This movie shows how life is. Good, bad and sometimes ugly. If we continue to believe we are only going to show others that life is not always so difficult. Thank you for showing this film.

We've had 7 Saint Bernards since 1987. We named our second one Barry. He was a GREAT dog. I saw this video a long time ago, but was unable to find it again until now. I cried during a good part of it. I'm 69 years old, and wherever I wind up after I die I want to be with my husband and ALL of our dogs. Our Barry sired 12 puppies, but the mom couldn't keep track of all of them. Thankfully the owners had a Golden Retriever who brought attention to the last pup on a cold October day. We had a choice of taking the money for the most expensive dog or one of the litter. We opted to take Cassie---the pup left to die. She had cancer at 5 and hip dysplasia so we had to put her down. One of her sisters lived to be 12. Barry was so dejected when she died that within a month we adopted Donald. Barry helped train him, BUT I'M SURE THAT DONALD HAD HIS HALO WHEN HE WAS BORN. Thanks for posting! I could go on longer but I'm tired and have too much to do today.

A beautiful film that shows the life of a Saint Bernard dog who lives in a monastery with a group of monks in Switzerland. Located on a traveler's route, the monastery is a place of support and help for people who get lost or have accidents during the snow period. On these occasions, Barry comes out to help them. The end of the film could be happier.

One of my all-time fave movies, & the true story is just so heartwarming & beautiful. I love ALL animals, & this story helped make St. Bernards my fave dog breed - until I met my 1st Chow Chow. And I named my 2nd Chow Chow "Barry". No need to guess who he was named after.

@@nairaoganessova6185 Oh, my dear! My heart goes out to you & your family! I lost all 3 of my Chows to cancer, as well - Rusty, Barry, & Tai Ji. Do you mind telling me your companions' names, so I can let mine know they have 2 new friends at the Rainbow Bridge to play with? Cancer seems to be prevalent in the breed, unfortunately. But they're such wonderful dogs, & their loyalty & affection makes them well worth knowing. We'll see our furry friends again, don't you worry. They're waiting for us, you know. God bless you, dear.

@@nairaoganessova6185 Mishka (so you had a little "Barry", too) & Lucy. Thanks so much for sharing. I'm notifying my boys right now to look for them. Rusty was my 1st Chow, so named because he was a small, rust-colored, rough Chow, & he's the one who sold me on the breed. In his old age, he went deaf, & the bone cancer took hold, so he became my beloved invalid, unable to perform his "guardian" tasks. I adopted my big, solid black smoothie, my Barry. He was SO beautiful! Rusty WAS still able to slowly get around, & he trained Barry in all his guard duties, as well as house-training, fetch, paw shakes, & such. I didn't have to do a thing. When Rusty was satisfied with Barry's education, he laid down one evening, told me he was so tired, & that he was ready to go. We went to the emergency vet that night, & Rusty went in peace. Barry learned his lessons well, & saved our home one night from 2 burglars, who never saw his huge, black shape on our back deck until it was too late. My husband heard a yell in the backyard, grabbed his gun, & ran out, just as the burglars scaled the fence at the end of our property, & disappeared into the woods. Barry had pulled one of them's pants off him, which my husband found in the yard, cell phone in the pocket. The police got the cell phone, & Barry got butcher's bones, & lots of hugs & kisses. He aged, & began to slow down, & lost weight. Trip to the vet found lung cancer. Hard for me, as my mom had just recently passed away from the same thing. I nursed my hero boy for a yr., & he improved somewhat. Ate better, & became more active. Went to give him his breakfast & meds one morning, & he didn't rouse to my call. He'd gone in his sleep. Waited a while, but I couldn't stand not having a Chow. For my birthday, my husband got me the most adorable bundle of blonde Bear Paw Chow puppy you ever saw. He was so much bigger than his litter mates, I named him "Tai Ji", which is Chinese for "big mountain". Chinese dog, Chinese name. He grew into a magnificent Chow, & his claim to fame was his distinguished bloodline; so I stood him at stud, & he got to meet all the pretty girl Chows. He was "da MAN"! Once again, age crept up, & so too did Tai Ji's food. He could barely keep anything down. Vet found stomach cancer. Only way I could get him to eat & get his meds was to hand-feed tiny morsels of sliced turkey, with his pill rolled up inside. He finally began to turn away from even that. It was time. I had all 3 cremated, & their urns & pictures stand on my bookshelves. I only have kitty-cats now, as my husband passed away, & I'm too ancient to properly care for a dog now. My temperamental pusses are a great comfort to me. I really apologize for running on & on; but I can tell you, dear, that getting another Chow wouldn't be REPLACING your Mishka & Lucy. You have love & affection to give, & there's some animal who'd love for you to give them to it. You grieve in your own way & time, & you'll know when you're ready. My love & prayers to you. God bless.

@@nairaoganessova6185 Naira, dear, it's so nice to share "critter" stories with someone like you, who really loves them. I can tell how much you loved your Chows by the way you write about them. The "C" is for Cynthia, but everyone calls me Cindy. Good guess! Tell your husband to let you get a hairless Rex cat, unless he's allergic to cat dander. They sort of look like naked chickens, but they're every bit "cat". You're absolutely right about Chows having cat attributes. In fact, that's an expected breed trait, & is evaluated at all dog shows. My Rusty came from a pet shop as a puppy. I saw that little teddy bear-looking face, & it was all over. He had to be mine. Barry & Tai Ji came from private breeders. I like doing that, because I sit with the puppies & play with them, & let the puppy choose ME. Instant bond. Little Barry went to sleep in my arms, & monster puppy Tai Ji sat down right in front of me, cocked his little head, & stuck the tip of his tongue out at me. Yes, he sucked me right in! When he was having fun with all his girlfriends, I always charged a stud fee, & some of the girls came from out-of-state. I wasn't able to keep up with all his offspring; but I'm sure the American Kennel Club (AKC) can track them, if they were registered. I know exactly what you mean about kids caring, or not, for pets. My stepson, who lived with his mom in a nearby town, talked my husband into getting him a hamster. Well, his mom wouldn't let him keep it at home, so you know where the little thing ended up. My stepson came every weekend, & played with little Corky, but my husband & I really came to love her. She'd come out of her habitat my husband made for her, sit in our laps, & eat ice cream. Have you EVER?! She was so sweet, but unfortunately, those little ones don't live long. She passed away when she was 4 yrs. old. We had a funeral, & my husband & stepson buried her in the yard. I know your Mishka HAD to be beautiful. Doesn't that smooth fur just flow? And cream Chows are simply stunning. I'm sure your Lucy looked positively regal. It's so hard to lose them so close together, I know. And it's still fresh for you. My dear, I AM so sorry. Thank you for your kind words about my husband. He loved animals as much as I do (couldn't have married someone who didn't), & I don't know which of us spoiled our pet companions more. One of our fun things to do together was arrange their birthday parties. We also enjoyed Christmas shopping for them. Yes, spoiled rotten! Your mother-in-law was right - old age isn't for the faint of heart. My 15-yr.-old cat, my oldest, named Tortuga, passed away just this past June. I do believe losing them gets harder, the older we get. Tortuga was a gray & black tortoiseshell, so I named her Tortuga, Spanish for "tortoise", because her father belonged to a Mexican family who live nearby. She was the only cat I've ever had who'd actually answer me when I called. One of the sweetest cats ever. So now I have 6 left. Buncha spoiled furballs! Well, I've rambled on again. Hope you're not too bored, dear. Thank you so much for sharing your stories with an old woman! Much love to you, my dear.

@@nairaoganessova6185 Hello, dear Naira! It's so nice to get your endearing messages. You must be a very caring, generous person. I AM sorry your poor husband is so allergic to cats, bless him. He can only admire them "from afar". I'm very fond of some of the animal rescue sites online, as well. I've seen the ones from Russia, as well as Ukraine, Croatia, & there's a lovely one from India, in which a rescue group goes about its city every day, feeding all the street cats, & rescuing sick & injured cats & dogs. I've seen one from Indonesia, too, & in a few of its episodes, the folks were out rescuing animals trapped by hardening lahar flows after one of Indonesia's volcanic eruptions. They were literally having to use hammers & chisels to chip dogs, cats, geese, chickens, & other small animals out of the concrete-like slurry. We can only imagine how difficult a situation like that is on the poor humans. I know you had your beloved Mishka & Lucy. Have you had other animal companions, as well? I'd love to hear about them, if you have, & I'm almost certain you must have. As I said, I'm ancient, & in my long lifetime, I've had hundreds of furry, feathery, scaly, slimy, & even chitinous (bugs) companions. I meant it when I said I love ALL animals. Got it honest, from my parents. They raised chickens, turkeys, geese, & of course, our home had its complement of dogs & cats. My best toddler memories are of our big, red & green rooster, who adopted me as his own. He followed me everywhere as I learned to walk, & if I sat down, he was in my lap. If I laid down, he perched on top of me. My other dear friend was a white Eskimo Spitz sled dog. My mother said she never worried about me when I was outside, because Fluffy watched over me like one of our mother hens. He protected me from all dangers, even gently pushing me back into our yard if I got too close to our little road. When it snowed, my dad rigged up a harness, & true to his nature, Fluffy would haul my little hiney around on my sled. I remember one snowy Christmas Eve (yes, I celebrate Christmas), my mom thought it would be fun to walk around our neighborhood, & admire all the Christmas lights in the snow. So my parents bundled up themselves & me, dad "hitched ol' Dobbin (Fluffy) to the sled", & off we went to one of my most cherished childhood memories. OK, enough reminiscing for now. Yes, my cats get along pretty well, for a bunch of divas living together in a small house. The 3 females are spayed, one male neutered, 2 intact. Those 2 boys were both feral rescues, by yours truly, & they let me hold them & pet them, but they WON'T let me get them into a carrier, without me losing an eye or an ear. They've never been to the vet; but fortunately, my vet is willing to work with me remotely, & all my cats are inside, anyway. No outside dangers for THIS spoiled crowd! There's 14-yr.-old Patches, intact male, solid black except for a tiny white patch on his chest, & one on his groin, looks like a black jaguar. Next, 13-yr.-old Freckles, intact male, mostly white but for scattered, gray tabby "freckles" over his body, & the largest set of testicles I've EVER seen on a domestic cat. Now for my neurotic, sociopathic Queen, Isabelle, a 5-yr.-old, huge black-&-white Tuxedo/cow cat, with a very affectionate nature towards me, & absolute disdain for her fellow kitties. Now here's 4-yr.-old Shadow, male, solid black like his stray cat mother, who brought her little "shadow" to our front porch as soon as his cloudy little blue eyes opened, & raised him there. My husband called me one morning, said, "Blackie's brought her tiny baby to the door!". 1st time I picked the little thing up, he SPIT at me. He was an only child, & when mom tired of him, we brought him in. Next up, Blackie's grandchild & Shadow's neice, Fuzzy, one yr. old, again solid black, looked like a fuzzy bottle brush when she showed up as a lonely kitten on my porch. Just COULDN'T leave the little thing to fend for herself alone, so in the shy baby came. Last but not least, Cathy, 8-mo.-old gray-&-white Tuxedo, & the true sweetheart of the bunch. Of course, everyone knows I'm the "crazy cat lady", so when Cathy showed up in some children's backyard down the road, they rubbed her with vanilla potpourri (?), named her Cathy, & brought her to me. She arrived just as my Tortuga was leaving me. What could I do? I think Cathy is my sweet Tortuga's "parting gift". So that's my little family, & we'll spend Christmas together. Thank you so much for thinking of me for the holiday. You are so kind. We'll be just jolly! We're in N. Carolina, & I'm hoping for a white Christmas. DO let me know about how you're doing, & tell me critter stories. I love hearing them, & I love hearing from you, dear Naira. Much love to you, & you're in my prayers daily - Cindy.

Interesting movie, in particular regarding the conflicts among the human characters; and some (but not all) of the depictions of avalanche snow and avalanches in progress are credible, too. But once again, bears are egregiously misrepresented. First of all, the bear at 1:07:26 is unambiguously an American Black Bear (Ursus americanus: observe the lack of a shoulder hump, the straight face, the long pointy ears, and the light brown nose). While it is true that bears still existed at that time in Switzerland (and a few still exist even today in Italy, which is the country just to the South of this mountain pass - though in Italy, much fewer are left than e.g. in Slovenia, Romania, Russia, and America) - those were and are European Brown Bears (Ursos arctos arctos). Then, neither a black bear (as depicted in the movie) nor a brown bear (as actually living near that area) would typically attack a human like that. Yes, attacks can happen under special circumstances, typically when the bear is surprised at close quarters, feels threatened, and sees no clear way to retreat, but even then attacks are rare. The scene in the movie, by contrast, does not show any motivation for an attack, and random attacks without a clear motivation are extremely rare. Why do bears so often have to stand in for the bad guys? It's not fair to feed such clichés over and over again. Don't get me wrong, i did enjoy the film all the same. But with less bear-bashing, it would be even better!

I'm sorry for Barry. Too many of use our faithful companions for our own egos, which the Master spotted in Martin almost right away. Our companions are their own selves, not our extensions. My roommate treats my cats as children, being unable to bear children himself (and being mentally unwell). I try to correct this by seeing the cats get as much freedom as possible, whereas the roommate tries to control their movements. Animals are themselves, not an extension of OURselves!
