I really appreciate the close-ups to the pieces. Really brings up the beauty of the details. This is a very beautiful set. I have a plastic Cooke set, and I agree that the knights are great. But this wooden set takes the cake.

Thanks a lot! You don't realize until you actually try to do close ups that it's tricky and for some reason hands always shake a little because you try to hold things as still as possible. I am glad you enjoyed the video!

Amazing chess pieces. Great board. I hope you become the premier chess set reviewer on KZbin. Since you are the pioneer reviewer, maybe looking at those mainstream reviewers of watches with their equipment, show format and camera equipment would be something.

Hi Alex, Thanks again for a detailed description of your latest chess pieces. You did a good job explaining the linear downward slope in the height of the different pieces. I purchased from the House of Staunton the Collector Series Luxury Chess Set (pieces only) with a 3.75" King. I opted for the blood rosewood and natural boxwood pieces. Like your Cooke series, I like the distinctive feature of the collector series with the open-mitered Bishop, and the Knight design, which is modeled after the noble steeds from the Greek Parthenon (Elgin Marbles). Keep up the good work, and I am looking forward to your next video.

Thank you Al. These wonderful pieces are almost exact repro's of Nathaniel Cooke's 1849 Staunton originals - aesthetics, relative proportions, detailing and so-on - albeit with the sole exception of the pawn's slightly over-wide collar (as you pointed out). The bishop's mitre in this design is deeply cleft, as in a real episcopal mitre, unlike the simple slit which was obviously all about saving on manufacturing costs (it was not a decision based on artistic appeal, that's for sure). Some of the knights one sees are absurdly crude by comparison with Cooke's, and for the same reasons. Long live the extremely beautiful Cooke knights, which are based on the horses depicted in the frieze of the Parthenon in Athens (now in the "Elgin Marbles" collection in the British Museum). I've seen them close up, and they send a shiver down one's spine - especially in view of the fact that they were sculpted by the Greek artist Phidias in the 5th Century BC - 2500 years ago.

One huge fault is the width of the head from above, the Cooke and the Morphy styles had way thinner profiles , like half the thickness of these knights.

Interesting! I've been wanting to get the Morphy Chess Set for a long time, specifically this one: www.houseofstaunton.com/the-1850-morphy-vintage-series-luxury-chess-pieces-4-4-king.html But, the prices of some of these sets preclude me from purchasing them on a whim, at least for the time being.

i bought these chessmen of ebony and boxwood back in july 2021 and after getting the set, i would come back look at the pieces almost every day for the first few days, and still do from time to time. Note: the knights have the body attached to the base via a steel threaded bar. The threaded bar is part of the base, and that goes into a threaded sleeve, which is part of the body.

Great chess set and very nice review ! What is your idea about lacquered pieces ? I have an option to buy a blood rosewood chess set lacquered or buff polished. What is your choice ? Thank you for your ideas.

Finding a good box that fits your pieces well I feel like is important, knowing your pieces are protected from being broken, scratched or lost.

Awesome review! But I didn't get weight of the set. Why is this important? Well, I brought from HOS (cheap grandmaster) set. In the description it should have been 1.3kg in the description but it's actually 0.95Kg, this made the pieces feel cheap. How close is this set to the median weight they show in the description? In think this is important because Chess Bazaar sets they can be off up to 10% but HOS was over 30% off
@AlSuChess
@AlSuChess 3 жыл бұрын
Wow, interesting! Tell you what, if I don't forget, I'll go home and weight this set and add the weights of individual pieces as well as the weight of the entire set and add it to the description.

Yeah the 4.5" cooke set from HoS was 2.3Kg and arrive 2.26Kg so was satisfied with that at least

Do you prefer this or the Walter Grimshaw SC set?
@AlSuChess
@AlSuChess 3 жыл бұрын
I think they are both quite nice and in a way somewhat similar, size and quality! I feel a lot of it has to do with what the expectations are initially. I didn't know what to expect out of the grimshaw set and therefore I was very pleasantly surprised. I already have somewhat of high expectations out of HOS so I was happy to see the set met those expections!

@AlSuChess Thanks so much for all your great videos. I got my "Grand Revivals: Nathaniel Cooke Series 1849 Ebony Chessmen King Height 3.625" from a popular chess maker in India. I saw you weighted your "Austrian Coffee House Chess Set - Royal Chess Mall - Antiqued Boxwood & Ebony - 4.1" King", Ebony is clearly heavier than the boxwood. But mine Ebony and Boxwood are weighted the same . Is there something to concern? I bough the Ebony set not Ebonized boxwood. I do not have your email, otherwise I could email you more details with photos. I would appreciate your helps very much! Thanks!!

Would love to hear your opinion on combining different color dark pieces with different kinds of chess boards. I've found that it's especially hard to make ebony/ebonized pieces to look good. For example ebony pieces don't work with ebony boards because they lack contrast with the dark squares (even though chessbazaar and some other sites routinely combine the two into a chess set). Finding the right shade of color on the chess board to go with the pitch black chess pieces makes a world of difference and is no easy task. On the other hand woods like golden rosewood and tasmanian blackwood look good on almost anything (I really like the HoS Preston set, tasmanian blackwood on green erable).
@AlSuChess
@AlSuChess 3 жыл бұрын
Oh I fully agree with you, some of it is subjective and some combinations just look better than others. Usually for that reason, picking a board is trickier for me than picking the pieces.

@@AlSuChess Yes, I have a darker board that I have never been happy with but I like the contrast of the black pieces with this board. Purchased because of your example.

Alex, years ago I had a gorgeous ebony and boxwood set with black leather bottoms, in a beautiful blue velvet box with separate satin-lined trays for the white and black pieces. I donated them in a fit of temporary insanity and have regretted it since. Any idea what they might have been? BTW your videos are great just as they are. And whatever camera/lens is being used, it looks awesome.

Thank you very much, I try to improve constantly but my experience and expertise sometimes don't quite align. Do you remember the size of the set, the shape of the knight and the king? Do you remember where you bought it initially?

@@AlSuChess There was no nameplate or marking anywhere on the box. The knights were exquisite without being gaudy. I bought it, along with a Drueke board, in the early 2000’s, from some online seller. Donating it was a mistake; won’t be doing that again, haha. Thank you for your time, Sir! Be well.
