When I was in high school biology, we tested mouthwashes to see which killed germs better. We took mouth swabs, inoculate agar dishes, grew until there was plenty of growth, and then introduced various brands of mouthwash. Listerine came in last. Lavoris came in first. Listerine might kill germs, but not the ones in your mouth. This test was done in the 1967-68 school year.

The Problem with "effective" mouth wash is, it kills all bacteria, not just the bad kind. The saliva is the only exterior protection teeth have.

@@CosimaNonymouse You can use Xylitol instead, and it won't do that. There are Xylitol mints, gums, and other things that have it. It is also a natural sweetener, without the aftertaste, and toxicity. It is good in toothpast as well. Flour ide they put in, isn't the natural stuff from the ground, and doesn't do what they say it does.

@@Do-U-Know-me00 Yes! Our local Aldi has a huge bag (like 500 grams) ever now and again and I always grab one. Keep it very safe when you have pets tho, Xylitol is highly toxic to dogs and cats. Also, inter-dental toothbrushes. You'd think there's no space between your teeth? There is, trust me.

Wjem I worked as a cabinet maker, I learned the formaldehyde is a component of the glues holding fiberboard together and that it was released by the heat of sawing, sanding, etc. work with that "stuff" in a well-ventilated space, people.
@myfirstnamemylastname2994
@myfirstnamemylastname2994 3 ай бұрын
And don't buy a brand new mobile home or RV without installing some sort of ventilation system that works year round. The off-gassing of formaldehyde in those things is enough to make some asthmatics wheeze after just going to one RV trade show or a few hours let alone days months or years in a new mobile home. Even installing new kitchen cabinets or carpet throughout your house can be risky and so if you must do that try to do limited areas and at a time of year when you can keep the windows cracked for several months. Actually more than cracked. If you have a heat pump, you'll want to consult HVAC technicians about whether the air is recycled bringing the formaldehyde back in with it. I don't think formaldehyde is the only chemical that off gases from those items. Polyvinyl chloride puts off a gas too so that wonderful smell I recall from childhood swimming pool toys when they first came out of the package is also poison. This makes it likely that if you opened up new shower curtains and other plastic things all at once that your house would also have a toxic amount of the gases that are released by polyvinyl chloride or PVC that swimming pool toys and other Inflatables are made of. A waterbed mattress for example.

Hey you might want to do one on everyday items in the home that have been deadly to some people. For example refrigerators that trap children in them or water beds that have smothered people or everyday items that when dropped into a bathtub can electrocute people and so should not be left close enough to a tub while plugged in that if they were knocked off could end up in the water. (Of course, there have been many murders committed with those objects being accidentally on purpose dropped into the water.)

You might be interested in knowing where we get the vanilla scents of perfume and occasionally vanilla flavoring, especially in schnapps. Castoreum is a yellowish exudate from the castor sacs of mature beavers. Beavers use castoreum in combination with urine to scent-mark their territory. It comes from a place at the base of their tail that they use to coat their...well, coats. They rub it in their fur to aid in waterproofing. If you're hunting beavers, look...or smell, for vanilla and you'll be close to one of their dens.

The Blue Milk appeared in the 1906 book "The Jungle" by Upton Sinclair, which I read in high school. It is about an immigrant family from eastern Europe that move to Chicago, and encounter all the city's corruption, and the horrible working conditions in a meat butchering plant. The main character's daughter dies after drinking the Blue Milk. ~. "The Jungle" was influential in obtaining passage of the Pure Food and Drug Act.

Growing up in the country during 70s&80s with limited parental interference and no jarts, my brother and his friend's introduced me to bow roulette where we stood in a circle and shot an arrow with a razor edged hunting tip straight up in the air using a compound bow. Leaning backward was a punchable offense, and the game only ended when all players had shot twice. More than once, I heard the bzzzz of an arrow as it landed directly beside or behind me. And the fact that none of us would have ever fired a weapon into the air made it all the more infuriating to my father, who wore my brother and me out with his belt. Good times

invention* of high heels
@myfirstnamemylastname2994
@myfirstnamemylastname2994 3 ай бұрын
High heels are just the European equivalent of foot binding . People say that's over the top exaggeration and like Fanatics feminism or something. But in reality I have seen what a lifetime of high heel wearing will do to women's feet including crushing the toes and making the calf muscles so short that women who wore them in the 50s 60s and 70s were unable to stand on flat ground in their bare feet. Even when they needed walkers in nursing homes they had to wear high heeled bedroom slippers because otherwise they would not be able to walk at all period of course they also distort the lower back and cause back problems and I could go on and on. We've all been trained from childhood to think that women's feet look good in high heels and that the curve of their legs are more attractive with the calf muscle bulging and the ankle looking smaller because the calf muscles not being used at all and being pushed up. As a result wearing flat shoes AKA sensible shoes is a phrase that's commonly used to describe stodgy boring ugly unromantic unsexy unexciting women. Apparently actually caring about the function of your feet is unsexy to the max. So the profile of the foot in the high heel or even a wedge is virtually identical to foot binding just not quite as tight and you have to keep the shoe on to maintain the position. But the footprint that high heels make is just like foot binding and the profile is the same and there have been men's sexually obsessed with bound feet just as there are men who are sexually obsessed with high heels and the feet in them to the point that there have been a couple of serial killers who murdered women just to cut off their feet--- in their high heels of course!!

Cheese is the greatest! Solanine has killed people in the past from the inhalation of fumes alone. Potatoes should NEVER be kept anyplace without ventilation. I've used Superglue numerous times to seal cuts on my hands. And have kept it on me working in kitchens throughout my life. I use a product called "Liquid Band-aid". And super glue is a great alternative to that when you don't have any on-hand. From what I understand it's basically the same product. I can attest to the fact that it works just as good.

Treadmill slavery: Wasn't there a Black Mirror episode about that? There was also an episode of RadioLab that touched on the history of Resuci-Annie. Favorite cheese? Can't say I've ever met one I didn't like. But I've become intrigued by Blue Stilton, an especially odoriferous variety popular in parts of Britain. Without going into the backstory, it contains compounds reputedly conducive to dreaming when eaten before bedtime. My own experiments have been inconclusive; but until cheese is declared a Schedule 1 drug, they shall continue. Living alone, I don't - nor ever will - own a chain saw. But I've had two hip replacements, a procedure in which the head of the femur is removed & replaced with a titanium pin. Since each operation was completed in under an hour, I presume some sort of mechanized saw was employed for the removal. And given the miraculous results, I can enthusiastically declare that I'm all for it.

Eh. "Green" doesn't mean a potato's gone bad; it does mean it can be harmful, tho...in a poisonous sorta way. I must have an iron stomach, bc I've eaten potato with some green on them many times lol. Potatoes that are more than a little green, taste bitter &/or burn when you try to eat them are a big ol' mortality no-no. A little green can cause upset stomach, that sort of thing, unless the consumer has health concerns & such. Be careful, is the take away here. Also, I need potatoes in my diet, plus I grow them so I'll totally take those green ones you don't want 😉

Aside from Hugo Boss and magnetic tape, a whole plethora of things came from Nazi Germany... Fanta, Volkswagen, the U.S. Space Program (Werner Von Braun the designer of the Nazi V-Rockets also designed the Saturn V rocket.) As well as a whole host of other items.

I was just about to comment this myself. Yeah there’s a lot we have now a days that Nazi Germany had a hand in. Another good example is jet engines. When people say kraut space magic lovingly to things like the G11 rifle among other things. They aren’t kidding there’s a lot of things the German people has made over the years that seem impossible but are.

Candles also put Carbon Monoxide into the air. And using candles for long periods of time ( especially in a space that is not well-ventilated ) can cause serious respiratory problems and other issues. Also, I remember a time years ago when I used candles and also had an Ionic air purifier, and when I noticed candle wax on the metal blades of the purifier I stopped using candles ; especially because this made me wonder how much candle wax might have been inside of my lungs.

Haber: Nitrated fertilizers can be mixed with flammable liquids to make explosives: ammonium nitrate. Barber pole: Barbers acted as doctors traveling around. Bloodletting was a "cure" to adjust the ratio of the four essential "humours" in the body. It is believed that George Washington died as a result of medical bloodletting taken to excess. Kites: Fighting kites have been around for centuries. Often, ground glass was impregnated into the string to make it cut loose opponents' kites.

I wish lawn darts still existed. Today we coddle our kids so much, they have taken many of the pieces of equipment kids once enjoyed - things like monkey bars, high slides, etc. Now they play video games as their guts and butts spread. Freak accidents happen. Overreactions to freak accidents have softened our young to the point it is detrimental. Please forgive any typos, etc., as I am a ninety percent disabled veteran who is one the highest level paing patch available. Have a wonderful day!

I'm curious. Where does the formaldehyde come from in the candle? The paraffin wax, or the perfume? If the wax, all candles would do that. If the perfume, it would depend on what perfume. Re potatoes. The potato is a Solanaceous plant. Same family as tomato, eggplant, cape gooseberry, belladonna. If potatoes are exposed to light, they start to photosynthesis and turn green. In the process, producing hyoscine, scopolamine, and other atropine-like alkaloids. I do not understand the modern marketing of potatoes in mesh bags or clear plastic under bright lights. Promoting a situation causing photosynthesis. A little atropine is unlikely to kill, but might affect vision etc.
