@HOBOTECH - hey man... one little tip/suggestion I felt I should share... Something I do quite often when a product has SCREWS where they’re less than convenient & I know I’ll need to remove them often... REPLACE THEM with a screw that has a KNOBBED END or an end that features BOTH a standard driver pattern, AND a swivel D-Ring (commonly seen in photography applications). Since that door isn’t exactly concealing a large “security risk” and even with children present I highly doubt their “curiosity” will provoke them to undo both screws on such an intimidating machine, I see NO REASON to leave those screws in when you can swap them for a “tool free” alternative. For anyone besides _Professor Hobooooo_ reading this, if you’re unclear on HOW to find an alternative fastener that has the same dimensions & thread pattern.... Just take one out, measure it’s thread length & diameter, and take note of the thread TYPE. Search for either a “male threaded knob” or “screw with knob head” and etc... you get the point. As long as the LENGTH/DIAMETER/TYPE of thread is a match (AND there’s enough clearance on your equipment to allow for the knob to function properly) you can’t go wrong. The manufacturer should sincerely consider the fact that PORTABLE GENERATORS are not only for “ideal” overlanding applications and ARE COMMONLY DEPLOYED IN EMERGENCY (UNIDEAL) SITUATIONS such as winter power outages and active rain/snow storms!!! Fumbling with SCREWS & SCREWDRIVERS during on-the-fly oil changes, maintenance, or troubleshooting during already tumultuous conditions?? NO THANKS.. The solution I’m offering here SHOULD BECOME STANDARD EQUIPMENT or should be added into the package so the end-user can choose which they prefer. They created a fine piece of machinery that MOST will want to trade in their gasoline generators for which PROMOTES long term usage where impromptu maintenance & troubleshooting WILL ARISE. Small details like this one are what separate the Hyundai’s from the Bentley’s... I think HOBO should provide this feedback and let’s see if they send out 2 upgraded screw replacements to anyone who already purchased this. Ya never know!

Great Job Tom! One can also add: - that you can generally store propane indefinatly - propane is much better for the engine longevity because it burns a lot cleaner and leaves less soot - and you dont have to worry about the carb getting gunked up from leaving fuel in there unleaded has a shelf life, would need fuel stabalizer, and most unleaded is mixed with ethanol which is not good for the longevity of some of the internal components.
@arts8302
@arts8302 3 жыл бұрын
Exactly where in the world do you find most unleaded gas to be usable only by flex fuel vehicles? What you want is an ethanol generator that produces heat obviously you can use in other words it interfaces with your existing hot water heater. During prohibition we were allowed to buy 200 lb of fruit to operate the generators or just drink

Indeed, the clean burn is probably why the oil change recommendation is greater than for gas generators.
@rogerdayton
@rogerdayton 3 жыл бұрын
The sound level rating for generators is usually measured at 7 meters. That's why you found it to be louder than what they advertise. If you want to run a 5K BTU window AC. Get the Frigidaire FFRE053WAE (410 watts) and a gas generator that will give you the longest runtime per gallon on ECO mode capable of powering it. That will give you the lowest fuel cost to run one.

@@Shane-Singleton I just experienced this during the DEEP FREEZE 2021 here in Coastal Texas. I had one 5 gallon gas can from 12 months prior, and although treated with Seafoam, it was still regular unleaded 87 oct with 5% Ethanol. My other gas cans had Ethanol-Free 92 Octane, and when I fulled my generator with the junk gasoline, there was a marked difference in how the generator ran and even how it sounded. When that tank was near empty, I re-filled with Ethanol-Free and was back to normal. And, I just bought a Dual-Fuel generator and more propane.

@@GalvestonCountyMike I'm up in the Dallas area here. Ever since we got a local Buc-Eee's that has ethanol free gasoline we use that for all of our small engines and keep ~15 gallons of it in rotation due to its stability. We had similar issues in the past as you had. Even in fuel that was treated with Sta-Bil. It just wouldn't last.

@@Shane-Singleton Shane. I'm in Galveston County. The temp got to 16 degrees F for a few hours. I put 45 hours on my vintage Generac 8KW generator. Fortunately had a couple of weeks prior, changed filter and put fresh batch of Mobil1 10w30 oil in crank case. After 45 hours of run time from the freeze, the oil still looks great. We have a Buc-ee's here in Texas City, and I use their Ethanol-Free 92 octane fuel. Amazing stuff!

After Hurricane Michael hit our area one of my neighbors couldn’t get his 5000 watt generator running so he put it out on the side of the road with all the other trash. I picked it up and then put a Propane/natural gas conversion kit on it a few months later. It runs like a champ on propane tanks. It’ll supplement my gasoline generator quite nicely. The propane generator starts a lot easier than my gasoline one does and it runs a lot smoother, too.

Sounds good! I don't care how efficient it is or what kind of fuel it uses. I just want one that I don't have to fill the tank twice a day, and will run all night to keep my A/C running during power outages (I like to sleep late). I just wish it was quieter. I live in a city, so I don't want my neighbors complaining about the noise at night.

Great review, perfect for operating a small air conditioner. Very nice for a cabin in a remote area, especially since they can be combined to double the power. As an SAE oil engineer, i would have used the original oil for twice as long, for a better engine break-in. A full synthetic oil will decrease fuel consumption by about 5 to 8 percent, but triples engine life, because it doesn't allow carbon to build up.

A good tip to run new generators, are to have the economy mode on, that way it don't Rev that much.. I have a older gen that have been with me for many years, and always starts on the second pull regardless how long it's been sitting.. But that one I have to adjust the carb to run on lower rpm when I did the break in period.. It ran for 2.5 hr, the last 30min on 500w load..

For those curious... I use my ALP to charge my battery bank (off grid solar) and a full (not exchange but taken and filled) 20lb propane tank on the ALP powering my 24v victron battery charger will put 402ah into my batteries which is just a bit over 10.5kwh. So if your looking for a cost analysis... It cost $11 to fill the 20lb propane tank... which privides 10.5kwh of energy... over a continuous runtime of 23 hours... with a load of ~700w / 5.86a.

Just a quick note for you the oil change interval on that generator is actually correct and here’s why since propane is a gas and it’s not a liquid feel like gasoline that produces carbon which is what pollutes the oil after running that generator for 40 hours if you pour some of the oil out it will look like it’s brand new I run propane in a vehicle and I change my oil every 10,000 miles and it looks much better than oil that’s come out of a vehicle with only 5000 miles it’s run on gasoline or diesel obviously so propane fueled generators can run much longer typically double the interval plus another 10 hours that you normally would change out oil in a gasoline generator.

I built a LPG powered Evaporate Air conditioner using a 3hp Honda 4 stroke motor to drive a water pump and scroll fan... We were living in the Australian desert, mining for opal for 10 years . I went through two motors in that time and it worked perfectly. It would burn about one of these 20lb bottles every 5 days at 8 hrs a day at about 12oo rpm. We couldn't live out there in the 45 to 50 Celsius summer temperatures without it. I was in the air-conditioning industry and put it together in a day and a half.. PS...we made a fortune and sold the claim...with the A/C. Gas is the go with many applications...

tbh, if this generator scavenges a bit of engine oil to be used for upper Cylinder Lubricant, I'd buy one, otherwise it'd have to be dual fuel to make sure it gets regular lubrication from the Gasoline. It will be interesting to see how long this lasts before breaking, if it isn't scavenging engine oil lubrication tbh. Great review, many thanks, and best wishes from Bob in Wales. 👍✨️✨️✨️

Only big problem with Gas Fuels like Propane, is the destructive effect in internal Combustion Engines is the lack of upper Cylinder Lubricant which is so bad, if used in Diesel engives, the injector pump would rapidly cough and Die. In edibles, it is why you need to frequently switch from Propane, back to Gasoline/Petrol, to get those important internals lubricated again. I think this is why Vehicle Sales of Propane have pretty much collapsed in retain, and there are very few Propane stations left, and it is relatively difficult to find them nowadays. 🤔👍

Absolutely with our inefficient gasoline that has to be atomized by our inefficient carbs you should change oil at 50hr intervals. But propane does not have to be atomized by the carb and also does not require tons of dirty additives to stabilize it. Therefore you will not necessarily need to maintenance nearly as often.

A few years ago a actually Tucson Arizona pawn shop had a Platinum I believe based jacuzzi heater which of course was radiant. They were selling it for almost nothing so argued that it could not be that type of catalytic heater LOL. It had never been used but was $1,000 item. During the 1970s gas was very expensive especially methane at some point so the plan was to use thin-film solar panels and weather stripping to get rid of all of the furnaces and replace with Platinum based Heating using the existing grid to deliver the hydrogen instead. There are lots of bad reasons that did not occur and if there are any good reasons besides the cost of fract methane being paid by the indigenous and island-based life on this planet mainly in terms of perception I don't know of them. Of course among its merits is its non electrical nature and the cost of platinum Heater fuel including fracked gas of course is the reason I mentioned that I suppose. If this generator is expensive please understand that produces far less heat using far more propane then a catalytic heater would for less money especially if the catalytic heater is engineer to bank the Heat and operate 24/7 by for example heating water in a tank and then using floor heat coils. In San Francisco and other places marijuana was produced using generator power off and natural gas with both silencers and of course intrinsic to their nature water not air Cooling. Because the lamps were inefficient especially in San Francisco the free heat did not have much use. maybe that's why the spa culture developed however

This is the perfect CPAP backup generator. Propane can be stored forever. Plenty of power to recharge my Jackery seven times. Each Jackery 440 recharge = 2 days of CPAP. Giving this some serious thought. If it had 2,000 watts to run the microwave or instant pot it would be perfect at $500. But it can easily run a crockpot while recharging the Jackery.... The Professor has me thinking.

@@HOBOTECH Thanks Tom. Just poured you a few cups on buymeacoffee. Really appreciate your Jackery 300 (and mnay other) reviews. As you can imagine, with all the power outages lately with something 85% of the U.S. covered in snow, having a solid UPS has been a huge peace of mind for a chronic CPAP user. Used the Jackery 440 for over a year and the 300 for about a month. Both solid units but I like the 300 better for the size and the 77 watts in recharge vs 65 on the 440. As far as the timing out for using less than 10 watts for 12 hours, that only applies if not receiving shore power (or presumably solar power). You probably said that, but it makes the time out not big deal to me since I never get 12 hours sleep, and surely would not during a power outage. Anyway, thanks again at 85K subscribers and growing !

Thanks for the review. I want something that will be primarily a backup to my battery portable power stations, for extended non-sunny days. Because it is propane, it has the advantage of being very clean and as well as propane having a very long shelf life. That all alone is enough for me to ignore the noise level. It won't be a primary or run for long periods. You made my decision to purchase!

well. first ..the BIG reason to buy this is to use a small a/c why didnt you test with a/c ???? I LOVE the European design and the colors. very cool. I bought the BAJA 700-900 watt propane (Amazon) $399. it will NOT carry the a/c ....almost but trips off. I suspect this has same motor and it will also trip off. I am hoping I can use the Baja (used to be sold as a Ryobi) maybe Sportsman ?? will be able to charge EB24 or AC200 while I use a/c. I had a yAMAHA 1000 but Hurricame IRMA 2017 in Caribbean took it from me (along with my home and EVERYTHING I (used to ) own. all gone including my dogs. ya ...at 68 I am starting over...lifed can bde cruel HAPPY HOLIDAYS ! Isn't that a gasoline only generator? If so, I think you are missing the whole point of this one: propane can be stroed much longer without going bad. From my own plans on how to ride out the occaisional power out age or even a long-term regional one, the biggest challenge is how to have the fuel you will need either directly on-hand or easily obtainable when EVERYONE ELSE is in the same boat. Having a propane powered device gives you the option of doing less frequent fuel tank rotations than you do with a gas-only model.

@@johnmathias4871 yeah I understand, I was just saying that I love my little gas powered one, and at $400 it's a great deal, but also a great machine. Propane would be good to have as well as some others, because in an emergency it's a good idea to have several baskets filled with eggs! Lol!

Often they won't include oil because the need varies by climate and season. Don't worry about the screwdriver, you already have one and it's probably a lot better quality than what they would sell you. I wish you'd checked the engine brand for an idea about reliability, ie. is it a Harbor Freight clone or a genuine Honda?

checkout the difference between oil changes on internal combustion engines using traditional "gasoline" versus propane. I used to have a propane powered toyota pickup truck, after 5k miles the oil still looked like honey, just a much cleaner burning fuel and leaves less carbon deposits that end up in the oil. Might be part of why oil isn't included. Love the videos, thank you!
