Now we were ready to leave and had a big day ahead driving through the alps from Salzburg, Austria to Vaduz, Lichtenstein. I programmed in the car navigation system, not for the final destination but Innsbruck, Austria. This will ensure that we travel through the alps and not just on the edge. The scenery was needless to say breathtaking. We also had the treat of driving through the longest road tunnel in Austria. With a length of 13,972 meters (8.68 miles), or 15,537 meters (9.65 miles) including adjoining galleries, the Arlberg Road Tunnel is the longest road tunnel in Austria. It connects the Austrian provinces of Tyrol and Vorarlberg under the Mt. Arlberg.
This is probably a good place to talk a little about the car (an Audi A6 diesel) which came with tons of gadgets and information displays. It had the normal items such as engine temperature, rpms, speed, lights, and fuel level. Additionally, a map of route (including roads, location, and topographic). Also, the range which at the time was 1340 km (833 miles). I was getting over 44 miles per gallon. It also had time, outside temperature, speed limit (symbol, mark, and numerical), and lane departure warning. It also showed you when you would reach your destination, how far, how far to next turn (action). Now remember this was just the drivers display, the navigation and other controls also had displays which gave much more information. A voice announcement also aided with making turns and following the route.
When we approached Lichtenstein, we were experiencing light rain. This stayed with us most of our time in Lichtenstein. We found our hotel which had a great view of the castle. Later that day we would enjoy another great meal where I tried venison. We had a terrific dessert and were pleased that we have accomplished another great day in our travels.
We woke up and had a nice breakfast at the hotel. Still light rain in the area, but we accomplished a big goal yesterday of driving through the Austrian Alps. The plan for this morning is to travel from Vaduz, Lichtenstein to Schwangau, Germany. This time taking a different route through Switzerland and back into Germany.
