This is a complete playthrough of the MS-DOS CD-Version of Alone in the Dark. I have cut away things like saving a game or leaving unimportant stuff behind. It should still work as a walkthrough for anyone who would like to experience the ending himself :)

I'm 13,but I'm fascinated by 80s to early 2000s technology, I have a windows 200 pc which my uncle gave to me, but Noone knew the password so I formatted it, and put freedos on it, also installed windows 3.1, I got this game on gog and I tried to play it on that pc but it said that the disc needed to be in, and my CD reader is damaged, but it also can't play music

Exactly the same for me. I eventually ended getting a Cd-rom and the Cd version of the game but as much as I love the CD soundtrack for me the true experience was always to play with sounds only, the level of immersion still gets me to play this game the same way from time to time nowadays.

4:36 I love this shot so much. It so clearly illustrates the difference between the protagonist, the antagonist, and the player. A monster peers out the window, the main character doesn’t realize just how much danger he will be putting himself in by entering the mansion, the one with the clearest idea is you, yet you make him enter the house, and you will both soon find out just what you’re in for.

I remember playing this as a teenager. How hyped the low polygon graphics were back then. This game is notoriously hard. Not only it's got apocryphic puzzles, but the user interface was kinda the hardest fight in the game. The cool cinematic camera angles had the drawback of not knowing where the character is actually facing which made hitting monsters quite difficult at times and the movement reminds me of a flea stuck in a puddle of tar carrying the piano from the loft. And about the game's plot and puzzles. You actually had to read into the books, notes, letters, parchements and stuff and think. The solutions to the puzzles were not offered on a silver platter, you had to work for them. It's a very cool game and it's got a tingling atmosphere. Scary, too. The story is very good.

You're awesome for taking the time to do this. I have one fond memory of this game when I was a kid. I'm at some doctor appointment and all I can think about is wanting to get home to play this for the first time. That day was perfect, I got home at night, it was a weekend, and there was a decent thunderstorm which accompanied the gameplay perfectly. I literally sat alone in the dark, thunder rumbling, rain coming down, in my basement, and even though the graphics suck now, they were awesome back then. I was totally immersed and watching you play brings it all back. Thank you for sharing!

The whole game seems to me to have occupied 4 floppy discs and 9 the second title. Alone in the Dark, Monkey Island and Syndicate are in my opinion among the best games of the early 90s P.S. Though as others said; I can’t recall the music playing for me. Maybe it did and I just don’t remember. I swear it was eerily silent though. I don’t think I ever made it very far in this. DAMN !!! Even i've completed this game as a kid and now after re-watching it i'm puzzled as of how i managed to complete it back then. It took me weeks or months to do it without any tutorial back in the days. This game deserves a remake but not like the other ones in the series but a completely new remake that has this particular feel to it.

I remember playing this as a 5 year old. It was very haunting to say the least. The ''monster'', as I would call it, would always scare me. I was pretty bad at the game, didn't really know what to do. But hearing the ''monster'' walk almost into the room I was in, made my buttcheeks clench and had me sitting at the edge of my seat. Good times.

The sound was so important in creating the atmosphere in these older games. I think the sound (minus the voice-"acting") still works very well to this day. 😊

Yeah, better controls higher-res backgrounds and a few polygons more (not too much, to not loose the style) and it would be gold. Though I could see it go the Resident Evil Remake (the first one) route, too (regarding the graphics). 🤔

I love how these older horror games create the sense of terror using storytelling and narrative rather than high resolution graphics and jumpscares. Something about the low quality graphics make it more disturbing as it makes the me (the viewer) complete the image in my mind.

I remember playing this as a kid. I still very clearly remember that window at the very start of the game, and that I had no idea what I was doing, so every time I walked up to the window, a dog would jump through and kill me. I never ended up getting further than that because I was too young to know I could have pushed the cupboard, but I distinctly remember having nightmares about it. I would dream that the character would run around and jump through the window to escape it, but I never ended up being able to do it when I played the game IRL.

Hear, hear! It has so much potential, but they keep trying to make it something it's not. It's like they say, "Let's make Alone in the Dark, but THIS time---", and at that point they need a Carnby-esque slap.

The camera angles definitely inspired resident evil. I had only seen screen shots , so i didn't know, how many things were taken to make re. The loud footsteps , zombies, tank controls , inventory screen, camera angles, creepy music , female/male character choice, huge mansion with creepy puzzles and traps, and notes everywhere explaining the story. Surprised for 92 the polygons are really good. It seems they used a limited color pallet. Due to restrictions alot of dark green and pink but i think it helps hide the faults , by making have a certain artistic style with the colors.It's very cool seeing the building blocks that made the survival horror genre. I've heard sweet home also inspired re, but haven't ever seen actual gameplay of it either. I might have to watch a play through of that and see what was taken from it as well.

Peeps seeing the graphic-quality now falls to the floor laughing, but this game was _highest_ possible game-tech, and so much that the game was featured in non-gaming media, as an example of what could be done with sc. _Home-computers_ ! There was of cause also the usual outcry from the Karens og that time, warning for the horrific content, that without doubt would destroy a whole generation of youth! The game was also Marked with " _For adults only_ " 21 years was afair the advised age-limitation! The game also spearheaded every survival-horror game that would follow. This game was indeed a game-changer. The play-through in this video is avoiding all the traps, and also leaves out all the strange and gruesome books, that actually was an important part of the atmosphere in the game. That is making the gameplay look simpler than it actually was. AITD was _not_ an easy game. But imho still with _gameplay_ that place it as one of the best in the genre!

Wow for a game to have came out in 1992, the graphics aren't even bad looking. Makes me wonder what console was it on.
@sumdood8563

To my knowledge, the only console port for the first game was on the 3DO. The sequel was also released on the 3DO, along with ports to the Saturn, and PS1. I don’t really like the PS1 and Saturn releases as they attempt to “update” the original game with textures. I don’t really like the added textures because they give all the characters really stupid looking faces. The third game was a PC exclusive, and the fourth game was released on the PC, PS1, PS2, Dreamcast, and GBC. The abomination was on the XB360, PC, and PS3. There was also another attempt at a reboot that was another PC exclusive and attempted at a multiplayer mode in a game called Alone in the Dark.

Also, just pushes the chest on top of the trapdoor it stops the zombie from levitating. And get rid of all empty bottles and first aid kits once the bottle is out of it, it's a useless box.
