Huub and Martin investigate what role the Dutch coast plays in our lives. Along the way they meet people who live along this eternal high tide line. Martin and Huub follow the coast through 5 provinces from the Zwin in Zeeland to the Eems estuary in North Groningen. This way we see that our coast is more than a sea wall. It is also the place of heroic stories, traditions and entertainment. The place to stroll, eat ice cream and enjoy the sun. Along the way they also meet the great-great-...-great-grandson (x 10) of Michiel de Ruyter.
Huub and Martin start on the Zeeland coast, in the Drowned Land of Saeftinge. They stroll through this wonderful area: a maze of mudflats, salt marshes and creeks, the largest brackish water area in Europe. The last border marker is located just next to the last dune breach. This is where their journey can really begin. They take the Western Scheldt Ferry and cross the Scheldt. At the statue of his illustrious ancestor, Huub meets the great-great-great-grandson (x10) of Michiel de Ruyter. He also has an impressive meeting with 90-year-old Kees Pouwelse, who witnessed the Allied bombing of his coastal village as a child.
