The tip about clusters of fur opened my eyes. Never thought about it that way. It makes fur rendering more realistic regardles of style. Your videos are simple - in a way - but very dense with useful information. And fun to watch. Thank you.

YES! I thought you were gone forever! Your videos have inspired me to pick up drawing again (I’m 22). It was always something I’ve enjoyed doing growing up, but it just kinda vanished from my life at some point. You have no idea how happy it makes me feel, knowing that I’ve found something I love doing because of the process of doing it, not the end result. Thank you Alphonso, I am definitely buying your book soon. Your way of teaching is excellent, everything you say makes sense to me even though I’m nowhere near your skill level haha 😆 Edit: as to your book, would u recommend it for someone who is mainly interested in drawing with pencils/graphite? Obviously your books are titled „pen and ink” but I feel like it would still apply to graphite in majority of instances. Anyone else who bought the book (or not!), feel free to give me advice 😁
@Losckeychan5 жыл бұрын
Hey! For pencil and graphite there may be some techniques that will differ since pencil and graphite are blendable, however i think a good point is made in this review of Alphonso's work; kzbin.info/www/bejne/d3WUcotjrr2Dgpo To summarize the key point, whether you are working with pencil or pen, the foundation of line quality and varience is still the same. With pencil and other mediums like it, you just need to know what details you need to stress vs ones you don't and practicing your linework with the other principles will help with that. I hope this is useful! I wish I could say more on the topic but I'm more of an inker myself. Good luck!

How you explain by breaking down structures of forms makes drawing so much easier. This fur demo reminds me of Jazz. Plus, the jazz music in the video made me think of it too. When I first was learning how to play jazz, the thought of improvising seemed so hard like looking at the single strands of hair is intimidating to tackle too. But learning that there is a foundation to improvising, and drawing complex things like fur, is based on a foundation was a big help. The chords of the song, and the music is based on the major scale, like the complex fur is based on simple shapes that get more complex. Improvisation, like this example, has direction, clusters, and, like the values of light and shadow change, so does the dynamics of the music. And one decides when playing, what tones to use and it can change depending on how you feel and how you imagine the results can be seen and felt, just like a piece of art. And just like putting the bold strokes in the wrong spot, one can play some wrong notes. And practice makes perfect.

Alphonso, I want to thank you for your lessons on drawing fur. I drew the rhythm and lighting part always forgetting about the clusters, but now that you shed some light on it, I see it makes a big difference in thinking. You've helped me step up my game.

Mr Dunn, I have at least 1 of your pen-and-ink books and didn’t realize it until this vid. Currently I’m working mostly on maps for a fantacosm I’ve written. Could you please in some future vid describe best approaches to this subject - media, paper, etc? (I’ve found so far that artmarkers seem best - over a limited map width/height. Could you also make a vid on how best to render a pseudo-steel engraving look? Is it pencil over textured paper?

Alphonso, I wish your demo would have been of something recognizable as something with fur, for example if you'd quick sketched a dog and then worked on the back leg in a bit more detail. The reason is, that your final demo could be plant matter too. It doesn't necessarily read as fur without context.
@alphonsodunn5 жыл бұрын
It could be a tail, an ear, body and more. The concepts is whats most important then application later. I will do more concrete examples later on 🙂
