I love everything about it. The animation though is top tier. Something that has bugged me about the NSMB games as an animation buff/major is how Mario’s jump isn’t that iconic pose we see in the art work through the years. Here, it looks amazing. I love the smear frames when he’s running, his wind back when you change direction quickly, the 2D flourishes like his mouth and little other effects. It’s gorgeous.

@AtlastheProtogen I believe it's intentional, just like when he looks up -- his head snaps up immediately just like in SMW. He has different/separate sets of animation (running, jumping, crouching, etc.) and each set has fluid animation but they intentionally didn't add fluid transitions from one set of animation to another. I like it because it's very reminiscent of old school sprite animation.

Ok, I figured it out. Shigeru Miyamoto once said that the original Super Mario Bros. mushroom was heavily inspired by the "eat me" cake in Alice in Wonderland. The inspiration doesn't appear to stop there... rabbit holes and warp pipes, for example. By using the english word "wonder" even in the Japanese title, the developers have essentially announced a statement of intent to get back to the core values of the series- to create an endlessly surprising, whimsical world where the laws of reality are never quite clear, just like in Lewis Carroll's novel.

There's so much to say about this game: For starters: this is the 2D Mario game that Nintendo should have developed like 10 years ago (New Super Mario Bros 2 and Super Mario Bros U should have never existed). This feels fresh and fun, it looks psychedelic, it has a cool art-direction; in other words, this game feels like it really has inspiration behind it. It's also worth mentioning Mario's gestures, he feels like an actual character now. Maybe it was because of Nintendo's venture in cinema, maybe it was inspiration from Sonic Mania, Rayman Legends and DKC Tropical Freeze, but boy oh boy, this is the Mario game we've been waiting for so long without realizing it this is what we really wanted.

@raxxtv1998 Жыл бұрын
@@mariotheundyingTo be fair, there are multiple candidates for Super Mario Bros. 5. Yoshi’s Island is technically Super Mario World 2, and World was Super Mario Bros. 4 (even being called that in Japan), but to be fair it was radically different from the original games, and barely even started Mario. It was also a prequel, so really it should be considered Super Mario Bros. 0. Of course, with your line of reasoning, the sequels would also be SMB games. I think it’s more of a “Super Mario Land 3” situation, only named as such because they evolved out of the 2D Mario series, but should really be considered the start of their own series. Another candidate is Super Mario Land 2 (or as I like to call it, Super Mario Bros. 6 Golden Coins). I think this is a much more plausible candidate, as it features a very similar art style to World, and seems to build upon it (I haven’t played much of it though). But ultimately, it’s more of a spin-off of the SMB series, rather than being a true entry. The most obvious candidate is New Super Mario Bros. It was essentially made to be Mario 5. It took elements from all of the classic SMB games and brought them into a new era, and it standardized the SMB games, for better or for worse. Heck, it even has “Super Mario Bros.” in the name. The most interesting aspect to its candidacy, and the one that convinces me the most, is it’s art style. It looks like a 32 bit SMB game. It uses 2D sprites for around half of all objects and backgrounds. But the New Super Mario Bros. series is tired and unattractive. It’s much more satisfying to consider this new game, Super Mario Bros. Wonder as the true sequel to Super Mario Bros. 4. It’s the first game since that game to simply use the name “Super Mario Bros.”, and it actually innovates on the SMB series. It feels like an evolution in the same way that each succeeding classic SMB game was to the other. If you take a look back, each game was very different from the last in art style, control, and mechanics. The NSMB games were simply an amalgamation of all of those aspects, and weren’t true follow ups.
@Cubbie410 Жыл бұрын
@@raxxtv1998your last point is why I’m calling this Mario 5. Yes there are yoshi’s island games and the “New” series are their own entities, but it’s also the first game since Mario world aka Super Mario Bros 4, that has used the Super Mario Bros moniker without a title before it

I think one thing not enough people are talking about are how the level changing from the flower is phenomenal from a level design perspective. From what I’ve seen in the trailer, it looks like some of the flowers are skippable, which would instantly give replay value to a ton of levels. And who knows? Maybe one version is harder than the other? Maybe there are secret exits depending on if you choose to grab it or not? What if you ignore the wonder seed to try and experience the entire level in the weird and distorted form? This is literally a level design playground, and I’m all for it.

I'm okay with the name (as long as you realize they seem to be taking "Super Mario Bros." as the 2D subseries and that's why it's not "Super Mario Wonder" which flows better) but I'm not sure I'm sold on the logo. There's a small bit of empty space between the R in Wonder, and the word Bros. that feels like it needs filling. Also, the word Wonder doesn't look like it's as deep as the Super Mario Bros. letters are. The first problem would be solved and the second issue would be less noticeable if they made the word Wonder curve like a C (either upwards or downwards would work) rather than an S. Or they could've done the pre-Switch Japanese Pokemon thing (which Mario games are no stranger to doing, Odyssey does it with the O in Mario) and put the game's main gimmick (the Wonder Flower) as the O in Bros. to fill the empty space above the end of Wonder.

It looks like this game could have the highest concentration of entirely new monster species (not just variants of Goombas and Koopas) introduced in a single mainline game since Super Mario World. While I personally like the idea of a stable bestiary for the Mushroom Kingdom, it can't be denied that Mario's "Alice in Wonderland" tone works best when it's flinging crazy stuff at you around every corner, and it looks like they're working to bring that feeling back, which is much appreciated.

Looking forward to the game, but at the same time I'm disappointed by it. It looks fantastic, but it also looks like the same old thing again. Graphics still look 90% like the "New" titles to me, but I'm at least thankful for that 10% that's original and refreshing. Here's the thing: The original 2D series not only had different graphical styles game to game, but each game added new things that really expanded on the idea and made the gameplay feel fresh. For example, SMB 3 added flight and upper areas to explore in many levels, world maps, and mini games. SMW added Yoshi's which added something new to the gameplay, secret exits and levels, and ghost houses. Then you had SML 1&2 which were each very unique titles. The "New" series never really added anything truly new and exciting. They brought back some elements from SMB3 which was cool and very welcome, but that's about it. This game looks to be more or less another "New" Super Mario Bros. game. Maybe there's more to it, but from what we've seen so far it's just another 2D Mario game. Again, that's fine and all, but I wish they'd change things up a lot more like they used to.

The main difference in the art is that the characters are "cheating out" to the camera more than they used to, so you see their faces and their body language more. In some ways, it is a shame that this game looks like it allows player clipping without consequences. Part of the fun and challenge was working cooperatively to accomplish the necessary on screen tasks without interfering with or accidentally killing each other. Accidental deaths could be hilarious, on both sides. With so many lives and plentiful power ups, it never really mattered.

His t pose run and jump is similar to 3 and World and the jump pose with the hat lifting off his head is from World as well. It looks perfect.

I have zero problem admitting I didn't like it at first. But, it grew on me. I will most likely get it at release now. Now we need a Warioland game like this.

Mostly curious if it will support online multiplayer like Mario 3d World does.

I do find it interesting that there isn't a time limit for the game.

That 3/4 turn toward the screen gives it such an old school smb3/smw feel. This thing is so completely hype.

I can’t contain myself between Wonder, Luigi’s Mansion Dark Moon, the Pikmin ports/rereleases and the recently announced Fantasy Life! Mario RPG games and especially Thousand Year Door were just my favorites and started my love of RPGs and JRPGs. That’s the best Direct I’ve seen in a long time. And it reminded me that I bought the Pokémon DLC ages ago so that was cool.

I'm certain that they settled on this art style after experimenting with it in the spooky world on New Super Mario Bros U game. There were a few levels where it was like playing in a painting. They were the highlight of the game for me and it really looks like it's been carried over into this game.

The beginning Power up part where Mario gets the mushroom reminds me of that Nintendo Power magazine cover that was clay looking

Does anyone feel like the animation is very reminiscent of the Rayman Legends games?

3:54 it’s called cheating🥰. I love stage acting. I do musicals and stuff and it honestly warmed my heart when he even made a reference to it.

I saw a youtuber just jesss point out that the animation looks like the first issue if Nintendo power, especially at the height of Mario’s jump animation and now I can’t unsee it!!

It just looks delightful - bags of charm and colour. It reminds me of how I felt when I first played Donkey Kong Country or Yoshi's Island. There's so many visual references to older games, but without it feeling oppressively homeworky, like "only true fans will catch this five-second visual callback, can you spot all two hundred of them?" It feels more like: "let us take you by the hand and remind you how fun and surprising it felt to play games back then, but it's also going to feel fresh and modern." Also very nice of them to release it so close to my birthday, thanks Nintendo...

I can sum it for you. The characters FINALLY show emotion. That’s why this game feels ALIVE compared to the past installments.

3:30 I believe the term you're looking for here is "cheating out", which I know from my years of acting in community theater.

Do you think maybe, just MAYBE, Nintendo got some ideas or help from Illumination animators in this case? Because the amount of animation and facial expressions these characters have is astounding!
