Clay I had no idea who you were when this season started. I've been enjoying your videos here since I found you had a channel, and I have learned a great deal, so thank you for sharing. The more I see of the lake and location, the angrier I get, it honestly seems like irresponsibly dumb place to hold a challenge like this. No salmon because of river blockages, huge population of hungry, untouchable bears because of no salmon, lake levels that make it almost impossible to fish without ahuge effort, pathetically low large game numbers, and the frankly ridiculous area limits. All animals range over whatever acreage they need to in order to get enough to eat based on the environment, the producers not adjusting for the environment is just insane. Regardless, thank you for giving us this perspective on your time with the show, it's fascinating to follow along.

If you watch the bear's initial reaction to Rose when she first seen it, it bolted away from her. The bear's attitude changed when she hesitated and it went from defensive to offensive. Had she recognised that reaction quickly enough an capitalized on it, I don't think the bear would have been a problem. A black bear is highly unpredictable so nothing was for sure.

Enjoyed your updates Clay! My wife has always supported my hunting, and even seems to be interested in my rehashing the hunt on my return home. But I am a little surprised at her being pulled into the series as she has been...she even reminds me when it’s Thursday and ‘Alone’ comes on tonight. One tends to lose track of what day it is when retired you understand. :-) My concern for your success had me worried for your venison safety from bears. I understand that during smoking the meat is vulnerable and at this point you’ve taken precautions to slow a bears access and also alert you of his presence. After the smoking is complete, I’m hoping you’ll go vertical with the storage of the meat...out of a bears or any other critters reach. By the way, the Twin Oaks guys are all rooting for you! Pappy, the owner of the farm where Twin Oaks resides, is big into brain tanning deer hides...probably does a half dozen or so a year. He always try’s to pull the Tom Sawyer painting the Pickett fence technique on me when it comes to stretching the hides after smoking...I don’t fall for it! :-) Side note, doesn’t Robert Redford wear a deer head cap at one point during the movie Jeremiah Johnson? I love that movie! “I Hatchet Jack being of sound mind and broke legs, do hereby leave this bear rifle to any man who might find it...lord hope it be a white man! Always a good review and thoughts. I do want to comment that another method I have seen (never used) was using the deer head skin as a covering over your head. I doubt this method is any better but I wonder if you have any thoughts. I also wonder if my rationing your deer, as thinly as you mention, doesn’t that keep you in body mass loss verses protecting the body mass that you still have. I was glad you mentioned it too. Lastly, I would appreciate a video on the hide tanning. I have seen different methods and some are more concerned with white or pretty finished hides so I wonder if your methods preserve the hide for use and not focusing on aesthetics.

Watching Theresa try so hard to get that line set for the fish and what it did to her was almost heart breaking. She was so close to hypothermia and when that sets in she wouldn't even be able to call for help because the confusion and delirium that sets in would cripple her. She's incredibly tough, doing that fully fed in prime health would be very difficult much less 25 days into full starvation mode. Can't believe she didn't have a raging fire waiting for her when she returned from the water, would have been my number 1 task before even getting close to the water. This leads me to think confusion from lack of food is already setting in, its getting a bit dangerous. Hope there are more staff on site than we can see. They have to have a process for help in situations where the individual is incapacitated and unable to call for help themselves, right ? Just curious.

Particularly where the deer was hit, how long it took you to transport, cut and processed the meat and how long it took to smoke. Did all 50 lbs fit in that nice smoker you built? I wish I could get 50# off a deer. I think I average ~27# trimmed and cleaned from our little whitetails. In your situation I'd probably get ~32# having 0 waste. For a 2000 calorie diet you'd be eating 3 lbs a day so maybe 3 weeks at best if you had some berries and mushrooms as filler or the deer was a little fattier than normal.

Yeah, there was no way I could eat that many calories and make it last.

Are the contestants allowed to defend themselves with self made spears, if so then are they legally allowed to take any bear that attacks them ,because a bear harvest would be a gold mine of survival.

Looks like you had the brains of several deer. I have never seen that much brain from one deer.

that must have been a smart deer

Not smart enough.🙄

Yeah, I don't mean to be disrespectful, but I have brain tanned many a hide. A TV guy once told me, " take me to the most remote place you know, or somewhere we can make it look that way " Don't believe everything you see on TV.

🤷♂️all that came from the deer I shot. No one was giving us anything. It was probably about a cup if you measured it out, then I mixed it with water to make the slurry.
@brianlucas76043 жыл бұрын
@@clayhayeshunter maybe you mixing it with the water made it look like more. Peace

Lewis & Clark ate #8 pounds per person of meat per day. I’d say 50# lasts 15 days for a high energy sustainable lifestyle

This was the episode that proved me wrong about rose. They didn't do a great job of representing her skills on the intro to her and that woman is bad ass. I thought she was going to be gone by now.
@clayhayeshunter3 жыл бұрын
She's a tough gal and it's not easy to judge what's actually going on by what they show on the episodes. I'm glad they incorporated all that here.

Hi Clay, Was using some of the deer meat as fishing bait an option? I saw that in SE 6 and It made me think that would be a viable option for you too. Perhaps you did and they didn't show it or maybe it was a rules issue. Just curious, not trying to be a dick.

Slightly ripe deer meat sure works for catfish.

I believe that due fishing regulations on Chilko Lake, contestants weren’t allowed to use fish bait or barbed hooks
@lainedebrow20173 жыл бұрын
The only fishing I've done in Canada was in a Provincial park. No bait allowed, lures only. Also no motors allowed. Pretty restrictive.
@lainedebrow20173 жыл бұрын
And as someone mentioned, no barbed hooks
@EvertfromNederland3 жыл бұрын
@@lainedebrow2017 i knew about the barbed hooks and what not. Ever since that accident on SE 4 in Mongolia were the hook got stuck in her hand, barbed hooks where banned. No bait allowed huh not even the meat from your deer. Alright thanks.

That story of the Native person coming out of the woods there is another story based on his life called the last true Native American who pops out of California wilderness in 1920. The book used to be called Last Indian if you have older copies then early/mid 1990's but that got changed due to what 90% Natives want to be called either Native American or Native. A small 10% want to be Native Indian, trying to take back the bad word they are called but that seems to be a lost cause.

I remember reading about Ishi, the last of the Yahi Indians. Later read that it was written many decades afterwards and was not very accurate.
@caseysmith5443 жыл бұрын
@@markhatfield5621 Yeah the one I mentioned is from 1920 interview and even that was not very accurate as where he was living would have been impossible or nearly impossible even for back then in early 1900's. Yet to read the book but other have said that where he lived was impossible or nearly impossible to be free and unnoticed.
