The Committee would not know a thing. All they can see is the number 5 is bigger than 4.5 and say "yes, we need it". If an aircraft company startsd using the term 5.5 gen in its marketing, they would say we need that. The committee is not the right type of people to make decisions on national defence and strategic planning other than from the budget perspective perhaps.

The eyes are on two fighter jets - one 5th , one 6th Gen . Su75 and AMCA, having the same projected timeline. The Su75 might come into service as early as 2030 the AMCA before 2035. Reason : Su75 already has its engine core - AL51 and it would only be tuned for single engine platform operations. AMCA - no engine yet, GEF414 would be for prototype flights and first 5.5 Gen batch - but not the actual AMCA . The fighter production rate in India is in infancy and need to be upscaled . There is a giant backlog - Tejas Mk1A and Mk2 , using GE origin engines. Hence the type of technology that is to be inside the AMCA would require a powerful advanced generation new engine as well . Engine of the Tejas Mk2 cannot go and fly the AMCA beyond prototype flight testing . There would be huge drawbacks like the initial batch of Su57 and J20s . At the timeline in which AMCA is being projected to be in service - such drawbacks would be unacceptable. Su75 is being claimed to be radar invisible , it has been priced for modular configuration - there are elements of full technology transfer and make in India facilities and export rights if committed. There is the need of two advanced generation fighters in air force - single engine and double engine with both of its development and production eco systems in India . The MMRCA project concluded at 36 Rafales , that's it - that's the stop gap before new indigenous 5th Gen platforms. The MRFA is now aimed at only 5th Gen platforms so we are eyeing either the Rafale F5, F35 or the Su75. Since USA link politics to its business , it cannot be trusted - so F35 is already out. Rafale F5 is still not operational. Hence whatever we move ahead with in our cart at the moment Rafale F5, Su75 and our AMCA Mk1 - nothing is coming before the 2030 into service . Can we fight rival 5th Gen fighters with 36 Rafale ? Yes we can , in defensive war if there is a steady supply of the low profile Tejas Mk1A . Rafale uses active stealth and possible radar cancellation technology - which if network linked to low profile fighters , would actually be fielding a huge grouping of 5th Generation formation going into offensive or the defensive . Without the Tejas Mk1A , though, we are purely at defensive . India has huge geographical boundaries and under the radar flights are not easy for ' just in construction , humungous 5th Generation rival platforms' 😉 So chill, main rivals in the subcontinent still is at F16 , J10, J15 and J20.

The biggest problem is a lack of funding and testbeds. We haven't even started the R&D on the engines for the proper AMCA project (not the GEF414s). I am not a particularly optimistic person, but I would like to see Marut->Tejas->MWF(using the old nomenclature just for contrast in name)->AMCA to be more streamlined and quick (relative term).

With the rupee trade there's a number of wins lining up for the Su-57M, as much as even I myself have been critical of it in years past. There's nowhere for Russia to really park rupees but reinvesting in India, on top of no forex spend for us. And the jet has finally matured with the AL51 and flat nozzle and rear radar blocker bringing it to significantly better all aspect stealth than any late fourth gen as many of the early criticisms put it at.

The options for iaf as a SHORT/MEDIUM term measure would be 1) take a leaf out of lessons of ukranian armed forces where ukranian armed forces with an minimal airforce are able to hold at bay 2nd largest airforce in the world -the Russian airforce by inducting lots of ground based air defence systems, india too should invest heavily in indigenous ground based air defence systems. 2) induct more force multipliers like awacs, aews like aerostat radars, air to air refuellers, electronic warfare systems, C4ISRs to allow our force to do "MORE WITH THE LESS". 3) try to speedily induct more indigenously developed / manufactured 4/ 4.5 generation aircrafts like tejas-mark-1a and instead of just additional 12 su-30mki induct atleast another 3 to 5 squadrons of su-30(preferably in super-sukhoi configuration). Atleast having an 4th /4.5 generation aircraft is better then having no aircraft at all for another decade.

While Make in India initiative undoubtedly is great but developing such technologies require lot of time due to complexities involved, it will certainly take time for India to deliver the results its anticipating and it will indeed take more time to fill the gap within IAF Fleet that has been created in all these years, Govt should really focus on procuring 5th gen fighter from Russia now its a high time and in parallel keep developing its AMCA project, but we first need to secure our borders national security should be of more priority then Make in India initiative at the moment due to growing threat from our neighbouring countries, first we should induct more fighter jets, strenghten our squadron fleet to counter any unpleasant scenarios from 2 front and in parallel keep developing our Make in India Project, this way everything will be progressing without having threat to lose anything. Chinese 5th gen program is also not mature enough but they have outnumbered our IAF fleet size, its going to be heavy if we are less in numbers its in best interest to procure for now to level up fleet size first.

Rafale : not technologically superior. In future also but slow in upgradation. Su 57: not matured enough or very slow in dev or production or very poor in avionics. Gripen, eurofighter,su 35,mig 35,f 21 da 18: junk or not future proof F35 : good 5th gen but very big headache. Have to face diplomatic,technology sinc headache. Kf 21 : block 2 in development. Advanced sensors, few 5th gen capabilities, more than enough to deal with j35. Join the program add our own sensors. May be useful in amca development, stop mrfa,tedbf.

Secondly, as long as the DRDO chief is around, forget about any fifth-generation imports ever happening. The man probably has a patent on saying, “We’ll develop it ourselves in the next 10 years.” By the time they’re done "developing," the rest of the world will have moved on to sixth or even seventh-generation tech, while the committee is still busy trying to prototype a dream!
