I put mother, now almost 84, on a ketogenic diet for several reasons which I will not discuss here during the COVID pandemics when I took her to us. (She had arthritis in her knees for decades) Then she returned to her place and decided against my advice that it is fine to eat sugar. A couple of weeks later she fell in her home and was unable to stand up. Sadly, I was in the mountains that time so it took 3 days to alarm the police who found her on the floor. She spend a month in the ER. After that, they realized that she had a paralysis in her leg - first they though she is unwilling to cooperate in doing the rehab but fortunately someone realized that it is actual paralysis in one of her feet. After two more moths I took her to us and immediately put her again on a ketogenic diet. After about a week (the transition was really hard and she almost could not come out of the bed) I realized there was no paralysis at all. About a year later, when she still was with us she again decided that eating apples and some sugary "foods" my wife left in the kitchen is "not that bad". That what she later confessed to me. A few days later she fell again and was not able to stand up. She broke her hand - which meant she could not walk due to her arhtritis. In the hospital they again reported that she is "unwilling" to do a rehab. I asked her about it and she told me she cannot move her leg. Again, after about a week of a ketogenic diet that was gone and she could have moved the leg again but she had to wait another moth for the hand to heal so that she could walk again. Now she again lives in her place, she gets nurses comming to her house every day. But every time some of her friends give her some sweet treat she starts falling again. It is very hard to convince her that she should be very strict with her diet. I am convinced this must be some neurodegenerative disorder like ALS but of course as long as there are no symptoms there is no way how she could be diagnosed. The doctors think it was spinal stenosis which spontaneusly resolved and dismiss the possibility that the ketogenic diet could have prevent further paralysis...

I just put together a new approach for my mom, nearly the same age. ACV , lemon juice, cinnamon and a tiny bit of honey in lukewarm water first thing in the morning. Calms the adrenals and reduces stress hormones. Than veggie juice with bonebroth collagen, zinc and 200 mg coQ10 . The collagen to give the body the building blocks, the co q10 the give energy to the heart and organs. During the day Vitamin B complex with minerals , all essential. Before dinner nattokinase , cleanse away calcium deposits, and after dinner Vitamine D3 1 000 IU with K2 mk7 200 IU with another 200 mg co q10 for blood thinning and heart health. If this sounds crazy , look up paleo powder ( I believe a dutch company) speciallized on ketogenic food supplements ( organ meats in tablett form ). Wish you well

Thanks for sharing your story. I already gave up to convince my mother (over 70) and some other friends to eat less carbs. I tried hard to explain what for fuel are carbs, proteins and fats...Hm, in reality the apple is the apple and has not much to do with carbs...because they see no sugar on it ! 😔 And it was not only my mother but also some other younger friends...What a pity!

There is a great Canadian documentary on google or KZbin called . Hope for MS. Your mothers symptoms sound more like MS . MS you can go into remission and flare again. Either way they both benefit from keto and carnivore diets in the documentary ALS ;MS ;Parkinson’s ;Dementia / Alzheimer’s are all CAUSED! by diet. They are not genetic . They are not idiopathic . The sugar spikes from carbohydrates and starches create a spike in glucose in your blood just like sugar at a micro vascular level it does damage to the vascular system. dementia starts 10 years before symptoms so it’s happening at a micro level undetected for years. . If someone still insists on a starch like potato then eat it last. Glucose blood meter studies have shown that if you eat your veg first then your protein and last your starch in what is a sugar … in that order you can reduce the glucose Spike by up to 30%!

Glp-1 stimulates TRPV1 via its neurolymphocrine axis. Insulin stimulates more TRPV1 that stresses out cells and mitochondria by forcing glucose into the cell independently of the blocked insulin receptor and putting too much calcium into mitochondria all leading to glucose and lipid oxidation in excess of the cell’s antioxidants and then mitochondrial damage and cell apoptosis. Therefore it is logical that the ketogenic diet without the carb/glucose stress is incredibly beneficial.

My sister has stabilized MS (no better, no worse) on a keto to carnivore diet in addition to infusions of Ocrevus. No one would know based on how she presents. It does seem that a ketogenic diet (fat burning) is far better for overal health than a "normal" diet (carb burning. Could it be that we are meant to use fat for energy most of the time but are also able to use carbohydrates during times when a fatty diet is unavailable, therefore avoiding starvtion and death?

I find this incredibly interesting. I have wondered if ketogenic diets could help this, like the diet has helped some other neurodegenerative disorders. I also wonder if he might benefit from a keto/carnivore diet. The mother on one of my patients has achieved complete remission from her MS with a carnivore diet. She is off of all meds.

I make the argument often when trying to convince people to try a proper diet, that even if you have a disease that a keto or carnivore diet can't fix, then you still should eat this way simply because of all the health benefits the diet provides. Doesn't it make sense to heal all your other issues so you only have to deal with one? How much better off will you be fighting that illness when the rest of your body is no longer sick from a bad diet? There is proof that people on a keto or carnivore diet do so much better when going through chemo than someone who continues to eat that horrible standard American diet. It makes no sense to me to not give the diet a try when you are sick. However, I know people who have reversible sicknesses such as T2D (a problem I fixed with diet) but they refuse to give up eating ultra-processed crap and high carbs. I have come to the conclusion that if you are too lazy to do your own diet research then you will rarely, if ever, try or stick to a better diet.

Pfff, not really. A change in diet (from carb-eating to Keto) involves many changes, and NOT purely & solely that the patients is now burning Ketones (like, the effects on the Microbiome). We don't even know the mechanisms of ALS disease, which means that you cannot link Keto burning in and of itself to improved symptoms. Now, burning Ketones (as opposed to carbs) reduces the generation of free radicals, but does damage to mitochondria necessarily lead to ALS? NOPE, so no mechanistic link between the two. You haven't isolated anything, so you can't conclude any links between the two.

Is there a reason why in principle those on a high fiber and high carbohydrate diet couldn't produce enough ketones via the colon's fermentation producing SCFAs to get a similar effect?
@saintwithatie11 ай бұрын
A couple of guesses: 1.) The amount / type of ketones generated that way aren't of a sufficient amount or the correct type. 2.) The effect results not just from the presence of ketones, but also the absence of carbs
@graybeard22211 ай бұрын
The metabolic ketosis caused by a ketogenic diet is the result of liver processing fatty acids during times of low blood glucose. The particular ketone produced is Beta-Hydroxybutyrate. Liver cells cannot convert the ketones for energy and release them into the bloodstream. It is the preferred energy source for most of the body's cells. I would expect any produced in the gut would be consumed by the intestinal epithelial cells as their preferred fuel and not pass through to the blood stream. I haven't heard anything about exogenous ketones having any effect on neurological conditions in people eating a standard high-carbohydrate diet. Brain cells do not use Fatty Acids for energy, but function well on Ketones. There is something about the metabolism of ketones that has more effect on brain cells than just energy. A ketogenic diet has been used to treat a kind of epilepsy in children. There are anecdotal reports of ketogenic diet treating Multiple Sclerosis. It may also have use treating other neurological conditions. This deserves further research.
@LTPottenger11 ай бұрын
Eating fiber does NOT increase SCFAs in the gut, for starters. You have more SCFAs in the gut on a low carb diet. Fiber can produce them but they don't make it into the body they get flushed.
@markiangooley11 ай бұрын
I am under the impression that the human colon isn’t very good at taking up anything via the cells lining it, apart from water. So those cells might be able to use some ketones produced via fermentation but not send on an appreciable quantity to the rest of the body. I mean, we’re not proper hindgut fermenters like gorillas.
@dmmcmah111 ай бұрын
No, because when you eat carbohydrate in high amounts insulin shuts down ketone production and drives fat into storage (assuming you are not a type 1 diabetic).
