It was one of the most magic nights in my life. Austin, 6th Street, Bobs Generic Blues bar. Haynes the bass and drummer. Four people in the place. Alan Haynes played like there were fifty million people there. Honest, deep, clean and driven. He was in a spell. All types of stories surrounded him. Some tragic, some mythical. All I can share is you are hearing and seeing the real deal. I have listened to players around the world. Alan is driven by something so more profound than blues, stardom or a wannabe Clapton God. There is something there so grounded that if you are not there with him - he will simply walk away. He demands that you be smart, schooled in the history of the blues and awake to what he is sharing with you. At that point - you have arrived at Led Belly, B.B., Stevie, Winter, Hendrix and on....... lean in - there is so much more to Haynes than some will ever realize.

protocalone I experienced something similar with Alan the first time I saw him. We were also on 6th street at Nunos for a Stevie Ray Vaughan fan club tour that weekend. Alan blew everyone away, and who else walked in to play a few songs ? Gary Clark Jr….walked up on the stage in the middle of a song Alan was doing, and Alan handed him the guitar …both never missed a beat. It was magical. I've seen Alan several times since and am always amazed at how crazy good he is…and how long he has been around….and just doesn't get the credit he deserves…but he really doesn't seem to care. He loves playing the small venues ...

No doubt about it - he is the real deal. First time I saw him was at Fitzgerald’s in 88 opening for Ezra Charles. Hooked ever since, went out the next day and bought his album. Same deal in Austin at my favorite hole wall bar Joe’s Generic Bar, that is now literally a hole in the wall on 6th street. He just turns it on and doesn’t stop. I believe he still plays one a month at the Big Easy down in Houston.

Here’s me walking along 6 Street by myself late at night about 8-9 years ago. And I’m exhausted. Heading back to The Driscoll to crash. Then this sound! It’s coming through the wall. Oh I’m too tired. I stop. I listen. I walk into the bar. There’s two guys on the little stage in the corner. Drums and bass. There’s this astounding deep groove filling the room with irresistible guitar chops. No guitar player in sight. A small knot of half dozen people crowded around near the bar. In the middle this guy. I sit in a dark corner and listen. I’m whipped. I close my eyes and drift closer to reverie than to sleep. Sublime blues going down. For a good while. I’m in the dark. I open my eyes. Right there in front of my face with a huge smile, just grinning me down from about 3 feet away, Alan Haines, playing full on. Wow. I have no idea how he knew I was completely lost in his world at that moment but...

Thanks for these Alan Haynes videos. Been missing him since the lockdown in 2020. We could see him every last Saturday of the month at the Big Easy in Houston. Hopefully he's coming back soon. Truly one of the greatest ever.
