Alpicool Portable Fridge/Freezer Test (will it freeze water?)

How long does it take for an Alpicool portable fridge/freezer take to freeze water? I tested a small (20 Liter) and a larger (45 Liter) Alpicool portable fridge/freezer. Both were set to -4F, their coldest setting and allowed to chill down the interior for several days before the test. Both were below freezing as evidenced by the ice cubes stored inside overnight remaining frozen.
The test begins with bottles of room temperature water being placed in the already cold freezers. I check on them after 12 hours, 24 hours, 34 hours and 48 hours. The larger Alpicool actually froze the water in 24 hours, although the smaller one took 48 hours to freeze most of its water.

Dear Nine Hundred Dollar Luxury Yacht, You are supercooling the purified water. Strike the bottles with a blunt object and you will see them instantly freeze before your eyes. It has to do with the way ice crystals need impurities or air bubbles to 'seed' the crystallization process. I urge you to look it up. It is a rather interesting phenomena.

I have Alpicool C15 and I just insulated the whole thing with 12mm yoga exercise foam and pumped the lid full of spray foam by drilling holes both sides as well as well as another 15mm of the foam on top the lid and I will test it for freezing and let you know how it goes, one more thing that I suspect with mine is that lid foam seal might not be making 100% air tight seal arround and if that is the case I might have to apply about 2mm silicon on top of black rubber or just buy 3mm thick foam self adhesive tape and stick on to fix that

Air is a better insulator, by filling the lid it will not be as well insulated.

It was already set to freezing.it doesn't show how long it take the fridge freezer to get to freezer timp.

After being unplugged for several weeks, it resumed with the previous settings when plugged in and turned on. I had manually turned it off before unplugging it, so I had to turn it on again, but it saved the previous temp setting. I just did another test by unplugging it while it was running, I waited a minute and plugged it back in. It powered up and began running with the same set temp. As far as I can tell, if your system shuts it down when your battery gets low, and restores power when enough charge is collected the next day, the cooler will restart itself and continue to use the previously set temp.

So.. on the larger cooler.. if setting the cooler as a freezer.. does the smaller compartment act as a refrigerator? Could it be used as a dual zone - even tho its not a true dual zone?

Personally I own the costway model from Amazon but both these and smittybilt Re made by the same manufacturer and yes. We use it as a dual zone e even though it says it cant be. But I will say if you put salad in the "fridge" part it will have ice crystals forming on it. So it's good for some things and not others.

Thats a good question. Useful info if planning your solar power system to run these. I will post a video with some test results after I have a few days of testing done. I just started the large one on 120VAC. It is at room temperature and set to -4F with eco mode turned off. It drew very little power when the compressor first started but built up to a peak of 70 watts after a few minutes. Six minutes in, its around 65 watts with the compressor going full blast trying to get the internal temp down to the -4F I set it to. Once it gets cold inside, the compressor will cycle on and off as needed, so the temp of the room where you have it will effect power use. Its about 80F here now. I will let it run for 24 hours and try to get a better idea of how much power it uses when cycling on and off. Then I will do the same with the little one and post a video when all the results are in. Thanks for the very relevant question.

The Carver has a bigger freezer kind of like this www.homedepot.com/p/Magic-Chef-3-0-cu-ft-Upright-Freezer-in-White-MCUF3W2/206205672 There is also a smaller refrigerator that was built-in. I have 600 watts of solar which was able to run both through an inverter during the test cruise last summer. If I can get away with starting this summer with the big alpicool packed with extra frozen food in addition to the regular freezer, that would be a good deal. I can always run the generator for a couple of hours to make up the difference if the solar can't keep up. I'll do some tests with the Alpicools plugged into the inverter before I leave for the summer so I'll know how well the solar does when running all of them before I decide whether to bring one or both of them. I had been using one of those solid state coolers so I could have a cool drink and a sandwich near the helm when I had to drive all day, but it actually used a lot of power. I got the small Alpicool to replace that. After seeing how well the little Alpicool maintained freezing temperatures while using less power, I got the big one to use as extra freezer space.
