Great video, thank you! If I'm not mistaken, I believe Chessnut AI uses Stockfish 13 and not the latest version. At least that is what the user manual says is the default engine. I would like to see more videos and specifically, ChessUp vs Chessnut. Thanks again!

I really enjoy your reviews and the fact that you don't leave out any detail. I hope that someday in the future you could review tournament sized e-boards. For example the millennium Supreme Tournament 55 seems like a very interesting, but sadly expensive board.

Interesting video. As a side note about fast cars- sometimes you have to accelerate out of danger, then it can mean the difference between being hit or not.

Whoa! 1-game sample size … a clear champion! I was most interested in the side by side comparison of the size of the boards and pieces. Just wish the Air was 10% or 15% bigger. Thx for video!

Can all of these boards (also Chessup) do convenient post-game computer analysis? E.g. directly on the cellphone without many additional clicks or steps.

Nice video and as the Android Phones and iPhone get faster your Chessnut board is quicker. Chessnut has a new beta app, that has other AI engines. Would like to see comparison of the latest software from Chessnut.

Hmmm...... Its not fair to compare this 2 eboard's. Maybe u forgot why DGT made Centaur. Before it release they made DGT Pi for their other eboard. Centaur is for people who want to train and have fun with it. Specially for beginner. So they have opportunity to win or makes some tactic happens. So its not strange if Centaur makes back and forth, unnecessary moves or less aggressive. Its also marketed as engine that can adapt to ur level. Yes, its based on Stockfish but tweaked somehow. So is more forgiven. Also its based on older version(12 or 13, idont know). Meanwhile the Pi using the normal full power Stockfish engines. So is more capable to compete with Chessnut. The engines on Pi need manually updated. Meanwhile combination app and eboard it will normally using the latest version. Chessnut is using the normal Stockfish like other eboard that using App from phone, tablet or laptop. For example; Chessup, Millennium ebord+3rd party app. Millennium Chess Element, King Performance and their eBoard+Hiarcs IOS app are comparable with DGT Centaur. So when i as a beginner play against normal Stockfish, It will punish me big times when i make a single mistake or unnecessary moves. Thats why i 99 percent lost against Stockfish.

I owned a Centaur about 7 years ago. It is old technology now. At the time DGT did not release the details of the engine used in the Centaur but they did claim that on full strength it was capable of 3000+ elo. The processor is slow in comparison to a modern phone which will inhibit its strength and it was deliberately programmed not to always play the best moves, to be more human. I now have a full wooden DGT eBoard running Stockfish 15.1 on a modern tablet and it would do chessnut over for sure.

I think the DGT board take more time to simulate a real player... I might have read that somewhere

DGT is programmed to be more like a human. Thus it makes sense that it lost against stockfish15. Makes it more realistic, as humans would also always loose against an engine. My understanding is that DGT even at the strongest level (expert) is meant to play like a super strong GM, but weaker than a real engine, to (again) play more like a human. Which I think is great and DGT wins as a product, if people want to play against it. I havent seen anybody having fun playing against stockfish15 that will kill you every single game..:-)

If I am not mistaken, DGT was not connected to online engine, and Chessnut Air was? Then the result could be fairly predictable, and no only on speed. Slower processor in the DGT board apparently could limit the algo not only on the response time, but also on depth of analysis. If both were connected to the internet and the same algo was playing against itself, that would be another story. But do flip the sides! Thank you :)

Absolutely, I agree with you entirely! If both boards were utilizing same engine and drawing their analysis from online then essentially it would be the same or similar engine that's basically playing each other! Thank you for watching!

I agree. In fact the chessboard air is more a stupid input output device. The strength is in the computer connecting with it. In this case the smartphone.

ChessNut Air is running stockfish on the cellphone. I was able to play without being connected to the internet. There are some features like game analysis that leverage features in lichess, but the basic play vs computer is all just local functionality. So the performance of the ChessNut air might depend on the power of the hardware it is running on whereas the DGT one is probably loaded via firmware and so presumably performs more consistently.

Alright. I saw the outcome. Another problem here is that you didn't set time on the Centaur. So he"s playing a blitz game against Chessnut. Setting has to set at 90 minutes; then it's at its strongest. When I just had the Centaur it drew against my old Mephisto Milano! Ik went to DGT with my board (it is in my hometown) and the man explained how it works. This variation (3.....d4?) would SF never play. Centaur is made to play against humans and will adept to its opponent.

I have to say I’m a fan of the delayed. To me it has a more realistic feel to it and doesn’t feel rushed. Between Square pro and chessnut air which one would you recommend. For traveling

Can the chessnut also function as a standalone chess computer without the internet? Does it have an integrated chess engine or does it always have to be connected on another device?

Lately I've been having problems with my Square Off Pro and it's really frustrating 😡 if I want to capture en-pasant, the board just can't accept it. Also it will start blinking random squares on the board as though you have moved a piece (and then randomly stop blinking). It's very cold in my house so I don't know if that has something to do with it or is it the fact that I leave the pieces on the board constantly and it's a magnetic field issue. Not sure what's going on but if anyone else is having problems, please share your thoughts. I'm starting to think the Chessnut Air may be the way to go but I think the rooks are too short. Let me know 👍

I don't think it can be cold enough for magnetic fields to be affected whilst you can still live in that area.

Please please be more brief with your introductions ! It took over 7 minutes before you actually displayed the boards ready to play! I nearly pulled out what remains of my hair waiting for you to get on with it! I owned a Centaur when they first came on the market. Regardless of the level set,it adapts it’s play and even at the top level will play sub optimal moves at times. It also has a Raspberry Pi 0 as its computer which is about as low spec. as you can get; I sold the Centaur after a year. I was not at all surprised to see the Chessnut Air win . I’m not sure whether the program is contained within the board, in the Chessnut software or in the Cloud but in any case you should have let each program play white ( worth about 30 Elo points ) to make a fair comparison. An entertaining video which shows if nothing else how far these electronic chess boards have moved forward in the last couple of years.

I'm going to watch this video, but my prediction is that Chessnut wins. The Centaur has an engine based on SF. Its rating is about 3000. Even an older version of SF, say SF 12, will beat (sometimes draw) Centaur. Centaur has a completely different style of playing; more adaptive. Now, let's see if I just talked trash! 😇

I wonder why both boards decided to decline their en passant option? also what the average and max ELO for these boards and can we use any pieces? I have nice wooden pieces

For ChessNut you can pick from 10 stockfish levels and it is already performing at around 2000 on level 5. There's a big jump for level 4 to level 5. There are some third party apps like White Pawn that you can use with it that allow you to pick from 20 discrete levels of StockFish which makes it a bit easier to find your level. For example, on the standard app I can beat level 4 most games but struggle against level 5. So my level is between those two settings which I can find on other apps connected to the board.

Chessnut used your phone as its brain, DGT board is a standalone board that does all its processing with a microchip. I appreciate creating these kinds of content, but In this sense, you were comparing apples to oranges.

I have seen few videos of you already. You are clearly sponsored by chessnut but not mentioning it. Not a fair approach in any way. Sad for you! 1. You never mentioned that dgt plays with black. Of course white start with advantage, do you think on that much high level AI can be missed this detail? Fair one should be put chestnut as black as well, right? 2. Looks like you are pretending that you are not aware of the concept of dgt. Dgt centaur is designed for giving human feel approach. And I am sure the waiting is related to this concept. To give more human feel. Please be brave and say openly you are sponsored by chess nut!
