Hey Alphonso! I'm really enjoying your book. For the longest time I believed I just couldn't draw, but you have helped me to see how to break down the elements of both the subject of a drawing and the drawing itself. I never would have thought ballpoint doodles could be so satisfying, much less look so good! Thanks for everything Alphonso, you're a legend.

I've always been a graphite/pencil artist because I like having control over the various textures I can make with different strokes and pressures, didn't even realize that you can make all of that with a ballpoint pen since all I've ever been using since college are tech pens. Thanks a lot, immediately bought a pilot ballpoint pen after this.

This really made me happy, since I started exploring using ballpoint pens as my main medium years ago. Yet, I've never watched any tutorials and videos about it. And here I am, absolutely happy I managed to learn these things all by myself. It's so good to see someone doing the exact same thing I've been studying for years.

As always, this is my favourite pen tutorial channel. I think it would have been easier to keep up drawing along if the reference photo were up while you were drawing. Even just a thumbnail somewhere. My ballpoint snoots look nothing like snoots but I did get the hang of the light and heavy lines. Again, your channel is awesome and you're awesome.

Alphonso Dunn I should be thanking you, I was a skilled artist before but one of the pieces missing in my technique, was not bringing out the basic forms on the detailed area. I always did human anatomy and human head but the first video I came across of yours was how to draw a tree because I wanted to improve my landscapes. After watching your other videos, I learned how to do basic form in every part of my drawings.

I bought the book, because I figured that was the least I could do for all the free tutorials but your book is a great addition to your videos. I work in a call center and between calls or when I'm on waiting on hold on the phone I use your book to improve basic forms and practicing value with ink or graphite. Perhaps someday I'll show you my sketches. Thanks again Alphonso, my wife teases me about the book saying, I'm like a kid with his favorite Xmas gift. Lol

what i used to do is print out a pic i want to draw then write a letter in each area of darkness. so i would put H in highlight areas then D in dark areas and M in the mid range. so when doing portraits it would be a pic covered in letters down to the last detail. this was when i did more pencil but now just started doing ballpoint and gel as i love the effect.

Very nice 👍🏻 There's a problem you didn't address, as I do strokes with pen, the ink starts to build up on the tip and with a slight rotation of pen in next stroke it ruins the whole drawing thus I should clean the tip regularly. I didn't see it happening for you? Are my pens faulty?
@markshkurko6 жыл бұрын
Mosio Masoud He addressed this in one of his other videos, he has a piece of paper next to the drawing and always wipes the tip ink build up.

Hello Alphonso, I always enjoy your lessons here and have already learned a lot from you and very thankfull for that, but have a problem. I know a nose isnt a pine cone and dont know if I can ask you the following here, but I give it a try..... have a big problem with drawing a beautiful pine cone for a while and can not find a good example of this on the internet. Is it possible for you to give a good example on how to best draw a pine cone? Think many would be very happy and thankfull.
@alphonsodunn6 жыл бұрын
I will definitely add that to the list but for now I’d say to think of it like drawing an 3D oval shape then run a spiral grid across it like the one you see on a pineapple then fill in the shapes inside the diamonds. I know it may not be easy to visualize that

Thank you for your amazing tutorials. I bought both your books and had been learning a ton doing all the exercises and such. I'm just curious what size ball point pen do you use for shading normally (Large, medium or fine)? I didn't realize they came in different sizes till I went to buy one and am incredibly curious about the application of the different sizes. Or do you just use one size and call it a day? Does it matter, can you get equally thin lines with a super fat ball point compared to a super fine point, depending on pressure?
