Jaguaripe is a city in the State of Bahia.
In had a population of 18 788 inhabitants.
Neighboring the municipalities of Aratuípe, Salinas da Margarida and Valença,
Jaguaripe is located 15 km south-east of Nazaré, the largest city in the vicinity.
Situated 100 m from the Ferry boat on Itaparica Island and 15 Km from the city of Aratuípe.
Jaguaripe is beautiful for the beauty of its landscape and historical value, with its mansions and buildings from the 17th century, such as the church of Nossa Senhora da Ajuda. The main façade was only finished in 1900, when the church was renovated. The Rococo-style construction and tile-covered tower take the viewer on a journey back to the time when the Jesuits inhabited the region. According to oral tradition, the house of the magistrate, today the Forum of the city, was the residence of the priests who catechized the Brazilian natives.
On the banks of the Jaguaripe River, the Paço Municipal building, a monument to the village where it all began. This old core was connected by underground tunnels, where the population hid from indigenous attacks. The Town Hall and Jail went down in history due to the morbidity of the “Salt Prison”. Situated at river level, it was often flooded by high tide and prisoners had to float to survive; many could not. Our Lady of the Rosary Church
Dating from the end of the 18th century, it has an architecture with a “T” plan, consisting of a nave, chancel and two entrance sacristies, a full-arched doorway, with a Rococo pediment.
Mother Church of Our Lady of Help
The church was built by the Jesuits on land donated at the end of the 16th century.
Its façade was built at the beginning of the year 1900, when the reconstruction works on the church, in Rococo style, ended.
City Hall and Sal Prison
One of the oldest chambers and prisons in the state of Bahia.
1697 installed the village of Jaguaripe and inaugurated the building of the Municipal Palace.
As a way of punishing the delinquents who murdered her husband, D. Úrsula made it known to the King of Portugal who, recognizing the abandonment of the villages in the Recôncavo, ordered the creation of Vila de Jaguaripe. She helped build the village's public jail, in 1697, the famous Sal Chain, building for the greatest possible security at the time. Well reinforced walls and a “sui generis” dungeon, where the special prisoner was placed in a narrow pit, which only fit his body, standing, with immobilized arms and legs, head covered on top, receiving through a tunnel that connected the bottom of the trapdoor to sea water. During high tides, the trapdoor was flooded and the water carried salt, dirt, crustaceans and other animals that hurt the prisoner and killed him little by little. Sometimes, too, he was killed by drowning, or abuse.
The fame of this prison was so widespread, that the delinquents were terrified when they heard about what became a very famous proverb “Justice of Jaguaripe that chases you”.

Casa do Ouvidor is located at the foot of Ladeira D’Ajuda, in Praça da Bandeira. It is a corner house, with no setback and a small backyard. One of Bahia's noble houses from the 17th century, also a Jesuit construction from the 17th century.

Nossa Senhora do Rosário church located in the center of Praça Mestre Pio, on a small hill.
Probably from the end of the 18th century, it has a “T” shape.
The facade of the unfinished building is typically rococo.
In the 18th century, the date of its construction is not known precisely.
