Fear The Spotlight: Amy's Story - Beware The Woman of Black Waters in a Séance Survival Horror Game!

This is a spin-off of the original Fear The Spotlight game I covered a year ago. The original game followed Vivian and this story follows Amy during her version of the timeline (kinda like the Leon and Claire stories in RE2). The first 9 minutes are similar to the original, but after that it's very different to Vivian's story and gives more closure to the overall story. Both stories are included in the new version of the game that has been released under the new Blumhouse Games publishing label.

Now the story has really become broader and due to this more interesting, fuller and more elaborate. But it's still a pity that this is essentially a walking simulator.

@@endrgar Hi! Yeah, it does a great job of fleshing out the story. I don't really see how this could be classed as a walking simulator though (aside from the initial pre-seance intro section). It's a survival horror game, complete with lots of puzzles and monster evasion.

​@@AlphaBetaGamer In the game, you walk from point A to point B, find notes and items to solve puzzles, hide and run from monsters - it's literally a third-person walking simulator. There are no elements of combat, survival, or any way to fight back other than scripts. I don't see a single element of survival here.

@@endrgar Ah, no worries, I see the confusion. Combat isn't what makes a survial horror game, it's the vulnerability of the player. In fact the whole point of survival horror is that the combat is de-emphasized (otherwise they'd just be action games). "Survival horror refers to a subgenre of survival video games that include horror game elements. The player character is vulnerable and under-armed, which puts emphasis on puzzle-solving and evasion, rather than the player taking an offensive strategy." Examples of survival horror with no combat include 3D Monster Maze (one of the earliest ever survival horror games), the Amnesia series and Silent Hill: Shattered Memories. I know a lot of survival horror games include combat but it's not a prerequisite.

I like that they included Amy's side of the story and didn't sell them separately like other people would nowadays and the enhanced models and their expressiveness.

The stylization and voice acting are quite phenomenal! The PS1 jitter looks great too heh, nailed the effect as well as the atmosphere.

wow, such a nice and wholesome little horror game. Just the right amount of puzzles and a bit of scares. Cute ending too. The fact they made both sides of their experiences is very cool! Another thing i like is that the "romance" between the two is very spontaneous, just two teenagers discovering themselves, nothing too dramatic or emotional.

Wow I love this. Even with the old style graphics, so much emotion and atmosphere was conveyed. The voice acting was subtle but good. And the ending was so cute. I was wondering what the covered up scandal was, and found out this is supposedly a "sequel." Time to watch the other perspective.

I really dislike romance plots but the game does have a solid narrative to make up for it. And can we just appreciate the Silent Hill Easter Egg at the end? "mysterious fog hits Toluca Lake", that's some nice detail there

What year is this game set in? Vivian has a smart phone but they have floppy discs for the computers?

Good point! I guess it could be set around 2007 (the iPhone launch date), but I'd say the objects in the house are recreations from Amy's early childhood, which would be at least 7 years prior to that (2000). Maybe there would still be floppies lying around then?

I know these comment are a little old, but idc. The year the game takes place in is actually 2013. I believe in Vivian’s perspective, it is mentioned that the school finished renovations a year before the game takes place, as one of the characters (I think Vivian) said that they finished renovations last year. The newspaper said that the renovation finished in 2012, so the game takes place in 2013 👍🏻👍🏻
