The Admiral Kuznetsov, the Russian navy's sole aircraft carrier , has not been on duty for eight years, and it is increasingly unlikely that it will ever be on duty again. So in recent months, the Kremlin has, according to social media reports, transferred sailors from the decrepit ship to the army and sent them to fight in Ukraine, writes Forbes analyst David Axe.
"This is a startling revelation that highlights the Russian military's manpower crisis... and also highlights the dilapidated state of the Russian navy's largest warships, most of which are Cold War leftovers," the analyst wrote.
That the Russians are apparently pulling men off the Kuznetsov is not surprising, David Axe notes, given that the Kremlin is going to extreme lengths to mobilize more troops to replace those killed in Ukraine. The alternative to stripping the ships of their crews could be a nationwide draft, which would be politically risky for Russian President Vladimir Putin's regime, he writes.
Moreover, the decrepit 39-year-old Kuznetsov is unlikely to return to sea. In October 2018, the ship was seriously damaged when the dry dock where the aircraft carrier was undergoing repairs sank. Then, in December 2019, a fire broke out on the Kuznetsov itself.
The navy considered decommissioning the damaged ship, but then decided to repair and modernize it. The Kuznetsov was scheduled to return to sea in 2022. But in December 2022, a fire broke out on the ship. The ship was supposed to leave the port of Murmansk in northern Russia in the spring, for the first time in eight years. Instead, the vessel remains moored in Murmansk, the analyst notes.
"Any other navy might simply end the losses, write off the scorched ship and build a new one in its place. But Russian industry is probably incapable of building a direct replacement for the Kuznetsov or any other large warship - which is why so many of the Russian navy's large ships are former Soviet ships, with decades of worn-out hulls and machinery," the analyst notes.

Putin’s 2nd military in the world: tank turrets that fly, an Air Force that doesn’t, a single navy aircraft carrier decommissioned for 8 years with a smoky chimney, a reserve of caged T-34 tanks which are useless, and units of Russ infantry on Vespa bikes.

And their biggest technological advancement in tanks is to fix the gun in place and weld on a shed. The old saying "if it works, it ain't stupid" ......but it doesn't work! For damn sure, not against our Javelins!

#56 in the world, with a handful of American technology, old American technology, has brought the 2nd military in the world to a dead halt for almost 3 YEARS ! ! That just goes to show the difference between 1st and 2nd!

I saw this coming many years ago. Most of the Soviet Navies big ships were built in Ukraine and now that’s over. Russia has shipyards with aged equipment and lack of skilled personnel who cannot build anything beyond a frigate/corvette sized surface ship. They also can still build effective submarines albeit at a slow production rate but all in all, the Russian navy is but a faint shadow of its former Soviet glory.

When you think that for a "Naval Power", they had only 1 aircraft carrier. They have 0 now, and there are small countries with at least one. Without sea airpower, their fleet is useless and unprotected.

That's why, all the big talks from Fox, RT, and Co on Russia's behalf notwithstanding, I keep saying: you don't really need the US mighty Air Force, with over 10,000 NATO grade fighter jets, bombers, tankers, and AWACS type aircraft to pummel Russia's entire armed forces to dust. The SMALLEST of the US branch of armed forces, the US Marines CORPS (not the US Marine CORE, like our great Leader Trump called it, wrote about it).... alone, with ~800 or so units of LARGELY vertical-take-off/vertical-landing capability (F-35B, Harrier jets, AH-IZ Viper gunships, Super Stallions/King Stallions & 65 or so KC-130 flying gas stations) ... would be enough to turn most of Russia's various strategic & tactical bases, from old German Konigsburg (now Russian Kaliningrad) in the Baltics to its far east, Bering Sea region, by Alaska... to unusable bases. All Russians could say is: We have NUKES, more nukes than y'all have... so that ain't gonna happen! That's all they could say.... CONVENTIONALLY, Russia's military --- structurally, logistically, and tactically ---- is NO MORE advanced, no more capable than what they had under Comrade Stalin, in WW2: it's largely a MEAT GRINDER APPROACH to fighting... able & willing to use 5, 10, or 20 men to overwhelm an opponent's 1-2 counterparts. But in WW2, Russia was still growing. And in the USSR's height, 1960 - 80's era, the Russians put a dozen or so NON-RUSSIAN neighboring people/states into the Russian military and make those people WORK for the Moscow-based Russians, a northern European people. Today, Moscow/White Russians are in a rapid population decline. The large SOLDIERS they're will/able to use against a TINY MILITARY like Ukraine that had NO AIR FORCE or NAVY, & a defense budget in pre-2022 or just $6B.... THAT RUSSIA MILITARY's men... they wouldn't even last more than a few months, against a nation like America that could take out thousands of such men with a few thousand WELL PLACED missiles and bombs "released" from 150 to 500 miles away, distances that NO FOOT SOLDIERS --- even suicidal ones like Russians --- could even traverse, before they're all turned into ashes... Again, Ukraine doesn't even have 2% of that American military capability; and that's why the Russian military looks so menacing, in southern and eastern Ukraine... ON FOOT & in literal WW2 tanks and other analog era armored vehicles!

I read somewhere that repairmen or simple metal thieves stole a significant amount of ship's cables and sold them as metal.

That aircraft carrier was always a joke. It could not maintain service out at sea. It repeatedly had to be towed back to port.

It's quite possible that the fuel was sold in the black market. Like what happened in China with their ICBMs, where the fuel was sold.

Most funny thing is that her sistership was refitted and modernized with no problems by China as the Liaoning. The Chinese were able to make a descent ship out of it. Yeah, Russia is the greatest! (loser)
