Alone in the Dark - Classic Mac Games

Here is the Macintosh version of Alone in the Dark. Only real difference is the music really, which i think is at least better than the ad-lib music on the DOS version. But i prefer the music of the CD edition. So probably the best way to play this game today would be the CD edition through Dosbox. The mac version is just so much more buggy. Especially using emulators. Even had to load a save game just to get past the attic..

That's the music i had when i grew up... I can't find music of this everywhere so i regularly come back here to listen to this video... Thanks about it ! As you said the emulators are way more buggy than my old MAC...

This is the music I grew up with as well. Back in 2012 when I recorded this, there was not a single gameplay video on the entirety of KZbin. Perhaps that has changed now.

@@Rolletott From what i have seen... Not much unfortunately. Macintosh is quite a forgotten piece of history... Way more than its predecessor the Apple II in my opinion.

I have got way to used to dos emulation, every mac version of a game was sharper. Mac deserves easier emulation

Graphics are so much better than the PC version, specially on the CD version which has the whole scenery remastered for hi-res. Gameplay is also better, where you could just use Shift for run instead of tapping up. I was able to get by the attic bug using the G3 Throttle extension. I wonder why all PC versions didn't have a choice for hires, as well as for most other games as well.

Because the PC version came years before the Mac version. The Mac tended to be rather late on the scene and back in 1992, the average PC was a 286/386 with VGA. Hi-rez (or VESA) required a VESA card which was expensive and not that common. By 1994 it WAS more common but VESA still was quite demanding on the CPU. Don't forget that PCs back then were not designed for multimedia - the Pentium changed all that.

@@redavatarIf anything, Mac was ahead of the game when it came to graphics and sound. DOS was absolute ass. Things changed after Win 95 and Macs never kept up after.

I remember my IIfx barely being able to render this game. It finally would freeze when the beast came inside the basement. Wish I could get the software on my current computer and finish it. As I understand, the game had no delays built into the code, so its insane on a modern machine.

This game was pretty much unplayable without an FPU. Many old macs thankfully had such a slot.

the mac midi soundtrack always sounded better than the dos and orchestrated versions. much cooler!

Graphics are a bit better on the mac version, but the music is goofy as hell! Would be more appropiate on a game based on Beverly Hills Cop, not on a blooming horror game

Even with the awesome Cd soundtrack, I always preferred to play this game without the music. For me this is one of the very few games in history that the ambience is so good that is better without music getting in the way.

I've personally always been able to beat the attic bug by constantly pressing enter to open inventory before you reach the bottom, if you can open inventory when you reach the bottom, you beat it.

I suspect that the attic bug has something to do with CPU-cycles or something. Way back in the day on our 20 year old mac it never was a problem. Some behaviors in the game is affected by this. For example when picking up an item (items spinning really fast).

I managed to solve the "stairs" bug on the Mac version like this: Notice that every time you SAVE the game, the game creates a new animation, and doesn't continue the old one. So to solve the bug, all you need to do - is to SAVE the game while going down the stairs, and then LOAD the game, and after half of a second, SAVE the game again, and LOAD it again (so you SAVE and LOAD frame after frame), until finally you will LOAD the game at the very end of the stairs animtaion, but now you will find the animation has stoped and the player won't go up again. Enjoy!

by the way, the dreaded attic bug can be overcome by trying to go down the stairs walking backwards, and if my memory serves me right, i think you could also try walking down with gun in hand. this might not work on the first try but it's bound to work sooner or later! :)

Oh, the awful music, the awful colors... But apart from that, amazingly smooth! Just to say, when speaking of the floppy audio you probably shouldn't say "AdLib music", because the CD-ROM version actually also featured AdLib output, the way it works is it plays recorded music directly from the CD. And, in reverse, the floppy version offers SB music as well. So both version offer both SB and AdLib output.
