@@martinneumeyer9282 Absolutely laughable to think the Soviet Union in 1945 would have played nice if America would have just went home. Russia has a tendency to annex land that isn't theirs sort of like how Germany did until American put a stop to that twice in the span of 30yrs. I guess you can conveniently forget all the British citizens that were bombed and killed. And who exactly started the bombings?
@henryluebberstedt78192 жыл бұрын
That's a convenient answer as well. During the two days of Operation Gomorah the RAF killed almost the same number of civilians as the Luftwaffe did in five years during the bombing of british targets. While the Luftwaffe was due the lack of long range heavy bombers not capable of large scale bombing the RAF formed a new weapon to do exactly this: The RAF Bomber Command. Their main goal was destroying civilian targets at night. Harris called it "dehousing" or "moral bombing". The USAAF went for industrial targets by day. At the end of 1943 the bombings were a fine running machinery. The RAF extended the bombings in 1944. After all bigger cities had been destroyed, they went for the smaller ones. At the end around 1000 German cities, towns and even villages had been bombed. The level of destruction was 60 - 90 % of the buildings. Some towns just had the bad luck to be on the "B-Target-List". Alternative targets just in case the bombers couldn't find the main target. Operation Razzle attempted to destroy the German grain crop by mass dropping incendiary tiles. Aprox. 600.000 German civilians died and over one million were disabled. Most of the German architectural heritage was lost. Did you ever wonder why the bombings by the Luftwaffe were no topic at the Nürnberg trials?
@rubenesparza24972 жыл бұрын
Nice story, the question remains: Who started the bombings?
@henryluebberstedt78192 жыл бұрын
@@rubenesparza2497 Whoever started this does not exonerate the actions of the Allies, foremost the British when it comes to bombing. The war against Nazi-Germany was the last righteous war with a clearly good and evil. "Who started it?" can not be the question which justifies every action of the "good" side. Especially not in the case of killing women, children and elder people. The allied also fought for freedom, human rights and democracy (at least in Europe). They knew their moral standards had to be higher than the inhuman system of the NS-system. Winston Churchill saw it very clearly that Arthur Harris had crossed that line. In his "Dehousing Paper" Harris didn't' went for industrial targets but for the workforce, their homes and families. The USAAF flew by daylight trying to hit industrial targets with higher precision, but at the end they also burned down whole towns. Thanks to the Americans and the British Nürnberg was not set up as an stand court but as an proper court which had to follow the rules of the US system of justice. Therefore they exclude the Luftwaffe bombings at the Nuremberg war crimes trial. It would have been an easy game for the defence to put the allied on the bench before the court. And Arthur Harris? He didn't made a political career after the war like the most of other generals or high ranked leaders. Harris was cold-cocked by Churchill and went into exile in South Africa. In 1949 area bombing of civilian targets were counted as war crimes by the Geneva convention. (one year later US-B-29s destroyed every major city in north Korea...)
