Haven't had a chance to play yet, but most of what I've heard about it sounds like it's an example of what some people call a mid-card game, something in a sweet-spot between indie and AAA you don't see as much these days, so it had the freedom to takes some risks with direction and gameplay but also had a development budget higher than "the loose change we found digging through the breakroom couch".

@hartthorn7 ай бұрын
Very glad to hear this one final hit the mark. I've loved AITD since the first one, and fully understand how much it has been failed. But as an entire aside, your comments on the game and story made me think of an idea: What about a horror game type thing in this vein, with lots of investigation, puzzles, and even more "decision" moments. But the twist is that the story itself will change based on what you do. Like, the anti-save scumming narrative. Simple examples: Push the chest in front of the window to block the monster jumping in later? It pops out of a chest in the corner. Kill the monster in Chapter 1, you get attacked by a mob in Chapter 3. Sneak past the monster, and you have to save the townspeople FROM it in Chapter 2. Deeper examples: Deciding which lead to track down first determines whether you're dealing with vampires or psychic aliens. Have decision trees that fundamentally fork, ne'er to meet again. Clues dropped in the beginning can wind up having 3 different explanations depending on which path is taken. And this might mean literal gameplay differences, shifting focuses between combat, stealth, puzzle solving, and investigation. Just a weird thought experiment.
@jordanmalone25477 ай бұрын
You should for sure check out shadow of doubt. Although it isn’t a horror game, it has all of those aspects in terms of investigation and puzzle solving, I’m imagining a game that has all of that with horror, good lord that would be an absolute BANGER. IMHO, personally think that AitD 3's horror is underrated due to the surface Western theme. There's some f-ed up deaths, monsters, scenes and undead in that game, nobody takes seriously just because they're wearing cowboy clothes while trying to kill Carnby. Like there's this one zombie that's been kept in filth for so long by the main antagonist, he's obsessed with bathing. And you can give him a soap instead of fighting him directly, and he instantly MELTS from it. If that scene was in a modern game? I think it would near instantly go viral on pure WTF factor. Just for one example how that game genuinely creeped me out as a kid.

Despite it's glaring flaws, I still see Alone in the Dark 2024 a successful and much needed revival to this badly mismanaged series of 30+ years. This new game is already cult status material with solid gameplay, engaging story, characters and creepy atmosphere. It will gain an audience in due time and be an ideal ENTRY point for newcomers to the series, something the series has long lacked. The 1992 original (plus trilogy) is too old for most gamers to get into. New Nightmare is an underrated classic, but is also too old for most new gamers to get into and the 2008 game is a jumbled mess of mixed styles and ideas much worse than RE6.

This looks like a very solid revival to the grandfather of horror games but also looks too simple at times. Nonetheless I'm glad that Alone In The Dark is back!

What you said about the price point setting expectations seems to be coming true. Looking at the Steam reviews it's still mostly positive but the bad reviews are people complaining about the graphics and some really minor things like frame drops and loading during cutscenes. Things that are perhaps flaws but not enough to earn a thumbs down. I can only imagine that the $60 is why it's getting those. Still I'm happy to see what they did with it and I'm glad the franchise is back on track.

Im still playing my first play through and i been wanting to play this game since last year. I am enjoying Alone in the dark. I never played the 1992 alone in the dark, but i respect the game. Im sad no one is talking about this game.

Loved the "cabrit sans cor" line. Remembered me of Gabriel Knight.

Aha so one of the main guys from Frictional Games (Mikael) is also in charge of stuff here...no wonder the horror and the psychological aspects were so good.

The music piece you used during the platypus portion sounded definitely like the theme for the thieves guild in QFG4: Shadows of darkness, but it definitely wasn't the actual theirves guild theme, are you able to tell me if is from a game ir was it just some random music u chose? Great video also

Your detailed approach to this review of the source material and your experience with the original game. Plus your knowledge of its history and lore surrounding it. Has provided me with clarity that I can make an educated decision on whether I should buy this title. Alone in the Dark being the source of homage that many great horror game franchises derived from such as resident evil and silent hill, both that i thoroughly enjoyed playing makes my decision even easier. The context, cross referenced with the visual presentation where ideas were expanded upon in other franchises was quite interesting to learn and how this adaptation kept and also expanded on the original alone in the dark but provided you and perhaps others with the intention that it still kept close to its roots when other iterations of the same game lost what made the original great. This is how a review should be written or in this case viewed. Only someone who has experienced the original and has now had access to remake could only make an accurate assessment of its counterpart. I did not play the original because i did have a PC at that time, only a console, but none the less I knew of that game and its caliber, and was introduced to it with new nightmare on ps1 as well as the likes of clock tower resident evil and silent hill from a genre i absolutely love. Keep the reviews coming. This is the reason I'm getting the game, which is at a discount on ps5 at the moment, too 😅, and this was the reason I subscribed today.
