This game is from the same creator as Lily’s Well, and similarly to Lilly’s Well, the many horrible ways to die in this game are very entertaining, but it’s the storytelling that really impresses. Even the stories of the ancillary characters in this game are very well told and the main story (particularly for the second ending is remarkably powerful and original). I really love this dev’s stuff.

I was really expecting the second ending to have him die at the end, but the fact that the second ending was more of a "true" or final ending made it so much better. Even with Mitch beating Jackie up, it was like he was releasing all the anger he harbored for her, then parted by saying he wished she could have seen her graduation, meaning she did mean something to him. Just not as a lover. It's so bittersweet and I honestly love this entire game, from the more humorous deaths and dialogue to how by the end of it all, Mitch wasn't even scared, just more "here we go again".

I love how there are lots of intentional spelling mistakes in the MSN Messenger chat logs. Makes it feel much more like a real chat conversation. Small touches like that transform a good game into a great game.

I love the detailed character sprites. What was insane was how much thought went into Jackie's design. A manifestation of how she died, being torn up by a hunk of metal. Her legs are a chaotic mishmash of metal parts, and her arms are beartraps, potentially symbolizing how her desire to be with Mitch destroyed their friendship. The flower over her right eye continues the metallic motif while also being a strong visual detail. The guy who made this needs to make more stuff because it's always a visual and narrative treat

This one was really... realistic, in its darkness. Someone like that can't ever conceive the idea that they're being selfish and venomous; they only ever think of themselves, and blame you for feeling any different than they do. The "You should have fake dated me" was very telling. And that it was revealed she put up all the obstacles expressly so Mitch wouldn't find his body in time... It's no wonder he lost his temper at the end. Even if they don't think so, the pain people like that cause is very real. I can't blame Mitch for losing his temper at a corpse. But that he expressed he wished she got to graduate... she never stopped being a self absorbed child. But Mitch became an adult for moving on in spite of all that pain.

I realized at the very end that probably this is the last time I ever watch this video. What you point out about the character Jackie is accurate; unfortunately, I only know because my mother was similarly toxic like Jackie. She allowed and took part in the abuse I and my brother went through at the hands of our stepfather. Quite frankly, her reaction to especially me cutting her off reeks of the selfishness Jackie had. When Jackie said the fake apology of outing Mitch, I broke down on the inside because of similar apologies my mother made via letters and e-mails. She never understood, like Jackie, what happened was not a simple mistake. My mother literally called allowing a man to physically and verbally beat down her children “a mistake”.

Between this and Lily's Well, I'd say the dev knows a thing or two about writing horrible POS characters while still making them understandable, if not sympathetic. Papa and Jackie likely didn't see or recognize themselves as malicious, regardless of the hurt they caused others, and I think that sadly tracks for most abusers. We're all the heroes of our own minds, but when we fail to take others into account, we can get into some real fucked up shit.

Jackie comes off as too pathetic and pitiable to hate that I just end up feeling sorry for her, partially because she seems to just accept Mitch beating the crap out of her and doesn’t seem complain about it when she’s seemingly helpless. Idk, I feel bad for feeling a bit more bad about her than how much I feel bad for Mitch. If that makes sense.

@@CybrThief I get where you're coming from, Mitch rejecting Jackie then saying that he wanted to keep being friends felt extremely callous. Her feelings clearly went deep, that's not the sort of thing that you can just shrug off with "aw shucks, guess we can keep hanging out like we always have." It's the sort of wound that needs distance and time to heal. If Jackie and Mitch had agreed to seperate for a while, everything else might have been avoided.

the whole plot only works and is impactful because the author paints the world as inhumane and hostile towards Mitch because of his sexuality, which is not an abstraction but a misrepresentation

These games have such great stories to tell, a great art style and the unique death screens make trial and error enjoyable, which is something I've only ever seen with the Henry Stickman games. Jackie's "typical teenager"-ness was more....Terminal, however. When reality got to be too much, off to fight the windmill giants she went, how people she's supposed to care about were effected be damned. Mitch was starting to get that if it's reality, TS if it gets to be too much, at least. Seriously, people like Jackie are only safe to get close to when things are carefree and troubles nonexistent....When you find yourself in very dark, dire times that you can't get through on your own, well, their intentions will be blameless but they'll probably be the rope that hangs you...

Honestly, Mitch and Jackie seem to have near identical personalities, in my opinion. Both fail to show the slightest bit of sympathy towards the pain and suffering of their "friend", while insisting they did absolutely nothing wrong and that it's all the other one's fault. Mitch has shown a great deal of bitterness and resentment towards Jackie and the rest of the world, and he clearly has no interest in making peace with this hatred. If you ask me, Mitch probably will end up returning to the library someday.

Uh, so instead of waiting 60 min to get a 15 min ride home (and avoid the slog in the freezing weather) he's going to walk back on foot. A trek which seems to be something in the area of 90 minutes on foot, one-way. Mitch is not good at math, basic problem solving skills, or accurately judging an individual's character. What he *is* good at, apparently, is knocking down and beating the everloving bejezus out of a hideously mangled, heartbroken, and sad little girl. Yeah, gonna have to *hard* pass on referring to this character as a "hero."
