I think it depends on the products. I'm a weekly washer. I can tell by the feel of my hair whether my hair is still moisturized and my cuticles are still lowered. I use a spray bottle mid week and moisturize any dry areas. I agree there is more shed hair but just being patient works for me. Also I soak my hair then remove my shed hair. They slide out then. Works for me. I only finger detangle also, unless I'm going to a stylist. No combs brushes or fine tooth combs. I agree with the trims also. I agree slip is key as well as moisturizing products. I sleep on wet hair sometimes but dry as much as possible and pineapple.

Trini Girl Natural I soooooo agree. Weekly washer over here too and just like you I just check what my hair feels like and re-moisturize accordingly.

Good advice! I only wear wash and gos and I have thick course hair. Wash and gos become easier as your hair becomes trained. I add extra gel on my ends in cold weather and to avoid friction on a daily basis. I do not add anything to my hair in between because I add a lot of gel. I do sleep with wet hair, but I put it into a few loose buns with a few shower caps on and a scarf (I work odd shifts). I also avoid using oils and proteins because my hair hates it. I have no issues retaining length, and I redo my hair every 3-5 days. Trims are important too and I don't get fairy knots as long as I stay on schedule with my hair. love your videos!

My trimming schedule is every 8 weeks. Works great for me at keeping hair growing and thick to the ends

Love it! Thanks for saying that wash n Gos are a high maintenance style. That is indeed a fact for those of us kinky hair. But 30 minutes to redo mid week isn't horrible to me. I dabbled with a few wash n Gos last month using some of your advice on products and technique and was so shook at the results lol. My hair looked fantastic. When this fake winter feeling spring goes away I will get back on it. These tip Tuesdays are the best.

Another Great video. I've tried the Dickey method & YES it works! Anthony Dickey said some interesting about Type 4 hair & it made me think. U remember Jerry Curls? He said if you have Type 4 hair & refuse to wash your hair frequently if you're doing wash-n-go styling that's like having a Jerry Curl & refusing to use curl activator. When he said that for me it made sense.
@annecuthers57236 жыл бұрын
Erika Lee how often do you wash your hair on the dickey method?
@erikalee80586 жыл бұрын
Under the Dickey Method if you have Type 4 hair & you do wash-n-Go styling you can co-wash your hair daily up to twice a day (if you want), but do not let more than 2 & a half days go by w/o co-washing your hair. I washed my hair every 2 days using the Dickey method.
@annecuthers57236 жыл бұрын
Erika Lee not letting the hair dry out makes sense, I just don't think that method would fit my lifestyle
@erikalee80586 жыл бұрын
Do what works for your hair. The key is to keep it moisturized. However, if you do wash-n-go styling the key to that hair style is to co+wash often. Play around with it & see what you can do for your hair at a minimum to get the result you want. For example, maybe washing your hair twice a week.

Great tips! You are on it! I've noticed since I shampoo more often, once a week and deep condition. I've seen way more length retention. I also protective with wigs in between wearing my hair out. I do wash-n-gos maybe once a month, but most times a twist-out that I turn it into a puff.

I agree with you on these points, I too thought Anthony method was rubbish, then I began to do it and it worked out great, I know that many naturals talk about hydra fatigue, we need that moisture, I don't get tangles and stuff like that maybe because my hair is fine/medium and medium density, I finally found a combo for my wash and ??? style, so right now I wear this style from Friday to Monday, then do my wash session, braid my hair until Friday, so far this is working pretty darn well, again I don't work in corporate America though. Again great video! Tfs as always

michelle morris what products do you use?
@michellemorris45306 жыл бұрын
Anne Cuthers I am using the Jane Carter curls to go weightless leave-in conditioner, paired with the Mielle Organics Honey &Ginger styling gel, this gives me the exact amount of hold for my three days. On day 2 (Sunday ) I like my hair to look a little polished so I refresh with a little liquid leave-in like JC or a small amount of water mist, then do the Naptural85 high stretch (learned this from one of ALOVE4ME videos) which help stretch the hair some as I get dressed, and that is it.

FINALLY A TRUE 4C natural that has the same hair concerns and issues as mine! You have given me hope for retaining length and I have been a natural for waaaay tooo many years to not see any length. I have done a lot of the things you have mentioned, however some points you broke down helped me to understand that I should never have stopped or changed that routine. I have not been brave enough to wear a wash and go due to not fully understanding how to maintain one. I do have to keep my hair wet like a jerry curl to retain moisture longer. Yeeees, there is a level of moisture that when slept on does cause my hair to tangle and break especially if laid on at that particular moisture level. I have been finding banding to be a good thing for my hair, too. Less time, only problem takes forever to dry this way. Thanks to your tips I will be sure to try diffusing, while banded, in order to keep from sleeping on wet hair. Plus, I will not view washing my hair every 3 days as a bad practice for my extremely tangly curls. WOW!!! I never would have thought 1 person on youtube would understand how to break down the high maintenance process to successfully retaining length on 4C hair!!! This video has truly been a blessing! You have empowered me to begin to love my 4C again and do the routine I knew to do, however did not see that routine as the right technique to loving my hair. Thank you for sharing your experience🤗🤗🤗 I look forward to more of your videos!

It does seem like the wash n go is the more “ideal” style but there are definitely strict rules to follow especially for the type 4 hair chicks out there. Conditioner stays in the hair for 3 days?!? What? You know what that makes sense tho. Every 2-3 days I AM spritzing/moisturizing my hair. Okay so after 3 days and you choose to co-wash would you go back to a wash n go or choose a different style? I think you just did something with this video for us type 4 chicks and wash n go’s! Thorough detangling is very important. Going off what you were saying about your crown area and locs...my crown area broke off so bad because I was strictly finger detangling. My hair locked up so bad at my roots in my crown area when I finally decided to thoroughly detangle for a protective style.

Depends on what I'm feeling. Oftentimes I go straight into another wash and go, but any style is up for grabs.

Very good tips. For my hair though, no matter the styles l do it is high maintenance and l have a looser curl pattern in other words l don't have tight coils and my hair is soft. My problem is dry scalp issues! I do things to reduce the dry scalp significantly but still can't get rid of it completely.
@nicolep45486 жыл бұрын
Nicole Allen I had the same issue...I went ole school and just started greasing my scalp....And not using sulfate shampoo..and for moisture I used aloe vera juice with water...btw I know a Nicole Allen...🤔
@doThatGWalk6 жыл бұрын
Nicole Allen yeah use sulfate free shampoos & rub conditioner to your scalp. Try rubbing oil onto it as well but I find dry scalps just tend to be extremely dry. It almost took a year for my scalp to heal & figure out why it was so dry.
@jennid20536 жыл бұрын
A few years ago I had the same dry scalp issue. I mixed aloe vera gel and an light oil together to make a scalp "serum". Its really light weight and shouldn't weigh down your looser curls. Get a super light oil like rosehip .The ratio is 2 part aloe vera gel to 1 part oil. So 2 Tbs aloe vera gel and 1 tsp - or 1/2 tsp if you want of the oil. Apply to scalp and massage it in as often as needed. Also make sure that the water you are using to wash your hair in isn't super warm. Very warm almost hot water can dry the scalp and facial skin out really bad.
@nicoleallen50496 жыл бұрын
I do appreciate all you people comments and suggestions. I know l did not mention what l did to reduce the dry scalp. Here is my Hair Care Regimen ; every Wash Day l just have to part my hair in sections and use the comb to gently scratch out the dry particles out of my hair because that is the only way the majority of flakes can come out of my hair before l wash it. After that is done, l part my hair in sections and subsections and use the Aloe Vera on my scalp and then on my hair itself saturating it. After that l put a plastic bag over my head for an hour or so to keep in moisture. After that l wash my hair with a moisturizing shampoo and then l put conditioner in my hair for another 15 mins and wash it out. When l am styling my hair l spray some Olive Oil on my scalp and on each of my parts and even spraying the same Oil throughout the week as needed. Truth be told, my hair will still be moisturized but certain areas of my scalp such as the middle of my hair going towards the back and especially the front of my hair the scalp would be dry like a chip and l made sure to focus more on these problem areas when l am using the Aloe Vera and using the Oil to spray my hair. I never had these problems, the problems started when l used to relax my hair. The hairdressers use to over process my hair , burning up my scalp all over especially at the front and at the middle of my head going towards the back! Those areas of my head got the worst hit! Now, l am natural for some years and still suffering as a result. Anyway these methods that you've all suggested l am going to try and see if I can get rid of the dry scalp totally because it's so annoying and l am not getting much length retention and naturally my hair was long! Currently, my hair is not very short though, l would classify it as short to medium length. However, this Hair Care Regimen l started in recent times about 3 months ago. Before this Hair Care Regimen l wasn't using the Aloe Vera on a consistent basis and it's just 3 months ago l started to incorporate a moisturizing shampoo in my regimen, started deep conditioning and using the Olive Oil Spray. Anyway l am gonna give my method sometime to work even more effectively before trying these methods that you all suggested.

Such useful tips! Thank you so much for the information! If you get the chance please go into drying options. I wng in the shower and obviously come out with soaking wet hair. My preferred method of drying is a 80-90ish % air dry then I’ll go in with my concentration attachment on my blow dryer to stretch my roots for some length. I love my results this way but mid week wngs do not allow for all that air drying time. I have a softhood attachment for my blow dryer that I use during the week but I feel like my coils get smooshed and shrunken using that method. I’m thinking of grabbing a diffuser attachment next time I’m in Sally’s but honestly don’t have the slightest clue as to how to diffuse my kinky hair. Any tips will be greatly appreciated! I love your videos!
