Michael, the admiration you have for Go Seigen is poetic

ABSOLUTELY!

Thank you so much for all these Alphago commentaries, Michael and Chris! It is such a privilege to have a ringside seat while a massive revolution in go theory -- maybe bigger than shinfuseki -- unfolds before our eyes.

What happends if 126 is played as pros would do on c17, but black plays 127 on a18? I couldn't find a way for white to avoid ko. But I am only a low dan amateur, so I consulted Leela, and it also became ko. What am I missing?

MicMacAngl I've only looked at it briefly, but how about a16? If B c18 next, then W b19.

Yes I think, that does the job just fine as long as white wins the semeai :) Thank you!

Respectfully, I could not disagree more. These are very enjoyable to watch just as much thanks to Chris's warm rapport as Michael's great commentary. Let's just enjoy content and not criticize a great person who is bringing us this great series for free.

One pro mentioned somewhere (I don't remember the source though) that he considers G5 (at 17:24) the most beautiful shape in the 50 games, considering that it creates 5 Keima. It's a pity that they don't elaborate on that, even though Michael doesn't seem to particularly like the end result for black.

The reason why AlphaGo went for the ko fight is because AlphaGo knew that it was going to win by several points. AlphaGo made sure that it will still win by only the minimum required, which is normally the safest way to play.

Plot twist: Alphago is actually Go Seigen
@roylangston43057 жыл бұрын
Let's see... End of 2014, Go Seigen dies; middle of 2015, in a matter of months, Alphago becomes far stronger than any previous program, and its designers, almost as shocked as the go world, can't explain exactly why. Coincidence? Or... life imitating art, and the spirit of Go Seigen inhabiting Alphago just as Sai inhabited a go board? ;^)

Plot twist: Go Sagan and Elvis are staging Alphago which doesn't actually exist. Both are currently living on the moon, making up the fake self play games. OK jokes over now.

First of all, I love those reviews. Second, I am going to give a negative but hopefully constructive feedback to Chris. This is only my opinion, and it may be very incorrect, of course. It seems to me that, often, Michael comments, and then Chris says something like "sure". Or Michael says something and then Chris essentially repeats, or restates it. My point is, if you are discussing with someone much above your level, and they say something you don't know, don't say "sure", say "I see!". And don't repeat what they say, as your own comment. Chris, don't be afraid to acknowledge Michael said something you had no idea about. You are far better Go player than me, but, we all know, Michael is far better than all of us. And, do venture your own comments, even if half of the time Michael will say "no, that is not correct". Don't be afraid to be original and be wrong half of the time. Like I said, you are better than me, so, at my level, and many others, your comments will still be very useful.

Mark Galeck I think Chris was just sometimes not really keeping up what Michael was getting at, so he might still be thinking it, or just want to find something to say instead of saying nothing. Chris is what we might call public communicator of this game, the person who tries to put things in simpler terms for weak players like me to understand, so that might be why he likes to repeat.

Thanks Mark for saying something I've also been feeling but didn't have the heart to say. Chris will sometimes even say "Of course", when it seems very unlikely that he really understands. I agree it would be much better to say "I see", or something similar. Good point also about making guesses and having it be fine to be wrong since the weaker players among us are likely to be thinking along similar lines and Chris can be very helpful to him as a foil.

Personally, I think Chris is much better than he sometimes comes across. When he says "sure" or "of course", to me it definitely feels like he understands why the move was correct (or incorrect). Whenever he does have an original point or question to make, it's always clever.
@AncalagonGo7 жыл бұрын
In my opinion, Chris has found the right balance with his comments to keep a good flow with Michael's review. Mark, "sure" is just another way of saying "I understood what you said". Don't assume that because you didn't understand something, Chris didn't understand it either.
@ConsciousBreaks7 жыл бұрын
I totally agree and I've been noticing this more lately than in the Master series. I would like Chris to ask more things like how he was wondering how deep W could jump in at the top right, or whether a move worked. Lately, it's been a *lot* more of the "sure", and what not. Let's not forget that Chris is a 3d amateur, meaning he's better than most players. Surely, he has valid and helpful (to us) questions to ask.

Love the reviews, but the Go Seigen thing is getting old.
