids from the south, and Banu Ghania (Almoravids remnants) were a major factor in the end of Almohad from the east. such a waste.

Why weren't they adapting to siege warfare? Couldn't they hire engineers among the Andalusians or educate some of their officers? Sorry if I sound annoyed but they just didn't learn anything from the morabet.

Frankly, throughout the history of Islam in Spain, they never really had a successful big siege. The borders of Islamic Iberia were sent in 711 or so and stayed that way, never expanded. Never really expanded. Muslims were good at field battle but laying siege on European terrain was difficult for them. Finding supplies and dealing with the Christians was just not something that they were able to do. That's why I believe Muslims would've never been able to conquer Europe even if they had won at Tours. I don't think there were good siege engineers in Muslim Iberia. They should've brought some from Egypt and Baghdad but well...

Spanish geography is a nightmare for conquering forces, it's not a coincidence that the term guerrilla is Spanish, and then on top of that you have the problematic of invading a land plagued with castles, it's an attrition kind of warfare without many decisive battles, plus Almohad center of power was north Africa, not Spain, which increased the cost of campaigning greatly, it's the lost at the battle of the Navas of Tolosa what bankrupted Almohad.
@nazeem8680

Almohads took 3 castles, they took Silves, they conquered all the castles and fortified towns of Norman Africa. They did have siege engines but siege was difficult in medieval period. Its not a "special trait" of almohads or almoravids, and almohads were not desert warriors, they were mostly mountain tribes of atlas and the plains of western morocco. You dont build an empire if you dont know how to siege.

@AlMuqaddimahYT

In the modern day, Andalusia refers to a region of Spain. However, in the past, al-Andalus was more an idea than a literal region. It was the region of Iberia that was under Muslim control. Whether it stretched to the Tagus or just the southern mountains. So, yeah, Andalusi would be a good term. Moor, itself, doesn't really mean anything.

@@AlMuqaddimahYT It's still heavily assosiated with the old Iberian Muslims expecifically, and (saddly) used as a racist term sometimes (many times).
