Oh my gosh I think I know how to help with the edema! I believe it is related to fertilizer but it requires some explanation. Bare with me... It's only a theory but so far it has cleared things up for me.. for now.. I have several different kinds of larger type and jewel alocasia and all of them have gotten edema for me at one point or another. I had not had this happen to my A. cuprea though (which is still my favorite

Edema has been an issue since day one with alocasias but not only this one but all of the ones that have “hard” leaves I’ve reached a point where I have figured out that the less water the better they do.

Very new to house plant Collecting like full commitment a week! I by chance saw a silver dragon for sale on the clearance yesturday. Had no idea what I was looking at but loved it. Today Iv repotted it in houseplant soil and perlite. I had quite a few corms and took one easy to remove. It looks pretty nice and healthy for being on the woopsie rail!! 🤣 I’m hoping I can keep this guy alive. Im so committed already is beautiful. I pop my corms in pon, perlite or damp sphagnum, in plastic tupperware with the highest possible humidity, without having water sogging things. I get pretty big first leaves, but usually it also depends on the size of the corm too. I sometimes spritz some fertilizer in there when I do all my plants. The bigger the corm, the bigger the plant you'll get from it. After they pop their first baby leaf I plant them in soil in really small plastic pots, box them up, and forget about them for a few weeks. I never lost a corm

Love this series! In the US silver dragon very available in big box stores. I have great luck with all alocasia in chunky aroid mix in Tera cotta. They want higher light, if too much light they will bend down. I feed heavily with liquid fertilizer every watering. Prevent spider mites with AzaMax diluted spray weekly and in soil. No edema issues. Only issue I have is they eventually flower and it can take a long time to put out new leaves. Experimenting with cutting the flower or letting it bloom. I think I need to feed more. I agree it takes a while for corm to mature. Prob just about a year but not faster. Love the water dish sprouting method. If you can grow outdoors do it! I think alocasia, begonia, calathea truly prefer outdoor conditions. They love dappled sun, heat and humidity. Agree silver dragon faster than green but I love a really black green dragon and lower light makes them darker.

I bought a Dragon Scale from a well known Scandinavian furniture store earlier this year. The plant was on sale and looked a bit beaten but okay. It had about 8 to 10 leaves and I lost some of them very early on probably due to me not fertilizing enough, and I also had the edema-problem. But it recovered quite well. It gave me an offspring right away that I took out of the pot and that does great! It has four hand-sized leaves by now. When I repotted the plant into an airier substrate this late summer, I took some bulbs out and stuck them in soil and covered them roughly. That's all I really did. 4 of them (probably more than 50%, didn't count) grew out within a month I would say. They have their first beautiful leaves now. Mother is making a new offspring again right now. The plant really seems like a wild weed to me, can't keep it from taking over my appartment. Don't know why though, have been doing the same with Alocasia Polly (from several plants) and nothing has been growing for close to a year now.

Great video! You mentioned that the care is similar to Colocasia. I have a Lemon Lime Gecko in the greenhouse that died with a few corms. Admitting defeat, I threw the soil with corms out next to the pond. Within two years, have been over run with dozens of massive plants and long roots 3-4’ clogging the pumps. So I think I will give my sad Silver Dragon Scale the same treatment this spring. I live in zone 8b and do have occasional freezing temp in Dec-Feb.

Hi I brought my first ever alocasia about a month ago a green dragon scale and a cupra red secret both very tiny babies, the dragon scale gave me a lovely new leaf ver quickly and the cupra has just given me one, I know its early days but I do hope they thrive! Weekly feed with GT force ( sold in Australia) 20cm is the smallest leaf of 18 leaves. Humidity 50-60% planted in an airy aroid mix, light non direct morning sun and standard house light for 10 hours.

I was looking forward to this video so much :-) Finally it´s here, yeayy, thank you 😀 Super useful and enjoyable video. I love these two alocasias because they are so stunning. Your azlanii is beautiful too. I have only the Silver Dragon: purchased as a baby, immediately removed all soil, put her immediately into pon. I suspected that she had thrips and I was right, so started treating it immediately when I brought her home. She had long stems, ruffled leaves and the red veins absent - don´t know why? Luckily at least no edema. I have her only for about 2 months (bought her super cheap - less than 10 euros). She has been living in a large glass vessel with water (over 70 % humidity) on a heater (cca 20°C), and is sprouting 4 babies, the 2 new leaves look ok and are much bigger and finally have the red veins and much shorter stems. She is generally recovering well - looking way better than when I bought her. I hope she will be fine, just needs more time to recover

Hi ! I got mine two months ago, it was a baby back then and had 3 veeery tiny little leaves. At first it grew 1 bigger but still quite small, and it lost all it's baby leaves when growing a very very bigger leaf, and I had to repot it because of root bound. Since that I had 2 bigger leaves. With the philodendron micans, they are the plants that grew the most impressive way. They are in the same chunky mix, the alocasia dragon scale is placed on the grown, 50 cm from a south south east window (i live in Brittany, France). The oldest leaf is bleaching a little bit but the fact that the light is so bright and goes from up to down seem to be very effective. I use Microferm (Activated EM) every single time I water it, as I do for pretty much all of my houseplants. I think those bacterias did all the work, without it I wouldn't have had so much success. I know because my alocasia Polly went dormant this winter and had grown only one leaf in 6 months, but as soon as I gave her Microferm she quickly grew plenty of roots and started growong leaves again. Back to the Dragon scale, it had oedemas during the first weeks but it eventually stopped doing that, I don't know what caused it to stop! Again it has not been here for a long time so I can't tell how long it will thrive with its current conditions, but I am very pleased with what I got so far. TRY MICROFERM

I have incredible success with corms in stratum and perlite. Also I am in NY so I run risk of my alocasia going dormant in winter if I’m not careful but I’ve also brought back many tubers with total root loss in the same mix. Also for the variegated Alocasia if you start getting green leaves you can just chop off all the leaves and try again, or depending on the size of the tuber, cut it up making sure you have a “node/aux bud”(not sure what they are called on an alocasia actually😂) on each piece, let callous and “prop” like a corm. Even with the jewel Alocasia.

Jeez! I'm not the only one with this, uhm, rather complicated relationship with their dragons! My silver was a lush plant like yours with quite some leafs. Died quite dramatically, digged itself out of the grave, then died once more as "outrovertly" and theatrically as it possibly could and now is about 5cm "tall" growing it's 3rd leaf 😜 Green dragon was an attentive spectator to all this drama (bought them at the time and place) and followed along, basically mimicking what it's silver sibling was displaying...

I've found the most success with perlite propogations in high humidity. I've used clear plastic cups with lids and have baby plants in at least 3 months normally! I always do the weakly, weekly fertilization once they start establishing

Heya, you said to mention if we had particularly fast success with alocasia corms - I literally bought my green Frydek corm on the 4th of August this year. Got it shipped to me, popped it in a plastic container with a lid in damp fern fibre and put it in my prop tank (has a heat mat), and it's just unfurled it's 3rd leaf. I wouldn't call it an established plant yet but it's certainly getting there! I was doing really well with my silver dragon until I decided to put it into pon! It lost all but one leaf, and most of it's roots. It's bounced back now and is back to two leaves and doing well but it definitely didn't love the transition.

Ooh, edema. I have the silver and the green and they both get it! 🙈 Green is definitely worse as far as visible edema but one of ny silver’s leaves looks like it’s had a bite taken out of it. Mine are in a very perlite-heavy chunky mix in a cabinet and in front of a fan. Haven’t a clue what to do. I might try bottom watering? I have ordered from a plant shop about two months ago (potflourri, located in Hamburg, Germany) and with the first order they sent me a baby alocasia as a welcome gift 🥰 I’ve hushed away from getting one so far because my plant journey has been less than a year and I heard alocasias were fussy. I had about 30 plants by now of which a third died, mostly in the beginning. So my experience is quite limited but improving (about half my KZbin algorithm is plants now 😂). And then I got a dark green dragon scale and was like “okay whatever, challenge accepted!” and so far she didn’t die :D

I’ve had really good results with corm propagation in perlite using plastic cups with water and semi-hydro fertiliser. It takes about two weeks for them to form roots and usually will have leaves in a month.

I’m new to alocasia, I got a corm of a variegated frydek, in April, it’s now a large plant with multiple babies, I heavy feed it and use mykos and enzymes, I’m sure that helps all my plants grow crazy. Plus the summer helps. But even my Florida beauty has 5 blooms. I’m also only growing indoors and I’m in northern Alberta Canada. Not great conditions. Also I only grow in soil. I have mine for much less time, obviously, as I started my plant journey not even a full year ago. The silver dragon is part of the first plants I ordered. It's doing well, it has some splashes of clearer sections on some leaves, very unique. In that first order, I also had a philo scandens brasil which I managed to kill. It arrived end of September I think, and the silver dragon didn't do a thing for a super long time. It wasn't getting worse, but it wasn't growing either. It had a half open leaf, and it stayed like this for months (granted, we also had a few long periods without heating in the building, so it was partly weeks with 12°C in my flat.) But as soon as it got warmer, it started growing. I don't think it lost a leaf until now. I have the green dragon for 2 months, got it a tiny bit bigger than the silver one. it grows pretty well, it wants to bloom (just like my black velvet). For now, and I'm touching wood, I had no pests on them. I had on some of my calatheas, but for now my alocasias are fine. Let's hope it stays like this :) They're part of my favourite plants in my collection.

Thank you! My Dragon Scale also always has edema. And I can no longer hear that everyone always says I would overwater her. I am glad not to be alone with this problem. I had her outside in the summer. During that time the edema stopped, humidity was max. 30% during the day. But was also not a solution, because the leaves then became crispy.🤣 Nevertheless, I love her very much. None of my other Alocasias have this problem. In my experience the silver dragon is a really slow growing plant. But there are no issues, so the difference relativizes over time.

I have a quite large green dragon scale (3big plants in a pot) and I have been battling with edema since the begining. It got super bad, then I showed it in a big prop box for a few months, and it disapeared. Since I took it out, it flowered a few times but then the edema came back. Not as bad as in the begining tho! But with its estabilished roots she grows super quick, I have got maybe 7 new leaves this growing season, and it is still pushing out 2. :)

My jewel alocasia corms from start to plant in about 6-8 months are started in perlite/water, it’s my most successful propagation method!

Both of my dragons won’t stop putting out leaves during growing season, and even during winter they do about 2 a month. Right now one plant has 16 leaves, and the other 19. I don’t do anything special to them. I use regular tap water, ambient humidity (50%) and they each have their own halo light that stays on 14 hrs a day. And the only reason why they each have their own light is because my house natural light is low. I water them when the pot feels a bit light. Their substrate is regular aroid mix. They are my easiest alocasia. Cannot grow a Frydek if my life depends on it.

All mine are in Leca. Both the Silver Dragonscale and Amazonica Ripple have just been re-potted and I found a few corms from each. The mothers are growing fantastically well under a grow light, (over 30cm leaves at the moment) and previous corms have now got 2 leaves and are also in Leca

Mine grow like crazy and big. I put basic cactus mix, tropical mix and perlite. I water it but stop short of flushing it and only 7-10 days with super super diluted 20-20-20. I try not to move it and pumps out larger leafs non stop. I’ve had to repot it so many times it’s almost like my monstera.

I was so sick of the edema that I was about to give up on this plant. It didn't matter how often I watered it. It could be literally wilting, but as soon as I put even a droplet of water in, it got edema again. The solution for this was PON, a water reservoir that I let dry out for two days and then filling it around half full again. And sitting in a west-facing window in blazing afternoon sun. Since then I get the drop at the tip, but nothing else. I have the green one by the way

I bought one a few months ago and I indeed overwatered it. I ended up with one leaf and no roots. It’s been in water for just over a month. Somehow it grew a new leaf but only one long root. I don’t know if I should repot it in pon now or let it grow more roots.

I have the same problem with oedema with my regular dragon scale. I tried growing it in pumice. No luck: oedema continued. I now have it growing in a light aroid mix and keep it only lightly watered and it is doing better (so far). My Silver Dragon Scale is much easier to care for.

Only the green one for me, since 2020. The water on the back I assumed was guttation so I stopped water in the evening and watering less frequently . Even if the soil is dry, if I see any hints of water at the back I don’t water until it’s gone down, it does come back a little after watering but knock on wood, no real issues for me. I read that they don’t want to completely dry out but I just ignore this to limit the edema. The mother plant is is home made aroid mix. Babies in pumice and water with less water than recommended for semi hydro, if I have more there’s a lot of guttation/edema, so less water in the reservoir. I don’t know what a full plant is but I do have a fairly large plant from croms in one year, two croms in the pot. For croms I’ve used aroid mix, pumice and water, and leca and water and all have worked for me. I haven’t had any issues at all. I’ve even forgot them in a south facing window in the summer and they got bone dry but they still grow once I remember to water them. Bonus: Early this year my mother plant got a variegated leaf, the new leaves get a tiny spot one white on them now. One of the babies from the MP has a variegated leaf too, more than the MP and I’m hoping that the next leaf is variegated too. (Off to read everyone elses comments, thanks for another video!) (And sorry for the rant)

I put mine in pon and in a humidity box until roots are growing, then I leave them out of the box and they're happy in normal house humidity. Anytime I did water first it was a big risk of rot (had a few success with that method too though!)

I only have the Silver Dragon Scale because I love silver plants. I was worried because it is an alocasia and they're famously known for being spider mite magnets, but so far no pests. I do fertilize my plants pretty regularly, and overall I don't have much pest issues. 🙂

The silver from one leaf cutting to a bushy pot in 10 months... green one keeps loosing the huge leaves I bought it with. Got few corns propagate in tree fern fiber, they are sprouting after 3 days 😀

I have both, the silver being a younger plant, but seems to do so much better than the green version. Having problems with something On the leaves very similar to what’s happening to yours but all along the edges of the leaves, no oedema though, treated it for a fungus, still no luck getting rid of it, I’m wondering if it’s getting a drought or something. Love it a lot and don’t want to give up on him but running out of ideas. 🤔

I have the green one. For me, it's a rather slow grower, but it gave me three pups this past summer (though each pup has only developed two leaves since then 🤣). I did notice that the spider mites tend to leave this one alone. I'm guessing it's because the leaves aren't thin like most other alocasia. I do have a variegated microrrhiza alocasia, and I'm happy to report that after having this plant for over a year, the variegation seems stable. If anything, it throws leaves with too much white fairly often. But even the pups from this one seem to have very stable variegation. I'm not sure if I'm just lucky with this particular plant or if it's just my growing conditions.

I've been propagating alocasia from corms with much success touch wood, but yeah it's very slow going 😂 I do the shallow puddle method in a bottle cap inside an upside down glass jar under my grow lights. Then when they start rooting I transfer to moist perlite in a glass jar inside a prop box...the last few I've done this way I've transferred to lechuza pon as they have been started with water roots. I think I will be avoiding using semi hydro with them unless they have been started with water roots I'm interested in whether pon reduces the amount of corms formed so hoping to have more info on that in the next year or two when I do repots. I'd very much welcome any videos on that if you make them in the future 😊 Love your videos thankyou they are so helpful 👌

My silver dragon alocasia is only 4 months old and large but I can't stop the leaf browning. I use: aqua treated water, grow lights, bottom watering, gnat tags, nematodes, mosquitoe bits, neem oil, and humidifier. What else can I do? I live in the US

i got a silver dragon scale for fathers day and it's been plagued with edema. i've never had issues growing plants before and this one has been one of the biggest challenges i've dealt with. totally bums me out because the plant is so gorgeous but holy crap it has been one of those plants where i feel like pulling my hair out because it looks like its dying and all of the soil and light conditions seem to be perfect and it doesnt matter.

All 4 of my alocasias have edema and I have been struggling with figuring out what to do about it. The leaves are turning to mush and I would love to save them before it’s too late. Any recommendations on how to go about saving them or stopping the edema process?

I had it on my philodendron splendid and prikked it with a needle to drain it. It didn't come back so is a rather small blemish on one leaf

@@sherryporsch9349 they are potted in home Made soil mix. I use perlite, orchid bark, and a light mix of potting soil/worm castings in pots with drainage. To be honest I am not even sure if it is edema. The leaves seems to turn yellow/brown turn to mush and fall on all my alocasias since we went into fall (USA)

I got my green one from ebay small and I should have spend more but it was from someone to me so didn't want to ask for the more expensive one which I should have. It was less than a year ago I got my silver from a garden center for 6.50 it was less then the green and way bigger. I have had no real joy with the green. Its never passed 3 leaves at one time My silver has a bunch of leaves. But the silver did get aphids and the green didn't. I love both Great vid

I"ve got both, grown from little babies in leca, both matured pretty well over the summer. I've checkd: Dragon Scale does have a tiny bit of edema, Silver Dragon does not. But it's nighttime and I have a feeling it will go awy during the day. Could it be temperture related? I did have some edema issues when the temp dropped to 22-21C.

Yeah I agree with you the oedema/edema seems to be much worse in the winter month when the temperatures drop for sure 💚🌿

I have both and the silver was really sizing up this summer but since it’s getting colder I’ve had to cut off leaves due to yellowing. Mealy bugs are a huge problem on the silver but not the green

trilobite? I think isopods are the bugs you find under logs in the woods (but that plant does look that way)

My 7 month silver I had to repot it due to root bound, 4 leafs per month minimum all summer while producing flowers too, for my aroid mix I used orchid pon for this one Green I got it July 2 leafs per month and some flowers but gets less lighting and deferend aroid mix, I gave it away Edema first time heard it from you never seen it on my plants Pest some white spots when I got the silver, treat it never seen them again but I had a carnivorous plant next to it Prop I removed some corns with leafs from silver and cuprea but from my bambino that died I just put 2 in soil I think it was an aroid mix now the 2 babies plants are at individual pots and 2/3 of the size of the original plant Καλημέρα

No issues with my silver and green dragons. They sit in a bright south facing position, shaded from direct sun. They’re planted in a standard potting mix in plastic pots and get watered once a week. I sometimes forget and they dry out but this causes no problems. They are the easiest plants I own. I wish my Albo and Thai monsteras would behave as reasonably 😂
