I first read Tom Neale's book about 20 years ago and have been fasinated by his choices ever since. You have to remember Tom was used to the much more simplistic 1950's lifestyle and was quite an accomplished engineer. If you had looked inside his home you may have seen his homemade method of producing electricity, quite ingenious. Could I or would I live like he did - no way, I simply do not have what it takes but I do admire his spirit.

I know a german sailor who also lived there for a few months: Hugo Wehner on his Sailboot "Tagedieb". This was in the late 1970ies. The hut back then was much more rustico and there were some chickens roaming around. He entered the Lagoon without engine. Other Sailors joined him for weeks and eventually they helped him sail out the Lagoon and he sailed to New Zealand / Australia.

Groovy, Groovy, Groovy episode. A weekend alone has been alright for me from time to time. When I am writing or something working on a new song I enjoy being alone, but years alone might be to much. A couple of dogs and cats would help for awhile. I enjoy humans to much to shut myself off from the world. However, in today's world with all of the political bull crap and violent, I have said to my GF more than once that I would love to sail away to a remote island paradise, and live there for the rest of our lives. Pipe dreams more than anything else, I am sure.

Zero chance of living by myself like that. I agree with Warren that the most freedom you really want is to sail about places. Interact socially but pull away for a day or week here and there.

What you are doing is like hiking the Pacific Crest trail (PCT.) You move from spot to spot, but you have a lot more things around you, (kind of like living in a travel trailer.) The PCT hikers have to depend on small towns to resupply their food along the 2653 miles, (from Mexico to Canada.) They carry everything they need on their backs. Over 2,000 people a year attempt to hike the PCT each year.

Survive here, yeah probably, but a completely deserted island with no structures, no water tanks... that would get real hard, real fast... Just collecting rainwater to drink would be a chore... hopefully if shipwrecked, and you were able to beech the boat, you'd have some supplies, maybe coolers and totes to funnel rain water into.. but if it's just a few jugs, you'd be running out of water and waiting for the next rainfall constantly... On a side note, I have a friend who has a tattoo sleeve on one arm, a few different memories meshed together in one drawing, it represents her survival of a multi year battle with cancer. Thirty or so years later she got throat cancer, about a 2-3 yr battle she also won, now she's thinking of doing the other arm. I was just wondering if you've ever explained any significance to the tattoos you both have... I get the usual stuff, the swallows... mostly curious about Warren's arm, where, when and any meaning behind it... Erica's back tats look very cool too... none myself, but when tastful and done well, the art work amazes me.
@WEsail2 ай бұрын
Wow thank you, awesome message, and we definitely agree and recognize (more than most probably) the struggle involved in an isolated life like that, struggle for sure!! So the tattoos for me (Warren) are more decorative than anything, not that they have no meaning... My back is a tribal type drawing of birds I did back in my early 20's when I was in flight school and flying a lot and thought I would become a professional pilot of some kind... The arm is traditional Marquesan and it actually does symbolize quite a few different things, most notably my life of travel and the fact that I worked a lot with my hands... Anyways, thanks again, hope that answers your ??s

Suwarrow is part of the Cook Islands, which are self governing in association with Aotearoa New Zealand. I think that in Tom Neale's time the Cook Islands were governed by Aotearoa New Zealand under a United Nations mandate. We governed very badly, in Western Samoa, Cook Islands, Niue, and the Tokelau Islands. Dick Scott's book about our governance of the Cook Islands is called "The years of the Pooh Bah" and is well worth reading.
